But this song makes you really think about those who have less to give there children, maybe this year even more, with the economy so bad, & you do just wanna make it right for the children. This song should be played more often. Some Songs Actually Mean Something | Reviewer: Peter S. Beagle | 11/29/06 I was never a Merle Haggard fan until I heard this song. I was raised on classical music, Broadway musicals and Delta blues (an odd mix, I admit.) But I am a free-lance writer (novels, stories, scripts, etc.), and I have also scuffled desperately to raise children on next to nothing. And December, even now, invariably catches me broke and next door to despair, as I know it catches a whole lot of people. I've never heard any recording of that song but the Hag's - though I'm certainly glad to see that a lot of other singers have recorded it - and to this day, without fail, it makes me cry.
