Wrong, dql. I;m sorry, but that's wrong. I don't know precisely what or where these trials occurred that you're referring to, but I think that was just the South of France. In America, i.e. Salem, they would first go through looking for a "witch mark" on the accused's body (a scar or other area that, when probed, would not give blood. This was believed to be where the devil touched you.) Often people were throwin into a lake with a rock tied to their ankle; if they floated, they were a witch, and damned to eternal hellfire if they had protested the "fact" previously. Oh, and they'd be killed.

they were monks not priests, with the intent to identify, convict and execute those accused of witchcraft. If accused the only way to be cleared was death for a witch would be able to survive the torture in what was used. Even those who would eventually repent were execute.

Malleus Maleficarum | Reviewer: Tim Crimson | 10/1/07

I love how Davey followed the Witches Hammer with this song. The Malleus Mallifcarum (Latin translation "Witches Hammer") was written by 2 Dominican priests who believed witches existed and wrote the Malleus Mallifcarum as a way to extinguish Witches from this world, as well as find out who are witches.
Some of the methods are Drowning (reference to the song "Open my eyes as I submerge
and I won't deny what I've been since birth.
I'll die drowned by your standards." If the accused survived the drowning ceremony they would be tried for witchcraft. Once convicted and sentenced to death the accused would be executed in a number of ways: being hung, being burnt, being pressed (cruel way of getting the truth as well. When one was pressed, example Giles Corey of Salem Village, Massachusetts; 1692, they would be layed out in a field and have large stone slabs placed upon their chest until their ribs collapsed or they stopped breathing.)(Song reference: "Breathe in the life of the summmer's death as the orange
and red breathe their first breath,
so welcome as they're burning through.")
Another way of executing was burning. Song reference, "We all begin to burn.
Autumn's flame dance's in my eyes
Set alight for all we've learned.
My ashes falling.

My skin is singed but it heals my heart
and with glowing pride I'll wear my scars.
I'm honored by your hatred.
Leaves fall we arise again,
and the end impending,
it will begin.

We all begin to burn.
Autumn's flame dance's in my eyes
Set alight for all we've learned.
My ashes falling." As well as "Ashes fall and I'm rising up again. Ashes fall.
Ashes fall. Ashes fall as we all arise."
Trials were usually brought upon those accused of witchcraft because of some form of affliction upon citizens of the local town, we'll use Salem Village, Massachusetts for it was infamous for it's Witch Trials in 1692. Often in this year, 1692, people would complain of being afflicted or visited in their sleep by an apparition in their sleep. Usually when they would be afflicted they would have been pinched, choked, scratched, even stabbed (see: The Crucible for reference. [Abigail Williams was stabbed in stomach during a trial.]). In reference to the song, their afflictions can be noted as "can you feel me? GO!(x5)".
In conclusion, Davey did his homework when writing this song. Bravo. I love this song and band.
