Set The Fire To The Third Bar Lyrics - Snow Patrol

Review The Song (39)

I find the map and draw a straight line
Over rivers, farms, and state lines
The distance from 'A' to where you'd be
It's only finger-lengths that I see
I touch the place where I'd find your face
My finger in creases of distant dark places

I hang my coat up in the first bar
There is no peace that I've found so far
The laughter penetrates my silence
As drunken men find flaws in science

Their words mostly noises
Ghosts with just voices
Your words in my memory
Are like music to me

I'm miles from where you are,
I lay down on the cold ground
sponsored links
I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms

After I have travelled so far
We'd set the fire to the third bar
We'd share each other like an island
Until exhausted, close our eyelids
And dreaming, pick up from
The last place we left off
Your soft skin is weeping
A joy you can't keep in

I'm miles from where you are,
I lay down on the cold ground
And I, I pray that something picks me up
and sets me down in your warm arms

I'm miles from where you are,
I lay down on the cold ground
and I, I pray that something picks me up
and sets me down in your warm arms

Love this song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/13/12

I love this song. I found the chorus from Dear john and wanted to know where they came from. The chorus means alot seening as my husband is deployed over the other side of the world. This song just expresses how lonely I feel at the minute.

High Five if Dear John didn't bring you here | Reviewer: Abbey | 11/7/11

i've been reading the comments about the song, and i think one theme is aparent. it's about missing something. a friend, boyfriend, girlfriend. whether you're 15 or 55 the pain you're feeling is real. we should stop patronizing young people. even if we don't understand why they feel the way they do, it's still real to them.

Gonna get these lyrics tattooed on my torso | Reviewer: Sherrie | 5/14/11

I wish I was tall enough to get the whole song tattooed lol.
This song relates to my childhood, it was pretty horrendous and I'm currently going through counselling.
People came in and out of my life at the drop of a hat. When the main person in my life left me, it was very painful. This song summed up my feelings - searching for peace.
Absolutely love SP, seen them a few times in the UK. I find all there music deep, moving and meaningful. I think a lot people find solace in there music :D x

Love this... | Reviewer: Louise | 2/25/11

I am a fan of Snow Patrol, but have only just discovered this song! And it fits perfectly into my life right now, as I have a best friend who I have known for 8-10 years who lives about 3 hours away from me... he means the world to me, and this song just means so much. Brilliant song

love this amazing song | Reviewer: lee dixon | 1/10/11

I love this song for two amazing reasons. This song is bassed on long distance love, well thats what i tend to beleve. Me and my misses love this song as i live four hundred miles away from her and this song represents our love and distance.

Meaning of the bar | Reviewer: Christine | 12/1/10

I thought I would explain a couple lines in the song that some people seem to be missing (no offense to anyone it's a different phrase mostly used in the UK).
Setting the fire to a certain bar is an actual term used for controlling the heat intensity of indoor type furnaces, wood stoves, etc. There are 3 bars, 1 being the lowest which is underburn, 2 being the middle and the "burn zone", and 3 is over burn which is too hot and can cause... well fires.
On a gas stove the bars indicate how much gas is being released and burned, or on a wood stove the bars indicate the level of air flow through the stove which controls the intensity at which the fire can burn (which also depends on wood variety).
So from here make your own meanings of the fire being on the first bar alone, and on the 3rd bar upon reuniting.

He's miles from where I am... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/8/10

This song is so poignant for me right now, I broke into tears when I heard it today on my ipod. I am in a study abroad program in Egypt which will last nine months and though I am only two weeks into it, I miss my boyfriend (who is in the states) so much that I literally feel as if not even the pyramids and all of Egypt can make up for the fact that I am without him, even though I have dreamed of Egypt my entire life. It is so hard to be here without him and the only thought that keeps me going is that I can come home and see him during the winter holidays.

Thus, I agree with the interpretation of the song regarding the difficulty of suffering physical distance between you and one you love.

Mehh | Reviewer: Cloie | 7/31/10

I think this son is about someone whose partner is in a war and thye miss them , or some other type of long distance relationship, dam, ive cryed to this song before, i really like this guy, hes not in a war or enything but i moved and i was really depressed for a while, i couldnt stop listening to this, haha it still makes me sad :(

A Possible Meaning | Reviewer: Roslyn | 7/5/10

For me the song is meant to describe what it's like to be truly heart broken. The song tells the story of a person who was once part of a deep, meaningful relationship only to wake up one day, and find the person that they loved gone. They go out looking to find peace, and hopefully to find that person again. Unfortunately, they only find the cold in both themselves, and the world. So they just give up, tossing in all of the cards, and just plead for the person the love to return to them. To me it's a very sad song, and on occasion has brought tears to my eyes.

Oh, and as a side note to Jocelyn. Until you learn how to spell (It isn't 'intrudicing' but instead 'introducing'.), and until you learn proper grammar (which includes capitalizing the first word of a new sentence, and capitalizing the letter 'I'.) you have no right to insult anyone else. You sound like a complete hypocrite. Love is a human emotion which doesn't have a minimum age requirement. Give your opinion on the song meaning (preferably with decent grammar and spelling), and stop trying to bully everyone else because from your grasp of the english language I wouldn't peg you any older then sixteen and stupid.

set fire to the 3rd bar | Reviewer: courtney | 6/16/10

this song means so much to me. especially the chorus. my best friend of 3 years who i was in love with decided she was bored with me and just left. it describes me completely how i feel whenever im alone. i lay on the ground and cry trying to figure out if theres anything i can do. but i cant

Indirectly viewed from a distance... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/9/10

To Jocelyn, you should stop enforcing such a negative view on young people, true they may be full of hormones but love is love, is it not?

I find this song sympathetic, although not directly affected by the message of the song, I can see how, for the people around me this song brings up all too real analogies... It's too difficult to explain, but anyhow I really like the song.

Love | Reviewer: Samantha | 5/26/10

I will be the first person to tell you this song has made me sit here and cry because I miss someone very much. my boyfriend had moved to away and things went sour.. but he recently came back to visit me and it's like he never had left. I want nothing more then to be with him constantly. and he wants to move back, i think he feels the same. so i listen to this song thinking about him constantly. :D it makes me smile too, because they sing about things that both him and i feel.

love | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/15/10

oh my gosh!!! i love this song. a friend from me shows me this song and now i can't stop listen to it!! and it makes me really sad when i think of ma ex boyfriend... because he cheat on mee and i couldn't stop to cry :(

:) | Reviewer: anonymous | 4/22/10

I think a lot of people are missing the main idea of the song. I know everyone has different opinions on how they interpret songs, but being that it was picked for the dear john soundtrack I think its pretty clear that this song is about long distance relationships. I'm currently in one and I relate to this song completely. You pick up where you left off with that person and nothing else seems to matter until you see them again. Its so hard to be away from the one you love and this song captures the feelings a lot of people in these types of situations may have very well.
