Review The Song (17)
What was it like to see,
The face of your own stability,
Suddenly look away,
Leaving you with the dead and hopeless?
Eleven and she was gone.
Eleven is when we waved good-bye.
Eleven is standing still,
Waiting for me to free him,
By coming home.
Moving me with a sound.
Opening me within a gesture.
Drawing me down and in,
Showing me where it all began,
You're too scar'd to realize this,
You are the voice that's been calling me back home.
sponsored linksUnder a dead Ohio sky,
Eleven has been and will be waiting,
Defending his light and wondering,
Where the hell have I been?
Sleeping lost and numb I.
So glad that I have found you.
I am but wide awake and heading,
I wish that I could see you,
Turn and run to play.
Dreams are fading,
Carry my ancient soul.
Carry me into the light.
Aim your body heavenly,
Enduring a memory.
I’ll come to your light,
Hold your light.
Hold your light where I can see it,
Hold your light,
Eleven, Lead me through each gentle step,
By inch by loaded memory,
As soon as pain allows so we can,
And both move on together.
Eleven lead me through each gentle step,
By inch by loaded memory 'till,
And one are one,
I'm heading back home...

Damn, so ignorant comments | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/28/14
this song is about maynard, about the desease of his mother, he was eleven and he had to say goodbye to her, cause she was unable to take care of him, paralized. eleven is the age of maynard when all that happen.
Eleventh hour | Reviewer: Angela Dawn Davis | 1/3/14
It's sounds like twin flames reuniting for the eleventh hour final ascension together. Some say normally at least one of the two twin flames are lightworkers, or christed. Eleven is also symbolic of the high priestess(Magdala), seated at the entrance of Solomon's temple. She holds the Torah, the way. People like many saints,prophets,psychics,spiritul teachers have an 11 life path in numerology. It is considered a powerful number.My favorite number
11 | Reviewer: pete | 12/8/13
this is about jimmy carter. jimmy is ADAM(Lucifer's son). Prophecy says that Adam will help Hold the LIGHT to the new age. TOTAL SATANIC poetry.
Also, OHIO is witchcraft central.
11 letters in Jimmy Carter.
I know this sounds crazy, but the words in this song are STRAIGHT from witchcraft teachings.
Music is a spell, and every rock star knows it
parents | Reviewer: ahlmann | 8/13/13
to me this song is about parents, 1+1=11, the joining of the two in procreation, and the child that is left behind with a broken heart when the father goes off to work and when the mother drops the child off at daycare or the first day of school, or when parents seperate, when the child is still in it's most important developmental stage, scarring the soul, and only when the child grows up and has the realization and knowledge to go through these pains and heal these early wounds can it reunite it's parents in it's heart and heal those wounds. The feeling of coming back home so to speak will make the child glow with love, and be able to move on as a whole person.
could be some general meaning in this, but that's my personal take on it, I find it sublime poetry.
Childhood trauma | Reviewer: J | 7/18/13
Psychoanalysis is a huge theme of Aenima.
I'd say that the biographical interpretations are close. This Ohio thing must be a clue for that
This song is about childhood trauma. Due to something traumatic by the age of eleven, the "I" of the song haven't been able to grow up naturally. Instead, the eleven year old has been cut of from the self, and is left alone in the memory. The "I" is attempting to re-unite with his eleven year old self so they can heal together and become a whole person.
Makes me think of Michael Jackson.
Psychoanalytical themes seems overall to be a huge theme of Aenima. See Stinkfist, H, Forty six & 2, Pushit.
split soul fragment | Reviewer: Anon | 12/27/12
The trauma of his mother's cerebral aneurysm caused Maynard's soul to split. "Eleven is standing still, waiting for me to free him" means that that part of his consciousness (him as an 11 year old) is stuck in the past waiting for him to heal his psyche so he can recover the lost soul fragment.
When you go through truma you lose memory of it because your consciousness at that moment splits off. Mind programming is based on this idea.The person is traumatized hundreds of times so their soul splits off so many times that the person's soul has a huge gap in it and very little spiritual light left to defend themselves from discarnate spirits. Therefore they can easily be possesed without even having the slightest idea. That's why hollywood actors have so many alter personas.The roles they play are actually manifestations of specific demons who possess them.
"Eleven has been and will be waiting,/Defending his light" means that Maynard is using the spiritual light that the fragment took when it split off as a guide to help him find the fragment.

