My best at a line by line meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/26/09
Okay well this is my interpretation of the song, but by no means am I saying it's the only one. I'll focus mainly on the references that people didn't understand though.
"Burning down neverland scatter the ashes"-This could mean either burning down a child's youth and innocence since it was the imaginary land in Peter Pan, or it could also be a reference to Michael Jackson's ranch, since that would fit in with all the other celebrity stuff.
"White lines black ties the mansions"-White lines is referencing to cocaine since you put it in lines to snort, black ties and mansions refers to their fancy lifestyle and luxury
"Is this another death by misadventure,"-fairly self-explanatory, simply asking if this is another death because of a bad choice
"Tell me what you got, what you really got"-I like to look at this as kind of a taunt toward someone that does drugs or drinking and thinks they are better than someone that doesn't and asking them what do they REALLY have
"We’ll rest in our graves,"-This is another one that's hard to determine, but I see this as a sort of battle cry for people that don't do drugs or or compulsive sex or drinking and saying that they won't give in.
"Lexington course your veins"-I am 100% sure Lexington is a reference to Lexington Avenue in NYC, which is where Marilyn Monroe was in a famous movie, The Seven Year Itch, it is also the street where you see that famous photo of her with her skirt getting blown up in the wind. And obviously, Marilyn was a well known drug user and such.
"Sleepers can't just wake the dead"-This is the hardest line for me, but I look at it as saying that people who use drugs can't wake up people that have died from an overdose.
"When needles and lovers collapse on guilty beds"-This is an obvious reference to people that use drugs and have promiscuous sex since it becomes a bed where they do their addicted actions and thus feel guilt afterward or are afraid people will find out.
The chorus is by far my favorite line though, since it's a clear, contradicting reference to the famous Billy Joel song, and pretty much tells everyone that he was wrong, and that you don't have to live a life of bad choices to live a long, happy life, and that in fact you can live a very long and happy life any way you want.
"Burning down bridges now, scatter the ashes"-We all know that phrase, so I shouldn't need to explain.
"Godspeed to all you're after"-Godspeed is a an old saying, which has now become a sort of cliche, for telling you "good luck", yet here I look at it as if he's saying it almost mockingly toward a person that wants to pursue a life of poor choices.
"Is this a life left just to remember?"-Very clear here, he's asking them do you want you're life to mean someone and lead somewhere, or simply be a bunch of things that you remember and regret and lead to nothing in the end.
"Tell them who you were, who you really were"-Like someone already said, this is about how people change when they do drugs or bad habits.
"Kill yourself slowly over time, fashion statement suicide"-Saying how drugs and drinking will kill you slowly over your life, and that a lot of people are obsessed about fashion and how they look, and in some cases, commit suicide because they feel ugly.
"She's still asleep in a Chelsea hotel"-This is a reference to the actor Nico, who also goes by the name of Christa Päffgen, which if you recall, is the name of another Anberlin song (Dance Dance Christa Paffegen). Christa Paffgen shot one of her most famous movies at the Chelsea hotel titled "Chelsea Girls". The "asleep" refers to her death due to a heroin overdose at the, yep, you guess it, Chelsea Hotel.
"Bad turn to worse, and the worst turns into hell"-I think some people interpret this as saying that bad people go to hell (I won't even touch that subject), but in the line he's saying that bad habits after a while, will make your life bad, and then as you get more addicted, it turns your life into hell.
Well that's all I have, so like I said, you can interpret it any way you like since it's probably just as right, but like I said, I mostly wanted to focus on the references to the celebrities, since that's what the song is truly about in the band's eyes. (By the way, I love that connection about Lexington, Kentucky!)
Thanks Guys! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/20/09
I must say i love reading what people write. My friend showed me this song literally 4 days ago and I'm addicted. However, it wasn't until I read all these reviews that I understood the lyrics to the song. My friend and I are big Billy Joel fans, so we didn't like "The Lied When They Said The Good Die Young" too much. After looking at what Stephen said though, it all makes so much sense. Props to Anberlin for all its amazing music.
"Chelsea Hotel" lyric finally caught my attention | Reviewer: Missa | 2/4/09
Funny because I can't tell you how many times I've listened to this song and tried to figure out what it was about. I've never been a Sex Pistols fan, but I watched Sid and Nancy about a week ago and did some reading up on the incident just out of curiosity. I was on my way to work yesterday listening to this song and caught the words "Chelsea Hotel" and really started to pay attention. If you wiki the song tho, Stephen says the song is referring to all rock stars who's downfall was because of drugs, not just specifically Sid Vicious
the meaning of song | Reviewer: Papa Casey | 2/2/09
for you ppl who dont know the meaning of this song...and the ones who argue like a bunch of tards running a race(even if you win, your still retarded)
Singer Stephen Christian discussed the meaning of Godspeed in an interview:
It's about different stories through rock and roll history where drugs played a major downfall or death in the persona's life, such as Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Nico, Moon, Vicious, etc. It's selfish and tiring. I feel that "rock stars" start believing their own hype and begin on an egocentric journey that inevitably ends in destruction.
perception | Reviewer: the laughing man | 12/23/08
Great song, its funny listening to reviews, people give information about themselfs unconciously. Creating meaning behind songs distorts the truth yet can be fun. Asking the song writer themselfs is the only real true way to know but we are free to guess for the fun of it. I dont have a clue what the meaning of the song is.
Amazing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/18/08
i find it amazing how much meaning they squeeze into a song. I think what they mean by "they lied when they said the good die young" is that alot of people who die young is because they've taken drugs, done somthing bad, hung around with the wrong people, ect. were as some people who live long have made good and smart choices and have surrendered to God
SID AND NANCY | Reviewer: Lilian | 8/29/08
I think the song is about Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. Nancy died at the Chelsea Hotel and apparently Sid stabbed her but has no recollection of doing so whatsoever. Both of them take drugs. When Sid died, his ashes were scattered near Nancy's grave. Yep. The modern day Romeo and Juliet, Sid and Nancy.
I love them. | Reviewer: Sarah | 8/18/08
