Walked away, heard them say
"Poison hearts will never change,"
walk away again.
Turned away in disgrace,
felt the chill upon my face cooling from within.
Hard to notice gleaming from the sky,
when you're staring at the cracks.
Hard to notice what is passing by with eyes lowered.
You... walked away, heard them say
"Poison hearts will never change,"
walk away again.
All the cracks, they lead right to me,
and all the cracks will crawl right through me.
All the cracks, they lead right to me,
and all the cracks will crawl right through me, and I fell apart.
As I... walked away, heard them say
"Poison hearts will never change,"
walk away again,
Turned away in disgrace,
felt the chill upon my face cooling from within

The message I am getting from this song is how two people fall in love. The guy has a bad past with the girls friends, and the girl has a bad past with the guys friends. Its more of a romeo and juliet sorta thing, but then at the same time, not really. Anyway, they end up reaching a breaking point, and they have to choose their friends or eachother. Note: "Walked away, heard them say "Poison hearts will never change,"",.
So yeah....this is sort of whats happening to me in real life...and as far as the emo thing goes, I have to agree with the below comments. Just because a song touches your heart, and doesnt have anything to do with gun oding wannabes, makes it emo? lol xD
Ja to the ppl down below.... Emo isnt a stereotype its a type of music...and in Japanese, EMO means POTATO. :D sorry, just had to get that out. also, this song is awesome Afi is possibly my fave band of all time. XoXo, Liebe, Whatever, Bye.

afi is brilliant. and this song is too. why must everything and everyone be labled? "emo" means emotional. so people are in touch with thier feelings? at least they dont pretend to be numb insensitive assholes :]
IDIOTS | Reviewer: Sabrina | 8/18/09
This song is not emo but seems to me to be about someone who is not trusted nor liked by his/her peers.Put yourself in the position of that person and you can feel the profound sadness of being isolated and alone. To put a label on such a strong message is pure sterotyping which one should never do because stereotypes arn't usually right. When people learn to feel and understand the music and lyrics, can they come to terms with themselves or alternatly, continue living a lie.
Just a little something | Reviewer: Kain | 6/22/09
I think that the title well reflects the core of the song. One thing I have never liked about A.F.I. is how short the songs are, which makes me question there abilities, but whatever. Quick note

Ok. I never write on stuff like this. But I couldn't help it after seeing all the other posts."
Who ever posted this should never post again. Emo's don't fight back, they get fucked up, believe me, I've tried to find out why, but they all just cower. I slapped one in the face while residing in New Mexico, and they honestly couldn't bring themselves to do anything about it, cept cut themselves later, all ashamed. Or, maybe he didn't want to do anything cuz I'm 6'4 dark and ominous looking (it was cold, I was wearing a trench for the day). Either way, evolution tells us not to stick up for the dummies, and I tend to agree.

The emo thing-who the fuck cares?
I'm not an emo, for the record. But I don't see the point in hating other people and judging just because they are not like me. I don't like most "emo" music but I won't not listen to something just because of it's classifisation.
Emo's - I'm sticking up for you here. I don't agree with little followings and trends, but everyone else who puts you down is just sad.
Everyone else - If emo's want to do their little thing, and possibly cut themselves etc, leave them to it. It is just quite sad that you can spend all of your time scouring across the internet, trying to find people that you don't like through completely materialistic reasons, to write your unwanted opinions publically.
One last thing, and I'm not being unreasonable, if you are an emo or any other "category (ugh!)" that is getting ripped on, on the internet. Defend YOURSELVES, not "emo" or whatever. That is just fucking stupid.

I don't think emo is an insult! But either way afi is not emo. especially compared to Ohio is for lovers by Hawthorne heights for reals I mean " cut my wrists and black my eyes"? Yeah afi is not emo! And I love them anyway! I luv this song and this time imperfect and bleed black and days of the phoenix and this celluloid dream which I am listening to as I type! Well yeah I don't have time to type in all of their songs so I'll stop there. Btw so sorry for the person who got a pickle jar thrown at them ( even though it's kinda funny) who would thro a jar at a 12 yr old! K I'm 13 so I'm goingg to have to watch out for flying pickle jars!
this song is awesome, these comments are silly | Reviewer: Ravensong | 3/3/09
Emo was a genre before it was a way to describe kids in chucks and blue-jeans. Calling someone an emo-kid is the equivalent of calling someone a punk or a metal-head... it shouldn't mean anything, but there are connotations and misunderstandings that go along with all of them. That said, I have no qualms with referring to a good portion of AFI's work as emo, including this song, which is a wonderful piece of music and part of a glorious album from a band that I gladly go to see in concert.
After all, in the end it's all punk anyways, and quipping and complaining about what label best fits each band is... silly.

odd | Reviewer: lee | 8/10/08
emo has become a general term that is thrown around almost all bands/singers hit a point where they sing a song that touches the audiences heart...isn't that emo it's emotinal no matter the genre..it's bound to happen for all,but as long as i've listen to afi the band just took on this term (unapprovingly) after they became more popular...so maybe mainstream makes us lazy... when we have no desire to look further into the history or evoultion of our favorite bands...we accept labels to make it easier on us
Love this song...and Miss Murder too, but... | Reviewer: \\\ | 3/2/08
I'm slightly confused cos you're all talking about Miss Murder on here while it's actually The Leaving Song, but hey, I'm not criticizing anyone...
I really like The Leaving Song, ever since I first heard it and was singing it for weeks non stop afterwards. Especially the first part: Walked away, heard them say, "poison hearts will never change", walked away, again.
