Seventeen Lyrics - Ladytron
Review The Song (23)
They only want you when you're seventeen
When you're twenty-one
You're no fun
They take a polaroid and let you go
Say they'll let you know
So come on
(*repeat 7 times*)
We only want you when you're seventeen
When you're twenty-one
You're no fun
When you're twenty-one
You're no fun
They take a polaroid and let you go
Say they'll let you know
So come on
(*repeat 7 times*)
We only want you when you're seventeen
When you're twenty-one
You're no fun

seventeen meaning? | Reviewer: Laura | 5/22/13
It's about how older people are drawn to youth - they want to steal the youth and beauty from a young nubile 17 year old, they are too gullible, haven't been in the world, this age is innocent, vulnerable and of course everyone wants to corrupt it, molest it and have it for themselves. Disgusting, really. I've been hit on as a woman, but never as much as when I was seventeen. Men makes such fools of themselves and how could they possibly think a young, beautiful girl would want their old ass?
17 and 21 | Reviewer: Bitron | 6/10/10
21=attempt to find integrity in this world using logic and defiance
17=true, innocent desire of unity, where no soul is above one other
also... in Foo Fighter's song called "The Pretender", that supid mind thinking "I'm not like the others" is shown as a cop with number 21 on his anti-riot uniform.
In the context of LADYTRON's lyrics... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/2/09
Everyone is taking the lyrics far too literally this is LADYTRON were talking about... look at their other songs there is a lot of symbolism involved.
In short the song is about youth (females) being used and then discarded when they're older and their innocence has been depraved/taken from them... it's not specifically about the modeling industry, although modeling is an example.
Meaning? | Reviewer: Ross | 3/2/09
I feel that this is about using girls. Like applying for porn, take a picture and tell you if they'll call you when your 21. Just how the world abuses you and how they want to get young naive people to use and throw out when they are done.
remix | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/1/08
i like the soulwax remix
the music makes it sound more sinister
and the drum beat at the start makes it sound like the idea, only being good enough at being 17, is being drummed into our heads
:)
a general view | Reviewer: beverly | 8/29/07
Not only model agencies and old men, it is the general attitude of life to the man specifically females. 17 is an age that you are not old, not child. 17 is an age that is in between and a return. After 17 you are supposed to take responsibilities (going to collage, leaving parents etc) and life gets harder. And after 21 you are count as an adult. So 17 is the only fun age that life gives to you, it takes a polaraid of yours and let you go into the hardship of life which takes all your funny part..
Models | Reviewer: Bam | 8/20/07
I think this song is about models..where did the dating come in to the song??
Ladytron Seventeen | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/19/07
On the surface this song may seem to be about modeling agencies and the desire of publishers to show youthful good health, but it also applies to dating. most men, particularly those of an older generation, seek younger mates because the girls in their age category are generally moms, or carry around so much emotional baggage it just depresses you to be around them.
Whoever | Reviewer: Shori | 7/25/07
I think can mean anything to anyone that can relate. With my past experiences it could mean someone younger dating someone older. When I started to grow up and mature, he stopped calling me. Then he was out with someone younger, like the next day. But I can also relate to the modeling. When I was about 15 or 16 I had auditions. I had it, but then I moved North and grew up and filled out. When I returned home the same woman who told me I had it, told me I didn't. Maybe I'm reading too much into this song. Hell, it's just cool.

meaning of the song. | Reviewer: pooop. | 6/27/07
yes- it is about models.
they dont want teen models-
too old. nor too young. like
hollister and abercrombie models
are usually hired around 17 yrs.
modeling agencys always take polaroids
in auditions to remember them- then maybe
they will call you. if they want you.

it's about model auditions, they take your photograph with a poloroid and call you if they want you later. nothing with dating older men, vise versa.
faded youth | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/12/07
i think the song could apply to young girls dating older guys the modeling/acting industry. i think in essence the song is about the faded glory of youth. its kidna depressing. thats why i like this song, i date older guys and as i get older the girls they see stay the same age.
makes me think what am i doing with my life.
