Skyline Pigeon Lyrics - Elton John
Review The Song (10)
Turn me loose from your hands
Let me fly to distant lands
Over green fields, trees and mountains
Flowers and forest fountains
Home along the lanes of the skyway
For this dark and lonely room
Projects a shadow cast in gloom
And my eyes are mirrors
Of the world outside
Thinking of the ways
That the wind can turn the tide
And these shadows turn
From purple into grey
For just a Skyline Pigeon
Dreaming of the open
Waiting for the day
He can spread his wings
And fly away again
Fly away skyline pigeon fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind
Just let me wake up in the morning
To the smell of new mown hay
To laugh and cry, to live and die
In the brightness of my day
I want to hear the pealing bells
Of distant churches sing
But most of all please free me
From this aching metal ring
And open out this cage towards the sun

Remembering FA, my dad. | Reviewer: Sunshine | 5/3/12
As a child, hearing this song always gave me a feeling of freedom. I used to imagine myself flying like a bird, free to go any place I wanted to. Elton is one of my favorite artists and this is certainly one of his best songs.

I love this song, I remeber my childhood days here in Philippines. It was February 25, 1986, 25 years ago. Philippines is on Martial Law by former president Ferdinand Marcos. I always hear this song when I listen to the radio in that times.

I,too, want this song at my funeral. It is a favorite and my children know it. Not so much that it is a sad song but that I absolutely love it. It has touched my life so many times over. I will never tire of it and usually will hit the rplay on my iPOD every time it plays.
Magic touch | Reviewer: Mariano Barros | 4/3/10
On May 1977 I was a 20 years old midshipman sailing on the Chilean Esmeralda training ship, it was a dark night in the middle of the Indic Sea ... I was alone on the deck watching millions of stars shining over the sky ...suddenly someone at the Officers Room played this magic song and the music filled the silence of that night...that was my magic touch with this wonderful Elton's song...
Skyline Pigeon is the best! | Reviewer: Susan | 8/20/09
For me, "Skyline Pigeon" is the very best Elton John song, ever! It means so very much to me, on so many levels. I lost a daughter (who died needlessly and tragically at the age of 21). It reminds me of how fleeting and brief life is.
It's the song I want played when I die (and my husband and grandson know this) after I'm cremated. It's just incredibly touching and personal - and the perfect example of how a song, a "gift" by an artist can mean so much to us "common folk." Thank you, Elton!
I know the meaning... | Reviewer: JoeyBaggadonuts | 6/17/09
This song is his coming out song.
"But most of all please free me
From this aching metal ring
And open out this cage towards the sun"
The aching metal ring is symbolizing the hetero image he is portraying to the public. All he really wants to do is come out of the closet and be free; be himself.

Great Song | Reviewer: amy | 11/29/07
One of my personal faves of E.John/B.Taupins writings. First appeared in '69 (I think) on Empty Sky LP. Has been re-recorded many times. Was also played by Elton @ the funeral of Ryan White (the boy who died of AIDS).
I love Elton | Reviewer: Elvie | 10/27/07
This is one of his songs that I can listen and sing along over and over again. I'm not sure if this is one of his really big hits, but for, its should be one of his biggest.
Song is great!!
