you people are probably who he wrote this song about...I think it's about everything that is wrong with the world, which is a lot, and we hide behind 'imported goods' and new clothing and continue to smile and say stupid things like "everything is going to be ok" because it is obviously not! people are more concerned with material objects (or who is superior) when really we are all insignificant souls who have lost our spirituality and we should be angry about that...and whoever said this song is not intellectual is obviously not intellectual themselves.

I think it has more to do with the fact that we Americans and other people in "civilized" country's have such easy lives compared to the millions who starve to death because they can't even find food.
All so that corporations can make more profit, and continue to keep the poor....poor.

Mabye I'm wrong? regardless if what the lyrics mean to me aren't what they were intended to be, We still need to change the world.

the song has nothing to do with singapore
its just a country
whose name happens to have enough syllables to fit the line
the song to me touches on a few things:
1)materialism - does it really matter where the pillow was made? no. does it really matter what shit you have or if you drink coffee in the morning? not really does it matter that his jeans are denim and his clothes are in the closet no
thats still not what the song is about though
2) he's in a routine, a habit, a niche. he's doing the things thats expected of him but he doesnt know why. he wants something to happen. something to change. maybe to feel something meaningful
3)he's frustrated. probably with people getting hung up on meaningless shit like how singapore is in the first line of the song when there is still a whole song to look at that pretty much everyone else ignored.
im sure theres much more to it
or maybe not
maybe its all about singapore
but it doesnt really matter
if you like the song, great
if you dont, fine
but i hope you have something better to do than add comments about signapore or how "foreigners shouldn't review american music" or how "americans" have "lousy 'knowledge'of everything"
because thats very ironic.
please, shut up. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/11/08
Tom (the writer/singer of Against Me!) wasn't using Singapore as an example of something cheap, he was just using it as a general example of where things are made. It wouldn't have meant anything different had he said "Korea" or "China."
It's well known knowledge in the United States that the 'other side' of the world makes a lot of things we use, some of good quality, some not.
And besides, the song is supposed to convey the monotony of living, and having ill thoughts towards it.
this is the title | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/20/08
the word "singapore" obviously wansn't put in to make it intellectual. This song is obviously not meant to be intellectual and anyone that thinks it was a failed attempt at being so is obviously not intellectual.
where does it say cheap? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/3/08
I never heard them say the pillows were cheap, and when did Against Me say they were an intelligent music? its just a song you can say whatever you want in one, i dont think it makes it sound more intellectual at all. Let me guess where your from...FRANCE, haha i love how foreigners are so condescending and think they are smart because they werent raised in the greatest contry ever

you're right singapore. maybe americans shouldn't pity other countries. I'll sleep on my pillows made in pakistan in contentment tonight. or maybe foreigners shouldn't review american music. you probably shouldn't listen to american music singapore. you should probably play chess and not go on the internet singapore. just drink your wine and let everything decline.

does not make cheap pillows. you americans and your lousy "knowledge"of everything. even your "intelligent" music proves to be just pretentiously so, plugging an "obscure" country like singapore just to make the song sound more intellectual.
