Beach Boys When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) Lyrics

Last updated: 11/07/2010 10:00:00 AM

When I grow up to be a man
Will I dig the same things that turn me on as a kid?
Will I look back and say that I wish I hadn't done what I did?
Will I joke around and still dig those sounds
When I grow up to be a man?

Will I look for the same things in a woman that I dig in a girl?
(fourteen fifteen)
Will I settle down fast or will I first wanna travel the world?
(sixteen seventeen)
Now I'm young and free, but how will it be
When I grow up to be a man?

Oooooo Ooooooo Oooooooo
Will my kids be proud or think their old man is really a square?
(eighteen nineteen)
When they're out having fun yeah, will I still wanna have my share?
(twenty twenty-one)
Will I love my wife for the rest of my life
When I grow up to be a man?

What will I be when I grow up to be a man?
(twenty-two twenty-three)
Won't last forever
(twenty-four twenty-five)
It's kind of sad
(twenty-six twenty-seven)
Won't last forever
(twenty-eight twenty-nine)
It's kind of sad
(thirty thirty-one)
Won't last forever
(thirty-two . . .)

God...this song epitomizes what was great about Wilson and the Beach Boys.
It was so simple then and wall to wall good times and tunes. To hear them goofing around in song intros in their studio with their dad. Pure simplicity and so very complex. Google top 100 songs 1964. Boys and girls we have lived charmed lives. How the hell did we get so lucky?

18, 19 = great times ; old now = Sucks. | Reviewer: Old now | 2/27/10

Sure makes me want to be in my '69 camero rolling down the highway state by state by state again. None of us who are old now had any idea how great those days were and how bad these were going to be. Many people say they would not want to be young again. I say, bring on the nano bot technology that will reverse my age and make me young again. I'll sign up for 'super soldier' duty without blinking an eye.

Makes me cry... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/29/09

Miss all those days when life was easy, like the Beach Boys songs... except the words, like these, so often made me think... And now, this great Beach Boys song is the theme to a new TV show - "Men of a Certain Age" - that also recalls all those teenaged days but also makes me think... "Won't last forever..." but we always thought those days would never end.

These are powerful and poigniant lyrics. I suspect many people simply listen to the melody and write the song off as another cheery or light weight Beach Boys pop tune. "In My Room" is another deceptive example.

Won't Last Forever...It's Kind of Sad | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/28/07

This is quintessential Beach Boys, and I just love it. First, it's got an interesting topic for a pop song. It expresses all the idealism of youth with a dose of irony that makes it sophisticated as well as innocent. And second, the harmonic progressions, vocal arrangement and instrumentation are beautiful and inventive. Another day at the beach, another jewel from Brian Wilson.
