Oh how do you do, young Willy McBride
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside
And rest for a while in the warm summer sun
I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done
And I see by your gravestone you were only nineteen
When you joined the great falling in 1916
Well I hope you died quick
And I hope you died clean
Or Willy McBride, was is it slow and obscene

Did they beat the drums slowly
Did they play the fife lowly
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the last post and chorus
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind
In some loyal heart is your memory enshrined
And though you died back in 1916
To that loyal heart you're forever nineteen
Or are you a stranger without even a name
Forever enshrined behind some old glass pane
In an old photograph torn, tattered, and stained
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame

Did they beat the drums slowly
Did they play the fife lowly
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the last post and chorus
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

The sun shining down on these green fields of France
The warm wind blows gently and the red poppies dance
The trenches have vanished long under the plow
No gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now
But here in this graveyard that's still no mans land
The countless white crosses in mute witness stand
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man
And a whole generation were butchered and damned

Did they beat the drums slowly
Did they play the fife lowly
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the last post and chorus
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

And I can't help but wonder oh Willy McBride
Do all those who lie here know why they died
Did you really believe them when they told you the cause
Did you really believe that this war would end wars
Well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame
The killing and dying it was all done in vain
Oh Willy McBride it all happened again
And again, and again, and again, and again

Did they beat the drums slowly
Did they play the fife lowly
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the last post and chorus
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

Review about The Green Fields Of France

love this song ♥ | Reviewer: Emilie | 4/25/09

just to answer a few of the questions here on the first page of reviews, yes, the original song was Scottish (titled No Man's Land, by Eric Bogle). Although the song is Scottish, Willie McBride was a private in an Irish regiment, possibly buried in Authuille British Cemetary?. There were a lot of Willie McBride's who died, though, so I'm not completely sure which one the song is about.

Deadly! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/23/09

This is such a beautiful song...I don't think I've really heard a bad version of it atall!

And...Yes almost all of the DKM's bloodline's trace to Ireland.

The writer was Scottish but the subjects name is Irish!

It's about both sides though.... same as every war.... the powers that be....talk the young and naive into doing their dirty work. Promise them the world...and build them up into machines...till the reach the battle field...and there's no turning back!

War is not pointless of course... it's just the way they are run that isn't pretty...but...we'd not have any bit of relative "freedom" here in Ireland today if we'd not fought...same as North America same as quite alot of nations!

History is of course dictated by the victor... but... right now!..that doesn't even matter... (almost)The entire media is owned by a small elite...and thus..makes it (almost)impossible to know anything about what's going on in reality in wars across the world!!

Are these "terrorists" living in caves and out smarting everyone?!?!

Is Bin Laden a cia/fbi agent?!?!

What actually happened in 9/11?!?!

And yea... . . the media!!... . . .history will again...be dictated by the "victor" ( greatest liar!)

Great song | Reviewer: Brian | 1/19/09

This song is beautiful, touching, and obviously sad. I will have to listen to the original as well. I know the original is Scottish but was Willie McBride an Irishman? Been trying to look it up...I couldn't piece it together from the reviews here.

great song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/17/09

i know that this song was written by someone else, but the Murphys did an excellent job. it doesnt even matter where the song came from, because it is such a beautiful song. this song brings a tear to my eye every time i hear it.

correcting the tool... | Reviewer: kiki | 1/15/09

Actually dude, if you knew ANYTHING about the Dropkick Murphys, you would know that most of the members are of Irish ancestry... One of the only members that isn't is Al Barr... He's Scottish and German. So the next time you go off on a rant to someone, you might want to make sure you have your facts straight first, tool.

savage song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/23/08

It's one of me favourite songs of all times along with grace by the wolftones and ere ya man sayin its a scotish song so what if it is jaysus dont have a hissy fit over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! u tool as u like ta say....

please, stop it | Reviewer: james | 7/23/08

all you guys that say tool or insult eash other on this page, stop it. it doesnt matter if its irish, scottich whatever. it has different meanings, its a song, its supposed to apply to as many people on as many levels as it can so it doesnt matter how many soldiers died(i know it matters) and it doesnt matter what your background is (not really) and it most certainly doesnt matter where we were born, because i know im irish, scottish and british and damn proud of it

for the record | Reviewer: The Scribbler | 7/11/08

First off, this song is utterly beautiful, no doubt about it.
But...
You guys have it in your heads that no matter what, war is unnecesary and evil and all it does is hurt and blah blah blah...
You seem to forget that while yes it is sad that so many young soldiers die, they don't die by accident. Each one knew the risks that he took and charged the front lines anyway. To make them seem innocent and yet at the same time completely ignorant is wrong on so many levels thats its appalling.
I shouldn't have to explain that freedom isn't free, and while yes there have been wars that seemed kinda pointless (mostly just WWI) I would say that there is a lot of good that comes from wars. The jews would sure say that WWII was kinda good. The world was made a better place for all freedom with lunatics like Hitler, Mussolini or, more recently, Sadam removed from their places of power. It is for that reason that soldiers fight and die so that all their loved ones back home won't have to experience the kind of tyranny that such evil people use.

How many were "Winners". | Reviewer: Capt. Vick Hartnell | 4/16/08

I agree, these sorts of discussions always seem to degrade into squabbling debates over silly details and that's not what it's about. this is a truly beautiful song whatever way you look at it. Another very simmilar is "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda." Same basic story, same ideas, even a very simmilar tune. I love that DKM can do something so sombre next to all their other up-beat angry stuff. And although this song was written about WWI it's really about the folly and sorrow of war in general and that can be any war, WWI, WWII, Viet Nam, Iraq it doesn't matter how many died, or how few, people always die in wars, wives lose husbands, children lose fathers, mothers lose sons, because thats all war is: loss. No one ever really wins. Not the people who matter anyway, the soldiers, the real people. Here's a little quote from a brilliant TV series, see if any of you can recognise it:

SIMON
You know what they say: History is programmed by the winners.

ZOE
Nearly half a million people lay dead on that field at day's end, about a third of them 'winners'. Can you imagine the smell? Can you imagine piling up the bodies of soldiers -- of friends -- to build a wall 'cause you got no cover? Blood just kept pouring out of them, you'd slip in it half the time, [and] find out bloodbath is not just a figure of speech.
