THE PARTY'S OVER (HOPELESSLY IN LOVE) Lyrics - Journey

Review The Song (2)

You never call me up
When I'm alone at night.
What can this poor boy do,
When he's hopelessly in love with you?
So I will tell you now
This love is fallin' down.
Just what more can I do,
When I'm hopelessly in love with you?

Hopelessly in love
Hopelessly in love
Hopelessly in love with you.

So I will tell you this,
Our love is in a fix.
Just what more can I do.
When I'm hopelessly in love with you?

You never call me up

Hopelessly in love
Hopelessly in love
Hopelessly in love with you

Hopelessly in love
Hopelessly in love
I'm hopelessly in love with you

Oh, bye-bye, baby
The party's over,
I have gone away.
The party's over,
I have gone away.
The party's over,
I have gone away.
The party's over,
I have gone away.
Oo, the party's over,
I have gone away.

Hey Dave! I know it's been nearly a year since you wrote about this song, but I wanted to just add my 2 cents.

Back in 1980 I bought Journey's "Captured" live album, cuz they were playing certain cuts on the radio, like "Wheel in the sky" and so I wanted the album. When I bought it (I guess I was 13 at the time) I just devoured the whole album - not a bad song on there.

"The party's over" was the very last song on the album and when it started for the first time I noticed right away that it wasn't "live." As I recall, I didn't instantly fall in love with the song - I think it started to grow on me after about the third time through - then it soon formed itself into the soundtrack of my youth and it takes me back every time I listen to it now.

Journey wrote a ton of great songs, but I'd have to say this one resonates within me unlike any other song of theirs. Sort of like the feeling of having a girl you're absolutely crazy about in your youth break up with you, yet for some reason you don't feel sad cuz it's somehow a happy song but with sad lyrics....

And I know what you mean about playing it like 10 times in a row! I love everything about the song, the drums, Neal's guitar part as well as Steve's feel and just the way he channeled the cry of every broken, bleeding, love-sick teenage heart through his soulful singing style, "The party's over...I have gone away."

The other thing I really love about this song is the Synthesizer part you can hear in the 2nd part of the chorus, where Steve keeps repeating, "Hopelessly in love, Hopelessly in love" as well as during the "party's over" half of the song. There's just something "haunting" in a non-creepy way about those 4 notes that session keyboard player wrote into the song. I don't know how to fully describe it. I guess it takes me back emotionally to whatever it was I was dealing with at that time of my life - sort of a combination of mixed emotions.

And would you believe I lost track of this song for about 20 years!?!??!

Anyway, just wanted to give you a holla back about a song we both love.

Cheers!

The best song you never hear on radio anymore! | Reviewer: David Sipes | 1/3/10

This song just popped into my head in July 2008 and I couldn't shake it. I immediately realized that I didn't have a copy of this song anywhere, not even on cassette. I searched the record stores for a copy of Captured, even a used copy, to no avail. I then went to Walmart to find a copy of Greatest Hits, only to find that the song isn't on it. However, I did find a copy of The Essential Journey, with the song at the end of disk two. I played the song a dozen times trying to write down the lyrics. When I saw this website, I realized I made only one error--substituting "mess" for "fix". I knew it didn't quite rhyme! Since then I've played the song at least once a day for a year and a half, often as much as 10 times in a row! I'd known this song ever since 1981 when it was played (in Baltimore and Washington) alot. Schon's guitar is spectacular! I'm still hearing new sounds from his licks. Valory's Bass is funky--as written by Perry--you will need you best bass capable headphones to hear it-- earbuds (snicker) just will not cut it! I hope I don't wear out the CD.
There's a great live version on the Live in Houston 1981 Album, c 2006. Please email me with your comments, I'm looking for true Journey fans. When I was growing up I always thought that Journey were distant runners up to my favorite rock band-- Foreigner. Please try to impress me! (Ha! Ha!)This song is too good to be forgotten. Request this song everywhere: Flashback, The Deep End, Backtrax USA, classic Rock, Classic Hits, Hits of the 80s, best of 1981. My girlfriend almost never calls me up either!
