Bob Dylan When The Ship Comes In Lyrics

Last updated: 09/24/2013 06:27:48 AM

as actually sung on the LP cut:

Oh the time will come up
When the winds will stop
And the breeze will cease to be breathin’
Like the stillness in the wind
Before the hurricane begin
The hour that the ship comes in

And the sea will split
And the ships will hit
And the sands on the shoreline will be shaking
And the tide will sound
And the waves will pound
And the morning will be a-breaking

The fishes will laugh
As they swim out of the path
And the seagulls they’ll be smiling
And the rocks on the sand
Will proudly stand
The hour that the ship comes in

And the words that are used
For to get the ship confused
Will not be understood as they’re spoken
For the chains of the sea
Will have busted in the night
And be buried on the bottom of the ocean

A song will lift
As the mainsail shifts
And the boat drifts onto the shoreline
And the sun will respect
Every face on the deck
The hour that the ship comes in

And the sands will roll
Out a carpet of gold
For your wearied toes to be a-touchin’
And the ship’s wise men
Will remind you once again
That the whole wide world is watchin’

Oh the foes will rise
With the sleep still in their eyes
And they’ll jerk from their beds and think they’re dreamin’
But they’ll pinch themselves and squeal
And they'll know that it’s for real
The hour that the ship comes in

Then they’ll raise their hands
Sayin’ We’ll meet all your demands
But we’ll shout from the bow Your days are numbered
And like Pharoah’s tribe
They’ll be drownded in the tide
And like Goliath, they’ll be conquered.

When The Ship Comes In. | Reviewer: Glory Cloud Revelation | 6/4/13

This is a beautiful song. I could hear the sound of "Victory!" in it. It is sung with strength and conviction accompanied with just the right rhythm and music. Thank you, Bob Dylan for another master piece. Glory Cloud Revelation especially enjoys looking for, and finding spiritual revelations based on God's word. Therefore, in studying these lyrics "When the winds will stop, and the breeze will cease to be breathin' Like the stillness of the wind, Fore the hurricane begins" may be based on the scripture, "While people are saying, 'Peace and Safety', then shall come sudden destruction!" I Thessalonians 5:3 In "The hour that the ship comes in" notice he does not mention a specific hour. Neither did Jesus give a specific hour of when He's coming, but said "No man knows the day or hour, of the coming of the Lord, only my Father in heaven." Matthew 24:36 "The sea will split and the ship will hit...The sand will be shaking" may imply the testing of the foundation as told by Jesus in Luke 6:46-49 "The man who hears my word, and doesn't do it will be like a man building a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed, and it's destruction was complete."*NIV "...As the morning is breaking" signifies light, and "light" in the bible symbolizes the truth of His Word. Therefore, "the morning breaking" may imply prophecy being fulfilled in the action of the Living Word of God. The word "breaking" is also used in the Bible to describe the action of the Word of God. "Is not My word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rocks in pieces." In a way, these verses seem to give the feeling that the ship that is coming in is symbolic of the Day of the Lord, when He releases His power to separate the good and bad. (The only safe place in the Day of the Lord is being under the atonement blood of Heaven's Lamb of God as spoken in the book of Revelation, and through many other scriptures in the Holy Bible. No matter how modern, modern man may be, God is not impressed - "His word is forever settled in Heaven." Psalm 119:89..."They over came him by the Blood of the Lamb, and the word of their testimony" Revelation 12:11) Then, to bring a little lightness to this, which takes place when people are relieved that the battle is won or heading that way, I like the following verses...."Oh, the fishes will laugh, as they swim out of the path, And the sea gulls, they'll be smiling" The bible says, "All creation groans for the coming of the Lord" Romans 8:18-22 "And the rocks on the sand, will proudly stand, the hour that the ship comes in". The rocks may be symbolic of the Words of God, according to Luke Chapter 6, verses 46-48 "The man who hears My word, and does it, is likened to a man who building a house who dug down deep, and laid the foundation on a rock. Then, when the flood came, it could not shake it....because it was built well. "And the words that are used, for to get the ship confused, will not be understood as they're spoken" may be based on the scripture "No weapon formed against you will prosper, every tongue that rises up against you in judgment, thou shall condemn, for this is the heritage of the servants of the Lord. ..and their righteousness is of Me, saith the Lord." Isaiah 54:17 "For the chains of the sea will have busted in the night, and be buried in the bottom of the ocean"...these chains represent oppression from the enemy, that will be cast into the sea.Oppression comes in when we sin too much consistently in a certain area ( or areas). When that happens, only the power of the Holy Spirit could deliver a person. And He will, if a person is willing to turn away from the sins that brought it on. "All those who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Acts 2:21 And the Lord casts those sins into the depths of the sea of forgetfulness, to remember the no more."A song will lift " so it makes you want to sing! Sing! Sing! Sing! Praises to the King of kings...The hour that the ship comes in.

Baez' theory | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/15/09

According to Joan Baez in the film 'No Direction Home', this song may have been inspired by an incident in which a hotel refused to give them a room. Dylan got mad, then when they got a room, wrote this moving, brilliant song of retribution. I find this prospect hilarious.
