That Summer Lyrics - Garth Brooks

Review The Song (9)

I went to work for her that summer
A teenage kid so far from home
She was a lonely widow woman
Hell-bent to make it on her own
We were a thousand miles from nowhere
Wheat fields as far as I could see
Both needing something from each other
Not knowing yet what that might be.

'Til she came to me one evening
Hot cup of coffee and a smile
In a dress that I was certain
She hadn't worn in quite a while
There was a difference in her laughter
There was a softness in her eyes
And on the air there was a hunger
Even a boy could recognize.

She had a need to feel the thunder
To chase the lightning from the sky
To watch a storm with all its wonder
Raging in her lover's eyes
She had to ride the heat of passion
Like a comet burning bright
Rushing headlong in the wind
Out where only dreams have been
Burning both ends of the night.

That summer wind was all around me
Nothing between us but the night
When I told her that I'd never
She softly whispered that's alright
And then I watched her hands of leather
Turn to velvet in a touch
There's never been another summer
When I have ever learned so much.

we had a need to feel the thunder
To chase the lightning from the sky
To watch a storm with all its wonder
Raging in each other's eyes
We had to ride the heat of passion
Like a comet burning bright
Rushing headlong in the wind
Out where only dreams have been
Burning both ends of the night.

I often think about that summer
The sweat, the moonlight, and the lace
And I have rarely held another
When I haven't seen her face
And every time I pass a wheat field
And watch it dancing with the wind
Although I know it isn't real
I just can't help but feel
Her hungry arms again

She had a need to feel the thunder
To chase the lightning from the sky
To watch a storm with all its wonder
Raging in her lover's eyes
She had to ride the heat of passion
Like a comet burning bright
Rushing headlong in the wind
Out where only dreams have been
Burning both ends of the night.

Rushing headlong in the wind
Now where only dreams have been
Burnin' both ends of the night

Wow. One of Garth's most overlooked classics. A story I have never heard told and done well. I think that whatever the age difference it is irrelevant, and something we don't have the right frame of mind to wrap our heads around. The setting of this song is in a time long before age made a difference. Unfortunately a story that could no longer be played out in the modern day we live in. But on a more figurative level we all have our own stories to tell, and certain things that trigger those memories. One of mine is metior showers, but I will keep that story for myself.

Anyone who's ever been eased in by a caring woman, isolated but for each other, unrushed, has to love this song. Perfect bbalance of eroticism and sensuality. Listen to it cross country while gazing at farmland, you'll see.

I don't generally like country, but I like this | Reviewer: Mikede | 3/10/13

I would have loved such a situation. To have had a mature woman show me the ropes, figuratively speaking, and avoid all of the awkwardness would have been great. Two lonely people sharing themselves and being for each other exactly what they both need; it doesn't get better than that.

Yeah I agree he could of been any age up to 19, and ok she had "hands of leather" but shed been doing all the work mostly by herself, so one or two years working the farm through good/bad weather would of done this to any woman of any age. So she could of been 20/30 yrs of age. Id like to think so, makes it kinda sweet! love the song and the singer.

Although a very tiny small percentage of people can relate to this song. You can still interpret it in different ways. I like to think this song reminds me of my ex and I during the best summer of our lives!

That Summer, such a well written song. | Reviewer: Shelly | 8/4/11

I have always loved this song. It has a story to tell. And as for the kid being a teenager, who is to say that the lonely widow woman wasn't in her 20's. Except when he says he watched her hands of leather, i guess that is a giveaway that she might be a tad older. lol...

This song isnt about him losing his virginity that way. As it was written it was originally a song about a single man and a married woman meeting at a party, then as his friend pointed out it's hard to feel ok with the characters, Garth changed it up some. I also see a lot of criticism over the kid being 17, but I see that nowhere in the lyrics. And as he says "A teenage kid so far from home." There's no indicator as to his age. 18, and 19 are both still "Teen" ages.

yeah i will admit that it may be a bit unusual the way he lost it, but think out losing your virginity, but not veiwing it as a mistake. just to remember it in a loveing way, under any circumstances and feeling that connection when he says it its powerful:
we had a NEED to feel the Thunder
To CHASE the lightning from the sky
To watch a storm with all itsWONDER
RAGEING in each other's eyes
We had to ride the Heat of Passion
Like a comet burning Bright
Rushing headlong in the wind
Out where ONLY Dreams have been
Burning BOTH ENDS of the night.

No doubt hes a great artist and has talent... Where do you come up with those lyrics? Why would you say THAT? Haha losing your virginity to a widow when your a teen working on a farm doesn't seem like something you would publicize. Great singing voice, good tune, IDK about the lyrics...
