Shelter From The Storm Lyrics - Bob Dylan

Review The Song (9)

’Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

And if I pass this way again, you can rest assured
I’ll always do my best for her, on that I give my word
In a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved
Try imagining a place where it’s always safe and warm
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail
Poisoned in the bushes an’ blown out on the trail
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

Suddenly I turned around and she was standin’ there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

Now there’s a wall between us, somethin’ there’s been lost
I took too much for granted, got my signals crossed
Just to think that it all began on a long-forgotten morn
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much, it’s doom alone that counts
And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

I’ve heard newborn babies wailin’ like a mournin’ dove
And old men with broken teeth stranded without love
Do I understand your question, man, is it hopeless and forlorn?
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes
I bargained for salvation an’ they gave me a lethal dose
I offered up my innocence and got repaid with scorn
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

Well, I’m livin’ in a foreign country but I’m bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor’s edge, someday I’ll make it mine
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

’Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form”

The “other life time” may symbolize the period following the ‘Fall of Satan’. and/or the ‘Fall of Man’ in the Garden of Eden. Toil (came after God’s curse) and blood (was shed by animals for the atonement of sin).
In the beginning, before man was created Satan was blessed with the gift of a heavenly atmosphere, and placed in a position of leading the angels in worshiping the Lord. God made him so much of a musician, he, himself, was like a built-in instrument. “Thou art the anointed cherub; and I have set thee so. Thou has been in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering...and thy pipes were prepared in thee the day you were created...Thou was perfect in thy ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in thee.” (Ezekiel 28:13-16) This iniquity came in, darkening his mind with envy, jealousy and hatred towards GOD when Lucifer decided, with his free will, to over throw the throne of GOD. (The very ONE who created him!) ...”Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou are not GOD; you shall be brought down to the pit, and die the deaths of them that are slain in the midst of the sea....
(Ezekiel 28:2,5,7-8)...”the road was full of mud” may refer to Satan being cast down to die the deaths of them that are slain of the sea. “When blackness was a virtue” Satan’s mind is so messed up, since the beauty of his wisdom and brightness was defiled that he says “blackness (meaning sin) was a virtue.”
When the Light of the Lord leaves there is no spiritual light. Now, he knows only death. His very nature is to “steal, kill and destroy.” (John 10:10) “There was a war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan, which deceived the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Jesus said, "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven." Luke 10:17.
“A creature void of form,” ‘void of form’ means he is a spirit being.
“I came in from the wilderness” may be taken from the scripture that speaks of Lucifer being “cut down to the ground” where “he made the world as a wilderness” (Isaiah 14:12,17) This has to be Satan, not Jesus. Jesus came in through the conception of the Holy Ghost that was prophesied by Isaiah (Isaiah 7:14)...”The Lord, Himself will give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Immanuel means, “God is with us”) In the New Testament it says, IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD, AND THE WORD WAS WITH GOD, AND THE WORD WAS GOD. THE SAME WAS IN THE BEGINNING WITH GOD. ALL THINGS WERE MADE BY HIM; AND WITHOUT HIM WAS NOT ANYTHING MADE THAT WAS MADE, IN HIM WAS LIFE; AND THE LIFE WAS THE LIGHT OF MEN. AND THE LIGHT SHINES IN DARKNESS; AND THE DARKNESS COMPREHENDED IT NOT...HE WAS IN THE WORLD, AND THE WORLD WAS MADE BY HIM, AND THE WORLD KNEW HIM NOT....HE CAME UNTO HIS OWN, AND HIS OWN RECEIVED HIM NOT... BUT AS MANY AS RECEIVED HIM, TO THEM HE GAVE THE POWER TO BECOME THE SONS OF GOD, EVEN TO THEM WHO BELIEVE ON HIS NAME.
AND THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, AND DWELT AMONG US, (AND WE BEHELD HIS GLORY AS OF THE ONLY BEGOTTEN OF THE FATHER) FULL OF GRACE AND TRUTH. (John 1-14)
Getting back to the theme of “Shelter from the Storm” which is emphasized in the repetition of the line, “Come in” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm.”
Who welcomes Satan in? The world who is in opposition to God’s will. What is Satan seeking after? Satan has always wanted to rule the world because of his lust for power. He is so lost he will never seek the Lord.
If I pass this way again, you can rest assured I’ll always do my best for her, on that I give my word” is a sarcasm. There is no good that the devil could do for the world. He wins it over through the deceit of flatteries, lies, lust and greed. Remember his nature is to steal, kill and destroy. (John 10:10)
“In a world of steel-eyed death” May be similar to the scripture that states, “Thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch.” (Isaiah 14:19) that is spoken to Satan. (because Satan is a spirit, and spirits cannot be contained in a grave) “and men are fighting to be warm” could symbolize the process of death when the body slowly becomes colder as the life processes are shutting down. Even at this time, the ways of the world are to just give them drugs to numb the pain, and bring a quick fix for sleeplessness, with no concern for their soul. Can’t they see the turmoil “in a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm!” There is no mention of the Saviour who has eternal life for them... She says, “Come in, I’ll give you shelter from the storm”. Minutes or seconds later, Hell is enlarged and Satan stands there laughing. “Come in, he says, I’ll give you shelter from the storm.”
“Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved. Everything up to that point had been left unresolved”.... “No risk involved” because the world in it’s lost state, doesn’t have the power of the Holy Spirit to resist the devil like the believers do. (Mark 16:17)
“I was burned out from exhaustion” Could be the result which is an outcome of the words of Isaiah 28:16-18 ....I WILL DESTROY THEE, OH, COVERING CHERUB, FROM THE MIDST OF THE STONES OF FIRE. THINE HEART WAS LIFTED UP BECAUSE OF THINE BEAUTY,THOU HAST CORRUPTED THY WISDOM BY REASON OF THY BRIGHTNESS: I WILL CAST THEE, OH, COVERING CHERUB, FROM THE MIDST OF THE STONES OF FIRE. THOU HAST DEFILED THY SANCTUARIES BY THE MULTITUDE OF THINE INIQUITIES, BY THE INIQUITY OF THY TRAFFIC; THEREFORE, WILL I BRING FORTH A FIRE FROM THE MIDST OF THEE, IT SHALL DEVOUR THEE, AND I WILL BRING THEE TO ASHES UPON TH EARTH...

