James Taylor Shed a Little Light Lyrics

Last updated: 01/19/2009 10:00:00 AM

Let us turn our thoughts today
To Martin Luther King
And recognize that there are ties between us
All men and women
Living on the Earth
Ties of hope and love
Sister and brotherhood
That we are bound together
In our desire to see the world become
A place in which our children
Can grow free and strong
We are bound together
By the task that stands before us
And the road that lies ahead
We are bound and we are bound

There is a feeling like the clenching of a fist
There is a hunger in the center of the chest
There is a passage through the darkness and the mist
And though the body sleeps the heart will never rest

(Chorus)
Shed a little light, oh Lord
So that we can see
Just a little light, oh Lord
Wanna stand it on up
Stand it on up, oh Lord
Wanna walk it on down
Shed a little light, oh Lord

Can't get no light from the dollar bill
Don't give me no light from a TV screen
When I open my eyes
I wanna drink my fill
From the well on the hill

(Do you know what I mean?)
- Chorus -

There is a feeling like the clenching of a fist
There is a hunger in the center of the chest
There is a passage through the darkness and the mist
And though the body sleeps the heart will never rest

Oh, Let us turn our thoughts today
To Martin Luther King
And recognize that there are ties between us
All men and women
Living on the Earth
Ties of hope and love
Sister and brotherhood

Soulful Insight | Reviewer: Mary Bains-Fort, Ph.D. | 1/19/09

For decades James Taylor has provided intense magnification and indepth cultural critical thought to his audiences. "Shed A Little Light" reveals the various methods "social light" can be distorted, i.e., through media, internet, politcally correct thought for the present time, or through innate ignorance. However, the lyrics reflect an acurrate depictation of social behavior through the eyes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Poignant lyrics combined with smooth melodic motifs, topped with the warmth intensity of James' unduplicatable, irreplacable tenor vocal instrument creates a musical presentation that is both on time and timeless. Thank you Mr. Taylor.

The song that made me love james taylor | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/24/07

I first heard this song on satuday night live, I had never heard of James Taylor but I watched SNL every saturday. I remember the song because this performance made me cry. It also made me rush out and purchase all of James Taylor's recordings and I have been a huge fan ever since. Shower the people is my all time favorite but shed a little light always makes me stop in my tracks and listen every time I hear it and I never fail to cry at the beauty of this song.

The best James Taylor song you've never heard | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/11/06

Check out these lyrics. Beautiful sentiment - sometimes I even get teary when I hear it. I always dig out New Moon Shine on MLK day just so I can hear this song. It's practically an "MLK Carol."