The "11" probably refers to when Maynard's mother had a cerebral anuerysm. Then, maybe, since its a sequel to "Prison Sex", he talks about dealing with the affects. And as far as heading home, that could be pointing to when he moved to Michigan with his father after this had happened.

In fact, some people believe that when they notice the number pattern 1111 or the digits 11:11 on digital time pieces, time/temperature signs, and so on, that there is an underlying reason besides mere chance or coincidence. A belief of this nature is related to the idea of synchronicity.
My take | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/14/11
Starting from the top of the lyrics- the Title: jimmy. Lower case j. little jimmy. maynards real name is James aka Jimmy. this is a story about Maynard when he was 11 years old.
The first verse and half of the 2nd verse begs for you to understand the mind of an 11 year old child losing his mother who fell ill or coma or whatever it was.
The coming home part refers to reconnecting with the part of him, the real him, that was frozen in time at 11. He is unable to fully be himself.
Too scar'd to realize the voice calling him back home may be referring to a part of him was trying to reconnect the conscienceness but he was blinded by the pain of what happened.
Gestures, sounds, drawing back in all might refer to things in life that draw him back to the pain of the event at 11. Reminds that reaffirm the suppresion of the real self.
Maynard lived in Ohio when he was young. Look it up.
The rest is about the light and returning to reunite the to the 11 year old self so they can become 1 again. I guess he has moved past the pain enough to see the light, or what needs to be done to get back to the self being hole again.
Its a slow, step by step process.
Now realize that for every song's situational story, there is a deeper meaning(s) hidden within.
Look into the ego and the false center and you will be in a step in the right direction on seeing new meanings in Tool songs.

1 + 1 = 11 | Reviewer: HuRa | 10/12/11
a) 1 + 1 = 2
b) 1 + 1 = 11
d) More ...
Based on the review of the concert on 11-11-96, the song deals with abuse.
I think the song deals with ::
* Jimmy's (aka Maynard's) experiences at Eleven,
* e) 1 + 1 = 3 [think vesica piscis],
* ELEVENth degree sex magick
* The ELEVENth sephira Da'ath
* f) 1 + 1 = 1

to harmonize a soul | Reviewer: Peter | 8/27/11
In my opinion, the song is about Maynard's childhood, particulary about the moment when he was 11 and his mother became disable. It seems that the lyrics are like Maynard talking to the young himself and viceversa, trying to reunite his broken and splitted soul in one, no more duality (11) but unity (1), since something in his soul (or his psyche if you prefer) broke and went away and kinda stop growing in harmony with the rest of himself when he was forced to face such a hard situation for a child. The ending seems to be quite optimistic, as if a new era is finally next to begin. The whole concept is supported by the symbology of numer 11, as somebody has already noticed here.

Never mind the last one, it could be him talking about the mind and the body, like in third eye. Eleven symbolizes duality, he also sang about this in Third Eye, and somewhat in H, depending on your interpretation.
'Eleven bring the gift of spiritual inheritance, is gifted as the "Light-Bearer". It is the number of the Light within all. Strengthened by the love of Peace, gentleness, sensitivity and insight. Greatest facility is the awareness of Universal relationship. Is related to the energy of Oppositions and the Balancing needed in order to achieve synthesis. Eleven is The PeaceMaker... Colours : Gold, Salmon, Prune, White and Black.'

I don't really have an entire interpretation for the song, but tool is a very spiritual band, you can google the symbolism for the number eleven, one of the things said is that eleven should not be taken as one number, but two (spiritual meaning, not math!) I think it could POSSIBLY have something to do with his son, but he does say 'she'. Though in the end when you break it down we're all humans.
Oneness | Reviewer: Mycological | 7/8/11
when one and one are one- eleven. ever catch the clock at 11:11 it's the universal time of oneness.
"reunite and both move on together." Tool is big on this kind of thing from what i've noticed. that and going "home"
