Billy Joel She's Always A Woman Lyrics

Last updated: 08/23/2014 06:10:25 AM

She can kill with a smile
She can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child,
But she's always a woman to me

She can lead you to love
She can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth
But she'll never believe you
And she'll take what you give her, as long as it's free
Yeah, she steals like a thief
But she's always a woman to me

CHORUS:
Oh--she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh--and she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind

And she'll promise you more
Than the Garden of Eden
Then she'll carelessly cut you
And laugh while you're bleedin'
But she'll bring out the best
And the worst you can be
Blame it all on yourself
Cause she's always a woman to me
--Mhmm--

Bridge

CHORUS:
Oh--she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh--and she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind

She is frequently kind
And she's suddenly cruel
She can do as she pleases
She's nobody's fool
And she can't be convicted
She's earned her degree
And the most she will do
Is throw shadows at you
But she's always a woman to me
--Mhmm--

I thought at first he had feelings for a child, then decided he his just transferring his feelings of inadequacy. To describe a woman as a child, a thief and someone who can be forgiven because she is a woman sounds like the ramblings of an insecure and misguided man. It seems to be in the same genre as Dolly Partons song "stand by your man".

A reality to me | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/30/14

I knew a woman back in my mid twenties that hook me like the lyrics say. I never stopped loving her. We have reunited and hope to spend the rest of our lives together. That was 36 years ago. She will always be a woman to me.

On the border... | Reviewer: Joe Ghab | 5/22/14

Darlings,

I will publicly eat my hat (please procide one) if this song is not about a borderline woman.
What ot feels like to be in a relationship with one.
If you have not been yourself in such a relationship, while like the lyrics and the emotion this song conveys of actually craving for the humiliation of the one you love, and yet defend through thick and thin this cruel behavior as an acceptable part of the persona of your lover, please look it up on the internet a.s.a.p.!
Because you will be vulnerable as a target, and don't forget the 'always' also refers to this vulnerability you might have to idealize the borderline character simply for its unwavering and overwhelming intensity and sometimes elegance, that may feel like love.

Best to you all!

I see this song as B. Joel's or any man's compilation of thoughts on how women can be in the eyes or in the lives of men. If one looks closer at the lyrics on every stanza, the probability that each of this depicts different women is high enough. It could've been based on past experiences with quite a number of women - seeing the good and the bad side of her unique individuality. Bottom line is, women can be as crazy as mad cows and as sane and pure as angels from heaven but the fact remains - she will always be the woman that a man wants and needs in order to go through life till the end of his days. For what is a man without a woman? Going back to the very beginning of life: God saw that the man was lonely so He created a woman for him. Sane or insane, she is always a woman to him!

Throws Shadows | Reviewer: Mamus | 2/23/14

Great song! But if I read the lyrics, it gets me upset and sick to my stomach. I agree with the "Muse" idea wholeheartedly. Though, it hurts me so bad that someone would be so nasty (as in the behaviors of the"She" character). BJoel can seem flippant or irreverent in his songs as well, so this is not how only shes are, hes can be just as bad. LOL But the question is WHY?
Why push buttons??

Really?! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/12/14

I love this song, and it describes many people and emotions very perfectly, but not everyone!! I cannot begin to comprehend how people can describe this song as a portrait of today's women due to them being narcasistic and sarcastic, it is in fact the opposite in my opinion. This song tells about how this woman has any flaws and is emotionally unstable and child like but will always be a woman to Billy Joel because he loves her. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and to the beholder woman are many different things. To some, we are callous, to others we can be soft, but to claim that all of 'today's woman' are users and haters who are incapable of being tender and kind is a horrible and sexist generalisation that is unfair and untrue in theajority of cases. If you believe that then you do not know many woman and none properly.

As a women I do beleave this is a story about how amazing we are, bring out the best an the worst you can be only a women can make a man rage an be on top of the world the song is about how we hold the key we push thier buttons for the good and the bad. Behind every great man there is a great women who pushed him there, this isn't too say that men can't do that to a women as many of know they can make you want to kill them an also tell your friends how in love you are

love | Reviewer: jennise | 10/10/13

I love this song, personally be a woman myself I know we can get a little crazy at times, saying that to me it seems that no matter what he loves whom ever this is whether it be just as muse or an actual partner. Thats how I see it :D

