Add Your New Review About The Song The Reviews about Early Mornin' Rain (page 1/1) ------ performed by Gordon Lightfoot Where did we go wrong | Reviewer: Ivan Simic | 7/4/2004 Today is The 4th of July, The Independence day for The US of America and although I'm writing this in my homeland in Croatia, I have to think that this day has a deep meaning for every country. When one says independence, one surely means that he is free and that he considers himself a part of that land, not only geographically, but also emotionally and in spirit. America is a big continent with such a varieties I can't even imagine, not to mention that I've never been there. But I can SENSE it, I can see mountains and plains, rivers and lakes, coasts and deserts while I listen to Gordon Lightfoot. What's even more, I can FEEL happiness, or, in this song's case, loneliness and suffering from being separated far away from the ones you love. I can SEE that plane up above and a small, aching man down there, I can HEAR the engins roar, but I can also HEAR his sincere words that touch me, because i can IDENTIFY with that man's problems like every other man. I can SYMPHATIZE with him, without even knowing the reasons why he's left with only 1$ in his pocket, weather he spent it on women like he says or maybe not - it's not fair if he did, but it's also human to understand. And all that I can do not only on the account of the words, but very much due to an intimate sound of the music score itself. There's that melancholy mood floating all the way as the chords progress repeats over and over towards the end, and there's that soft spoken, warm voice of a man who undoubtedly knows the subject from his own experience, I guess. After listening to such songs something stays within you, not only you can hum the music, but you have an experience, one moment in life to learn about or to compare it with some of the moments you've already been through in your own life. Then you pull out the record with '707' on the cover rising above the yellow prairie, turn it on and you feel a rich man inside yourself. Where did we go wrong - says in the title above, well, where did we? All I was saying about this song has got very little to do with commercialism, making covers from other authors' lyrics and compositions, not even playing the real instruments, but inserting discs of sampled sounds and rhythms. Today so many musicians (it would be better to call them 'stars' ) aren't even sufficient enough to sing the songs without playback, they usually don't play any instrument at all, and to think of writing the material themselves (both words and music!), I mean, come on! Furthermore, the lyrics are mostly stupid and the music mainly consists of the repeating rhythmic pattern which I call 'The Noise'. I can't recognize one song from another and I'm certainly not trying to analize the words, so I have to ask myself where have all the songwriters gone? We can download every song that's published in the world (I always rather listen to my old vynil LPs!), but we don't have to say nothing important to each other in those songs any more! Here I'm listening Gordon Lightfoot in Croatia and I feel like i've BEEN THERE, like I''ve been in America, at least in the state of mind! He's singing about a simple, ordinary man and the facts of pure life. It's no wonder at all why I could found so many of Gordon's lyrics here and why there exists so many covers of this song! Of course I'm not talking about all musical genres, but I am talking about the material often seen on today's TV and radio programmes by which young generations form thier opinion and experience in a very narrow way and it's obvious they don't know how to express themselves in any deeper way. Nevertheless, I hope I explained You why I decided to write a review about this song in particular. I hope you share some, if not all of my points of view, and that this will initiate some discussion and observations from other surfers.
