Very Ape Lyrics - Nirvana

Review The Song (24)

I am buried up to my neck in
Contradictionary flies
I take pride as the king of illiterature
I'm very ape and very nice

If you ever need anything please don't
Hesitate to ask someone else first
I'm too busy acting like I'm not naive
I've seen it all, I was here first

Out of the ground
Into the sky
Out of the sky
Into the dirt

If you ever need anything please don't
Hesitate to ask someone else first
I'm too busy acting like I'm not naive
I've seen it all, I was here first

the beauty of nirvana | Reviewer: Mario | 4/30/13

The best part of Kurt's lyrical writing is the fact that you can apply it to whatever you're currently going through in life or what your worldview is. Its rare to see lyrics that dont draw out a clear picture of what the song is about. That is why Nirvana goes down as my all time favorite band. You will never know what Kurt was writing about or going through specifically.

It's about religion | Reviewer: Joao | 2/19/13

In my opinion it's about religion:

"I am buried up to my neck in
Contradictionary flies
I take pride as the king of illiterature
I'm very ape and very nice"

That describes a religious person, they explain everything with religion and are proud to, so they're proud being the king of illiterature and in that sense are "very ape".

"If you ever need anything please don't
Hesitate to ask someone else first
I'm too busy acting like I'm not naive
I've seen it all, I was here first"

They're too buried in their religious thing, so they think they're intellectually superior to you and have the explanation for everything.

"Out of the ground
Into the sky"

Describing the belief of God,

"Out of the sky
Into the dirt"

And that belief goes to the "dirt", people who don't think much.

Odd noise | Reviewer: Tobias | 1/23/13

The lyrical meaning is puzzling indeed, But thats a given. I think the real question we should ask is, what is the very odd noise kurt makes near the end of the demo? He just goes "dadada duuuuuuhhh" like three times. you can almost tell it's a cutaway and not at the same time as the original recording, im just curious if there was any significance to this or if anybody had any guess.

Meaning | Reviewer: Marko | 1/18/13

The song is an attack on big stupid macho men, kinda like In Bloom. 'Ive seen it all i was here first' is a reference to how they act like cave men who were here before more intelligent people came to be. 'Im very ape and very nice' refers to how they think they are 'all that' because of their cave-man-like behaviour.

Jesus Lizard tribute | Reviewer: Ed | 3/30/12

The whole "out of the ground, into the sky... out of the sky into the dirt" thing is from the song "Rodeo in Joliet" off the album "Goat" by The Jesus Lizard.
The original lyric is something like "Here the sky and the ground, here the sky and the dirt..." but the way it is sung on the record could easily be mistaken for "out of the sky, out of the ground..".
Steve Albini produced the first four Jesus Lizard albums, including Goat; he also produced Nirvana's In Utero, which came out three years after Goat.

Simple | Reviewer: jd343dj | 1/28/11

I love to read posts that people put to Nirvana for one reason. No one has a clue. And it's supposed to be that way. Kurt Cobain was in fact a complex individual. He fooled everyone on the outside from what he actually thought. Every one of his songs has a meaning or marks an event, but the only person who really knows is him, and he won't be letting you in on his secret any time soon. You have to instead just admire the complexity of the songs, and the rasp in his voice

its personal | Reviewer: duff | 1/25/11

kurt was the definition of the 90s man/boy. sensitive yet opinionated. unwilling to be macho yet desiring respect. thats what this song is about. the lyrics are all in the first person a mark of kurts more personal songs like dumb and pennyroyal tea.

im buried up to my neck -make the gesture as you say "ive had it up to here" thats what this is a referance to. hes frustrated

contradictionary flies- a fly captures your attention and annoys the snot out of you but in reality is an insigificant and small thing.

i take pride as a king of iliterature - this is a referance to the way he uses metaphor in many of his songs and the fact that he just made up a word in his previous lyric.