“buried in the hail...poisoned in the bushes an’ blown out on the trail....
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn.” that’s what happens when you fight God. Still, the worldly ways so common to mankind, especially in these last days, are like saying to the devil, “Come in, I’ll give you shelter from the storm.” (maybe, that’s why they call the earth a “she” (mother earth). The earthly ones who need the candle light of the Holy Spirit to light their spirit are as deceived as Eve was in the Garden of Eden. (We’ve all been there, sinners saved by grace.)
“She walked up to me so gracefully, and took my crown of thorns”...could mean she took off his disguise of being an angel of light. Now, he’s worried about his reputation, ‘cause he wants to deceive more people into going to hell. “something there has been lost...I got my signals crossed.”
“The deputy walks on hard nails” doesn’t bend to satan’s schemes very easily.
“The preacher rides a mount” has an easy ride because Jesus said, “...My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30)
“The one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn” may mean because satan is just an evil spirit full of death already, he cannot be buried by the undertaker who sees a one-eyed thing - into the natural realm of physical bodies to be buried. (no spiritual eye, these corpses are just business for him).
“But nothing really matters much, it’s doom alone that counts.” That’s exactly how Satan thinks. Satan wants to bring souls into eternal death. Jesus, the Messiah, Yashua wants to bring people into eternal life....

“I HAVE SET BEFORE YOU LIFE AND DEATH, BLESSING AND CURSING: THEREFORE, CHOOSE LIFE, THAT BOTH THOU AND THY SEED MAY LIVE: THAT THOU MAYEST LOVE THE LORD THY GOD, AND THAT THOU MAYEST OBEY HIS VOICE, AND THAT THOU MAYEST CLEAVE UNTO HIM; FOR HE IS THY LIFE, AND THE LENGTH OF THY DAYS; THAT THOU MAYEST DWELL IN THE LAND WHICH THE LORD SWARE UNTO THY FATHERS, TO ABRAHAM, TO ISAAC, AND TO JACOB, TO GIVE THEM. Deuteronomy 30:19-20

