Kenny Chesney The Good Stuff Lyrics

Last updated: 01/09/2014 05:17:27 AM

Well, me an' my lady had our first big fight,
So I drove around 'til I saw the neon light.
At a corner bar, an’ it just seemed right.
So I pulled up.

Not a soul around but the old bar keep,
Down at the end an' looking half asleep.
But he walked up, an' said : "What'll it be?"
I said: "The good stuff."

He didn't reach around for the whiskey;
He didn't pour me a beer.
His blue eyes kinda went misty,
He said: "You can't find that here.

"'Cos it's the first long kiss on a second date.
"Momma's all worried when you get home late.
"And droppin' the ring in the spaghetti plate,
"'Cos your hands are shakin' so much.
"An' it's the way that she looks with the rice in her hair.
"Eatin' burnt suppers the whole first year
"An' askin' for seconds to keep her from tearin' up.
"Yeah, man, that's the good stuff."

He grabbed a carton of milk an' he poured a glass.
An' I smiled an' said: "I'll have some of that."
We sat there an' talked as an hour passed,
Like old friends.

I saw a black an' white picture an' he caught my stare,
It was a pretty girl with bouffant hair.
He said: "That's my Bonnie,
"Taken 'bout a year after we _ wed."

He said "Spent five years in the bottle,
"When the cancer took her from me.
"But I've been sober three years now,
"'Cos the one thing stronger than the whiskey:

"Was the sight of her holdin' my baby girl.
"The way she adored that string of pearls,
"I gave her the day that our youngest boy, Earl,
"Married his high school love."
"An' it's a new tee-shirt saying: 'I'm a Grandpa'.
"Bein' right there as our time got small,
"An' holdin' her hand, when the Good Lord called her up,
"Yeah, man, that's the good stuff."

He said: "When you get home, she'll start to cry.
"When she says: 'I'm sorry,' say: 'So am I.'
"An' look into those eyes, so deep in love,
"And drink it up.
"'Cos that's the good stuff.
"_That's the good stuff.

Rainmaker | Reviewer: Pres | 1/9/14

You do not understand about her being taken in the first year because you are thinking of this world and not the "other world." It is a dark world even on the brightest day- it rains when their are no clouds. "All that glitters is not gold." The "Star Spangled Banner is rife with symbolism" as is "The Good Stuff." Enough said!

Wonderful song | Reviewer: Sherry | 6/23/12

After all these years this song is still one of my favorites. It is true and timeless. Reminds me of my parents who were still very much in love after 35 years of marriage when my mom died of cancer. My Dad was heartbroken when she died. They had been married since ages 17 and 18. My Dad's faith grew stronger (it was how he survived) and he lived another 20 years; never remarrying. I think it was because he still loved my mother and never thought anyone could compare to her. Instead, he enjoyed being a "grandpa" to his six grandsons and "Daddy" to his five adult children.

My parents were very simple people with an unbreakable love. I thank God for them showing me "the good stuff" and I thank Kenny for recording and sharing this song with us. IT'S PRICELESS.

Answer to "Confused" | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/29/11

I always get really confused about that part of the song too, but "taken bout a year after we were wed" refers to the picture, and not about the death of Bonnie. I just spent a long time reading the lyrics myself because I never understand that part!
I love this song! Always have!

Good job everybody | Reviewer: Marc | 7/23/11

It's so refreshing to see the people who are here commenting. It's not like so many other places on line where folks just get so trashy. But then I guess it makes sense that the kind of person who would look up the words to this song would have good hearts. God bless you guys for having class

Confused? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/17/11

Not getting the part where Bonnie passed a year after they were wed, but it progresses to say 'the way she adored that string of pearls I gave her the day our youngest boy Earl married his high school love'. Wouldnt that mean that they had more than a year together?

I love this song. It is so sweet. Drinking never the answer, I have been through some pretty bad break ups but all my ex's and I are still friends, but though everyone of them I listened to this song, and just rembered the goodtimes, so don't go all drinking and stff if someone has a bad break up. Stay friends, work it out too. Then if that deosnt work turn this song on and think about all the goodtimes yall shared so you will laugh and feel better.:)

great song | Reviewer: jan | 6/19/10

I love this song so much! It reminds of that first year being married when I kept burning the dinner because I did not know how to cook properly. Luckily my husband is a sweety-- usually just laughed it off and never even raised his voice at me (much). I also love this song because it talks about the string of pearls, and I got MINE. After I learned to cook, that is. (Finally! Ugh...) And I ADORE my pearls too, almost as much as my daughter-- she's a handful, seriously, we should see if she got some kind of glandular problem. (Hee hee! No seriously, I LOVE my pearls.)

I am 13 years old but my grandmother listens to this song all of the time and it just makes me want to cry........i don't know why but it tells me that when i fight with my bf that drinking is neve the way to go (especially since i am under age) and to just remember allof the good times that we have had together and since i went to his concert a couple years ago and he brought me up on stage during this song and i started tearing up because i finally understood the meaning of this song. And yes Earl was born BEFORE Bonnie died 8 years before the bartender told him the story

The best song ever | Reviewer: Britt | 7/29/08

Last year i was rly close with this guy that i had been best friends with for years we never dated or n e thing but it was like we were but n e ways we were together 4 8 months and then things started to get bad nd we stopped talking for a while nd niehter one of us would talk about it nd we were at a party for a mutual friend nd he was there nd i sat there and drank bcuz the sight of seeing him made it hurt but i listen to this song and remember how good it was nd how good it is now bcuz we do talk now and are friends again nd it makes me see how stupid it all was

i love this song | Reviewer: Sarah | 7/19/08

Me and my boyfriend have been together for 2 years now. We dont get into fights often but when we do I listen to this song. And it tells me everythings ok and drinking isnt the way to go. Just go home and rememeber all the things you had in your past dont let one little thing mess that up. And shockingly this song made me realize that.

The Good Stuff = ) | Reviewer: Amanda | 3/18/08

I love this song and all of Kenny's other other favorite is "There Goes My Life" i can relate to the in the best ways and every word is completely true...really, when you get in a fight with a bf/gf you first wanna get all crunked up...but then you get sober and the problem is still there and could be worse so try to solve a-sap!

use your head | Reviewer: charli | 12/11/07

are you serious? when he says that "taken bout a year after we were wed" he is talking about the picture. so in reality they were together for a long time and had time to have children and grandchildren. then Bonnie was taken by cancer 8 years before he was telling the guy his story.

To the people confused at the top | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/5/07

The wife didn't die a year after they were married, the photo was taken a year after they were married. They grew old together (hence the grandpa part before he held her hand when she died).

The Good Stuff... | Reviewer: Leah | 11/3/07

I Love This Song, It's Like Any Cute Couple That Has A Couple Bad Turns and Then Something Turns Around, But Did They Have Earl Before The Got Married?:S

about the confusion | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/28/07

the picture was taken a year after they wed, she lived a long life then was taken by cancer....i thought the same thing the first time i heard the song