im very ape- a monkey can do alot of the things a man can do,just not as well. its a referance to kurts status as the popular outcast. a famous rock star who wants nothing to do with groupies and guitar solos.

if you ever need anything please dont hesitate - this is about his desire to be liked and considered a nice person yet not actually liking the people hes being nice to.
im too busy acting like im not naive - he had a cynical aspect which contradicted his genuine nature.
i seen it all i was here first - is a referance to his prejudice towards teh recording industry

out of the sky etc is a commentary on the recording of the song itself. it was a struggle to write and would come in great spurts as if out of the sky and then go nowhere for a while. originally called catchy new wave tune it was one his more difficult songs to write. the music was written first and evolved dramatically over an extended period of time in the recording process

He is talking about rap music. "very ape"??? hello? It is his way of politly not sayin, nigga. what do you kids? think he was born on the ice cream side of the street? The word contra means "against", in medical terminology. contradictionary= against the Grey's anatomy. He was big on BIO-200, The sky=ground talk is just about how the black comunnity is torn between Jesus and Islahm. people look up to god but bow to ali.

Song Has a Clear Meaning | Reviewer: CobainGeneration | 10/9/10

Many Nirvana songs simply make little sense or have multiple subjects "sung about" in one song. However, "Very Ape" has a clear meaning. Essentially, it is Kurt's sarcastic attack on stupidity and closed-mindedness.

Buried up to my neck in contradictionary flies = Hypocritcal lies.

Take pride as the king of illiterature = self-explanatory. Some men think it's macho to reject education.

If you ever need anything.... ask some else = A very "Christian" attitude displayed by so many "Christians" in America.

Too busy acting like I'm not naive = self-explanatory....... Picture "Peggy Hill" (from the cartoon, King of the Hill), I think that is the characteristic he is attacking. Some people would rather make up a BS answer than admit they don't have an answer.

I've seen it all, I was here first = self-explanatory. "I was here first" is a popular refrain among many people in this country that themselves are only a generation or two removed from immigration.

Out of the Ground.... into the sky..... into the dirt = Clearly a sarcastic summary of the Judeo-Christian-Muslim religious beliefs. Kurt seemed to mock religion (ie... "god is gay", "Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam", "Sunbeams are man-made like me".) He is doing this with this chorus.

Great tune. Don't forget to detune that 6th string to a "D"!!!

Who's funny? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/23/10

Hey Alkaloidal Xtract,

You're point about this world being hollow and thus the meaningless of some of Kurt's lyrics couldn't be more spot on. However, before getting on your high horse, why not learn English first, 'analyzation' - wtf, you mean analysis right?!

You guys are funny. | Reviewer: Alkaloidal Xtract | 1/7/10

You're analyzation of these lyrics will do no more than to ruin the music for you. All that matters is that this is what it is. What it means is nothing. Think about it hard enough. Think real hard. This entire physical world is an illusion and kurt knew it. His lyrics don't have to mean anything because everything here is = exactly NOTHING. Matter is made up of atoms which are mostly empty space, and what isn't empty space inside those atoms when magnified turns out to be tiny bits of energy and MORE EMPTY SPACE. and it keeps going like that. Kurt like me felt within his inner consciousness that this reality was hollow and made amazing leaps in breaking down the barriers between physical reality and our own minds. By analyzing and trying to put his lyrics into little boxes you are destroying his life work in the sense that you are building those barriers between mind and physical reality. how about you try to enjoy something without analyzing the F*** out of it for once, Eh?

Primal Kurt | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/14/09

I loved him too but the idiot should not have let his newly born child alone with Courtney Love, the model mother. Anyways I think this song is about our own primal stupidity. The out of the ground into the sky part represents man evolving throughout time while still carrying many primal instincts.

ape you all!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/24/09

well as i see it, the lyrics talks about self loathing and self disgust inverted inside-out to spit on others the hurt felt inside..anger turned outwards because of the hate dwelling deep inside the black soul..why must i hate muyself when everybody hates me already!!! peace..
