Give me strength to face the truth
The doubt within my soul
No longer I can justify
The bloodshed in his name
Is it a sin to seek the truth, the truth beneath the rose?
Pray with me so I will find the gate to Heaven's door
I believed it would justify the means
It had a hold over me
Blinded to see
The cruelty of the beast
Here is the darkest side of me
(Forgive me my sins)
The veil of my dreams
Deceived all I have seen
Forgive me for what I have been
(Forgive me my sins)
Pray for me 'cause I have lost my faith in holy wars
Is paradise denied to me 'cause I can't take no more?
Has darkness taken over me
Consumed my mortal soul?
All my virtues sacrificed
Can Heaven be so cruel?
I believed it would justify the means
It had a hold over me
(Forgive me my sins)
Blinded to see
The cruelty of the beast
Here is the darkest side of me
(Forgive me my sins)
The veil of my dreams
Deceived all I have seen
Forgive me for what I have been
(Forgive me my sins)
I'm hoping, I'm praying
I won't get lost between two worlds
For all I've seen,
The truth lies in between
Give me the strength to face the wrong that I have done
Now that I know
The darkest side of me
How can blood be your salvation
And justify the pain
That we have caused throughout the times
Will I learn what's truly sacred
Will I redeem my soul
Will truth set me free
(Forgive me my sins)
Blinded to see
The cruelty of the beast
Here is the darkest side of me
(Forgive me my sins)
The veil of my dreams
Deceived all I have seen
Forgive me for what I have been
(Forgive me my sins)

Its about JW | Reviewer: YO | 9/3/09
Could be about Jehova's Witnesses. Someone who was disfellowed for accepting a blood transfusion and is talking about the real truth that she founds beneath the "love" that the organization offers.
No longer i can justify the bloodshed in his name
How can blood be our salvation and justify the pain

I read somewhere that this song was inspired in "The Da Vinci Code" (I think it was Wikipedia), and if you notice, several meanings of the story are implied in the lyrics. Furthermore, I also agree with relating this song to the Crusades. So, well, it is still a masterpiece.
Well, it doesn't mean the novel itself is real, Dan Brown writes what is bombastic! He likes to sell, that's why he writes all these conspiracies. WT might have inspired in the book to write, just like they have inspired in Braveheart so many times.
is this a song sequal? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/21/09
i dont know when these two songs were relesed but, i saw a simalarity to their song "The Promise" where the charater in the song implies murdering the people who were responcible for the death of her signifigant other, is this song supposed to be saying that it was a bad idea, more killing wont stop the killing, and so on?
(by the way, not expecting anyone to know... just a thought... but if by some amazing chance, you know the people who wrote the song, please tell me!)

Sidenote: "He who walks behind the rose" in the "Children of the Corn" series was the devil. I am not saying or implying that WT is Satanistic in ANY way, shape, or form. This just influenced my impression of the song in that, since it's a ballad, perhaps the characters were influenced by "a false prophet" or a leader who only wanted power, destruction, etc etc.
I would love to know what the Latin at the end means. Highschool courses are insuffiecient xD

I think, though the lyrics can be related to the Crusades, that they can also be a reflection of the wars today. because many argue that the war in Iraq is just a contiuation of the old holy wars. even it would seem more out of greed then religion. But I can see the relation built between the lyrics and the Crusades for the simple fact that the reason the Crusades happened was to bring some sort of ease to the Great Schism between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. Because at the time the Catholic Church needed the assistince to diffeat the "infidial" that was invading their lands. Sadly though it didn't work to the extent they had wished for and only caused death and disease to become rampit. but this song is truely amazing, even I, as a christian, think they are amazing and truthful. A Christian Who Actually Loves This Song.... | Reviewer: Michael | 5/10/09
I've seen a lot of Christians bashing this song as "anti-religious" because of its criticism of the Church; however, as a Christian seminary student, I actually find a lot that I can agree with in these lyrics and I would love to introduce my church to this song (and "Our Solemn Hour") at some point in the future.
From a Christian vantage point, I see the song as painting a contrast between real faith ("the truth beneath the rose") and blind faith in an institution that is ultimately opposed to message of Christ ("no longer can I justify the bloodshed in His name"). Oftentimes, institutionalized religion is the greatest obstacle to truly knowing God, and throughout history the Church has often been (ab)used as a vehicle for personal gain - even at the expense of the very people whom Christ loves.
It would probably shock many people to learn that the message of Jesus is one of the most anti-religious messages in human history. The idea that Jesus is "God among us" (ALL of us) means that we no longer have to seek God through the channels of established religion, because now God is out on the street romping around with the common folk. It is this message that ultimately scandalized the religious leaders of Jesus' day and led them to crucify him (a theme that I find well reflected in another symphonic metal song, Epica's "Feint").
In the song, Sharon takes the role of a person living during the time of the Crusades (or perhaps the War of the Roses, as some have suggested). She once believed that the ends of her religious community's actions would justify the means, but now she has begun to seek out the truth for herself and doubt is beginning to creep into her heart. The lyrics constrast her desire to continue believing the lie that the ends will justify the means with her desire to strike out and discover God's truth for herself. It's a beautiful theme that many of us - both in the religious community and outside of it - have struggled with. As a seminary student and candidate for pastoral ministry, I have certainly found myself in Sharon's shoes from time to time, as I look around at the petty politics and bland self-interest of the church and wonder "where is God in all of this?" In short, this is a song that has really touched me and I suspect that many Christians - if they are willing to be honest with themselves - will find echoes of their own experience in Sharon's lyrics. Excellent work, Within Temptation!
question..( and WT forever <3) | Reviewer: WTandTsubasafan | 12/30/08

Amazing... | Reviewer: Philonecron | 12/26/08
Sharon's voice gives me chills. Simply beautiful.
I agree, the song is definitely about the crusades and the harm that they cause.
"This song is contrasting heaven (holy) and the darkness (evil) and how people can be so overconsumed by the notion of going to heaven and serving, such that it blinds them from the actual thing itself."
Beautiful way to phrase that, Anon.

I share the same opion as the comments 1-6 (about crusades and wrong doing of the church). now the retard who came out of no where to defend the catholic church is just completely random... The song is talking about a period of time not today's date, back then it is a fact the catholic church was the number 1 religion full of shit, that's why it lost most of its power now-a-days (still powerful though). Everyone knows what the crusades were and what the crusaders done, and it is true as well, those who fought in it were convinced they were doing in honor of God, when it was just mercifulness bloodsehd in the end.
