The River Lyrics - Bruce Springsteen

Review The Song (5)

I come from down in the valley
where mister when you're young
They bring you up to do like your daddy done
Me and Mary we met in high school
when she was just seventeen
We'd ride out of this valley down to where the fields were green

We'd go down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh down to the river we'd ride

Then I got Mary pregnant
and man that was all she wrote
And for my nineteenth birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat
We went down to the courthouse
and the judge put it all to rest
No wedding day smiles no walk down the aisle
No flowers no wedding dress

That night we went down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh down to the river we did ride

I got a job working construction for the Johnstown Company
But lately there ain't been much work on account of the economy
Now all them things that seemed so important
Well mister they vanished right into the air
Now I just act like I don't remember
Mary acts like she don't care

But I remember us riding in my brother's car
Her body tan and wet down at the reservoir
At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take
Now those memories come back to haunt me
they haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse
that sends me down to the river
though I know the river is dry
That sends me down to the river tonight
Down to the river
my baby and I
Oh down to the river we ride

bruce's songs ( especially this one ) possess some strange power to take you where he wants, and make you experience what he wants..and no matter how many times you hear it, over and over again, every time you can feel something special.. and there are no words to describe that feeling..

This is one of the most touching songs I have ever heard..its honesty opens up all the problems that can overwhelm everything we ever loved, wanted or dreamed of. It sings about a life not lived, a dream not come true, even it started off as a great love. One has to imagine some US outback, a small town "where mister when you're young" where there are no many opportunities..then you find Mary but your troubles are not just not over, but they have just begun. No one would like to live of a memory..everybody deserves a chance in life and love, and not to think that dream is a lie. Live now, not in the past...that is the key. God bless your songs, Bruce.

Not until I listened to this song
I won't realize what a magic instrument the harmonica is
And I always love BS's honesty expressed in his lyrics

"Now those memories come back to haunt me
they haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse"

It's one of the greatest song I've ever heard
Besides I've got nothing to say

Maybe one gets the message only at the third listen - we all make a big mistake in our life and suffer forever .... think about this if somebody asks You for forgivness .....

Profound lyrics. Good reminder of how we can make a good thing go wrong if we let our impatience get in the way--lust is not a bad thing in the right context, but it needs to wait until after the wedding smile, the protection of one who will be with you forever.
