They wrote the song and put it in the film to honour the life of Cameron Duncan. Both songs have a double meaning: May It Be talks about the journey to destroy the ring and about the struggle with darkness, but is also talking about our personal trials and tribulations within our own lives. In life we are only at the beginning of our great journey. In 'Into The West' it talks about the end of our journey in this world and the continuation into the next life. Death is not the end as Gandalf says to Pippin in the Return of the King "End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it." Thanks to the writers and the magical music of Howard Shore. This captures the bittersweetness so well that we can apply the song to most of the wonderful endings in books and movies.