A SONG I WILL NEVER FORGET | Reviewer: Lynn millson | 9/16/13

I first heard this amazing song when my sister introduced me 2 it, telling me that the words in the song was my Mum all over. When my sister let my Mum hear it, my Mum -at first wasn't sure about it but after listening 2 its words she very soon began 2 not only to like it but luv it. My sister, before she realised my Mum loved it had told her (I had introduced the song 2 her) as the words at first sounded all negative but this song made my sister and I as well as my mum laugh and hear true words (some not as good but mostly AMAZING) My lovely Beautiful 1 n a million Mum, a while after hearing that song passed away and this was one of songs that was played at her Funeral. I WILL NEVER FORGET IT

The Muse... | Reviewer: grayhorse | 9/15/13

It never ceases to amaze me the people who are certain this song is about a human woman. As far as I can tell, "She" is the Muse of Song. "She" will wound you, ruin your faith, your life, your career, and yet you pursue her - because if you are a musician, you can do nothing less. All this she takes from you, but one shy smile, one glimmer of affection, one fleeting touch of "Her" charm, and you forget all that. If you aren't a musician, then "the most she will do is throw shadows at you"...

Sexist comments! | Reviewer: Angie. | 9/10/13

Reading some of the comments actually made me want to spew!!!
I could change the title to "always a fella to me" as I've been treated so badly by my Husband of 38 years, that he fits the lyrics of this song to a tee. He's cheated on me, twice, treated me like a servant, acted like a complete coward, left me without whilst he's spent money on himself, made me feel inferior and ugly, shall I go on? All in all he's lived up to his Scorpio image and stung me over and over again. He's also a water sign, and I'm a fire sign, and boy has he extinguished my flames. All in all, this man has brought me to my knee's, but I've stood by him because after all, he's "always a fella to me" So you see guys, it isn't just the women that f*** up relationships!!

Misogyny is alive and well | Reviewer: Me. - a man | 5/26/13

I am aghast at some of these reviews. The song is a celebration of women, not a criticism. It is so far from " sarcasm" that I doubt the writer has any concept of what sarcasm is. Women are marvellous complex and individual. Strong, self sufficient and not dependent on mem. Unlike the depiction of women over the centuries. Men find this hard to accept, challenging and emasculating. But. Billy Joel does not. " blame it all on yourself cis she's always a woman to me.

Damn... | Reviewer: Ryan | 4/24/13

I dated a girl for 8 years. She left me for somebody else without a 2nd thought. This happened recently. I never heard about this song, but one of my friends sent me the name and I decided to check it out. I couldn't figure out how I felt about her, ofcourse angry and upset and all the common feelings associated with this type of situation. This song though,it fits my emotions toward her like it was tailor made. I like how he says that no matter how much she makes you suffer, you will always love her no matter what. He says that you cannot stop loving someone if you truly loved them to begin with. He says that even though she put you through hell and back, you still love her and you don't see all her flaws. To you she is perfect, even though she hurts you. This song is not about women,or a woman. This song is about how he sees HIS woman, the one that hurt him and inspired this song. I don't know this for a fact, this is the first time I ever heard about Billy Joel, but I'm pretty sure. Don't take my word for it though, google it. I am 18 years old,and this song really helped me understand my emotions

She's Always A Woman | Reviewer: Broken | 2/14/13

I dated a girl for 3 months and this was her favorite Billy Joel song...now I know why. I never really listened to the lyrics much, now that I have read them, they are this girl to a tee! OMFG...how scary and what hell I went through. This girl was psychotic...her train left the station but it didn't go anywhere...and she took me for the rollercoaster ride...and it was always in a circle. Absolute insanity!! The thing is you don't know it is happening to you until after the fact. Run for the hills boys if you find her contradicting herself constantly...it's not normal. If she is gorgeous...look away, it's a trap!!

True to life Portrait of today's women | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/15/12

Billy Joel's song is a masterpiece of sarcasm about the nature of women. For me, the song poigantly expresses what makes women twerps, that is, self-centered, egotistical, narcissistic, and ruthlessly selfish. They use the power of their sexuality to reward men who meet their laundry list of specifications, and bend to their will. They punish those who don't comply with their wishes and wants by denying them sexual favors. Any man who considers a woman as soft hearted, fragile or sensitive is in for great pain. Lastly, women establish a class system among themselves, and the men who they believe are not deserving of them. This class system is reified everyday by the quality of their dress, looks, and panache However, you can dress an ape in Verace, Gucci, and Prada, but it is still an ape. Hats off to Billy Joel for creating a portrait of women which they would never admit as true or accurate