”WHOSOEVER SHALL CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE DELIVERED.” Joel 2:37 9

“FOR WHOSOEVER SHALL CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED. Romans 10:13

Review from Chaplain Marilyn:
To insinuate that our Lord Jesus Christ Who is the Son of God(the second person manifestation of God in the Blessed Trinity) would come into a shelter and be alone with Mary Magdalene is a false conception of Shelter from the Storm. Bob Dylan knows the Holy Bible and our Lord....No where in the Holy Bible does it say that Jesus ever went inside somewhere to be alone with a woman. Since He was the son of man, also, He was tempted in all ways common to man. Yet, He overcame. Sometimes, He overcame through divine wisdom. The person who wrote the review calling it: “MaryMagdalenReviewer:Anonymous 10/29/13 most likely does not have a personal relationship with Jesus, or is blinded by his own human nature.
If you want to be born again, and have eternal life please say this prayer, thinking about the fact that Jesus, (the atonement Lamb of God spoken of even in the Book of Revelation) loves you so much that He would have died on the cross for you if you were the only person in the whole world. If you are like I used to be, an agnostic. Here’s the prayer I said when the Holy Spirit came into my dead lifeless spirit and gave me Life.(The only requirement for this to happen is to mean it with all of your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13)...Imagine how much pain and agony Jesus Christ suffered when they beat Him at Calvary and crucified Him because He was born here to die so we could live spotlessly clean forever before Almighty God, Jehovah. I pray that your heart isn’t so hard that it will not yield to a visitation from the Holy Spirit. It’s God’s will that “none should perish, but that all should come to repentance”. 2 Peter 3:9

Prayer for Salvation: The God who made this Universe, if you are there... And You could hear me...And it’s true about what they say about Jesus Christ. That Jesus would have died on that cross just for me, taking the punishment for my sins. Then, I receive Him. Please come into my heart and forgive me my sins. I am sorry for all of my sins. With Your help, I am willing to live my life for you. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Mary Magdalene | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/29/13

If you change the narrator into the first person female and play around a little here and there with a few of the pronouns it is ever more clear that what we have here is a tantalizing ballad about Mary Magdalene and Jesus the Christed One.

timely, timeless | Reviewer: jobe | 6/4/11

The lyrics remind me of the people suffering from the tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan. "I was burned out from exhaustion buried in the hail" "I was in another lifetime one of toil and blood, When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud, I came in from the wilderness a creature void of form" "they gave me a lethal dose" "If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born" So many here feel like this. So many people had loved ones washed away. So many are living in fear of radiation.

Poetry & the Music | Reviewer: Keith M | 1/15/10

I just heard this song on the "Jerry Maguire" video (Tom Cruise 1996), and so looked it up & printed the lyrics.

They stand successfully alone as moving poetry & magical use of words - of course his rendering with his trademark accompaniment is special too.

>>Read the lyrics to a contemporary song that you like and see if the verses can stand alone as richly as these words do. She may have given him shelter from the storm - but he gave us a new appreciation for the beauty that can be coaxed from our language.<< Amen, "IMelRoy."

Words > Music | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/20/09

Actually, he is right! The words are more important than the music, I saw him singing this songs few years ago, and his voice grew older - he dont hit all the notes - but hey - he does not have to hit all notes to tell us his message! idealism to realism.

disagree | Reviewer: dzig | 3/6/09

pardon me, but Bob Dylan was a musician, and a greatly talented one at that. to say that these words don't "need" THAT voice and THOSE chords is to kind of miss the point. he was a gifted singer, performer, and song writer. other than that, your point is (commonly repeated and) strong

Poetry is Forever | Reviewer: imelroy | 11/18/07

His poetry is his genius and it is forever. You can read these words and they will delight and challenge you as they leap off the page. There's no real need for a tripod of guitar chords to support them. The music is just gravy and mybe that's why it's so simple - a white backgound for the real art.

Read the lyrics to a contemporary song that you like and see if the verses can stand alone as richly as these words do. She may have given him shelter from the storm - but he gave us a new appreciation for the beauty that can be coaxed from our language.
