Keith Green To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice Lyrics

Last updated: 06/15/2011 11:00:00 AM

To obey is better than sacrifice
I don't need your money
I want your life
And I hear you say that I'm coming back soon
But you act like I'll never return

Well you speak of grace and my love so sweet
How you thrive on milk, but reject My meat
And I can't help weeping of how it will be
If you keep on ignoring My words
Well you pray to prosper and succeed
But your flesh is something I just can't feed

To obey is better than sacrifice
I want more than Sunday and Wednesday nights
Cause if you can't come to Me every day
Then don't bother coming at all
La,la,la etc.

To obey is better than sacrifice
I want hearts of fire
Not your prayers of ice
And I'm coming quickly
To give back to you
According to what you have done
According to what you have done
According to what you have done

To Obey is Better than Sacrifice | Reviewer: Sam | 6/15/11

Yes, we are saved by faith and grace alone. No amount of work can save us from sin. Still through out the New Testaments Jesus and Apostles speak of rewards or punishment according to what we have done. Here are few verses that quote "according to what you have done". There are many other references like the parable of the talents and James as the other commented. Also, the song is actually about the heart and not about works. Obedience is an act of love that God very much desires. He is singing about renewal of the heart so that our life will be that of obedience rather than keeping rules and going through the motions. God wants more than Wednesday night and Sunday services. He wants your life to reflect who He is. That is true WORSHIP.

Faith Accompanied By Action | Reviewer: K. Crafton | 2/4/09

my interpretation of the song is somewhat different. When his lyrics speak of "according to what you have done," I believe he is speaking along the lines of scripture (in the book of James in the Bible) where it says in James 2:17: "In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action is dead." I don't think anyone wants to have a dead faith! And part of being obedient to God requires us to obey his will for our lives and to do the things which God would have us to do...not just the things that we feel comfortable doing. This is where obedience comes into play. Still, nothing that WE could ever attempt to do means anything unless Christ Jesus is working through us to accomplish God's purposes.

What Have We Done? | Reviewer: JN SoCal | 1/23/08

'According to what we have done..'
Jesus came so that we might have life, not 'do' life. Once a person is 'in Christ' the 'doing' is all done. We are judged as to our belief and faith, Abraham believed and he was counted as righteous. If ones belief is genuine the fruit of their life will demonstrate it. God loves you all!

historically significant Jesus movement song | Reviewer: D Nash | 9/15/07

This song woke up the Jesus Generation from peace love and greasy grace to taking a serious look at discipleship. It was a counter-move on the pendulum between law and liberality. The main thing is to realize that we are not judged according to what we have done, but what Jesus has done. Our responsibility is to come to Christ, and have his blood saccrifice cover our sins. Then we are IN Christ and it is all about what HE has done! Praise the Lord!
