Schism Lyrics

Performed by Tool
Review The Song (112)

I know the pieces fit cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, fundamental differing,
Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes testing our communication
The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end crippling our communication.

I know the pieces fit cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame it doesn't mean I don't desire
To point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication

The poetry that comes from the squaring off between,
And the circling is worth it
Finding beauty in the dissonance

There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication

Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion

Between supposed lovers
Between supposed lovers

And I know the pieces fit (x8)

How does anyone not see this meaning? | Reviewer: Jm462 | 4/12/12

It was pretty well known after the Issue of revolver mag dedicated to tool came out, that there were tensions within the band during the making of Lateralus. To what extent, nobody but the band will know. This song seems to describe that "dissonance". Listen to it again with the thought of writing a song with your closest friends but having trouble finding common ground on how it should be done. Alot of metaphors as always, but almost every line in the song could describe a part of this process. There is not some crazy deep meaning behind all of tool's songs. The beauty is that we can all interpret it differently and not be right or wrong. I just felt that this was pretty staright forward. I honestly think the grudge, the patient, and schism all have to do with different views of the tedious process of writing a record and the tension that is caused, but the poetry that comes from the squaring off between the artists is worth the circling to find the beauty in the dissonance so to speak

Subtle Truth | Reviewer: Fender | 4/10/12

Any good songwriter will leave their song open to the individual's translation. That way more can enjoy the song rather than focusing on one particular group. So close your eyes, lay back, open your third eye and allow your ears to flood your emotional senses with this offering laid out before you.

why complicate? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/5/12

Why everyone trying to get some deep religious and society-related meaning out of these brilliant lyrics? Though I'm not saying you're wrong, even with subtile artists like tool, sometimes looking inside the box might be the right choice.
Dont worry, these lyrics are stunning enough if taken literally.
I dont even know if its necessary to explain anything to someone that's been into a broken relationship with a nice matching person. both making assumptions out of the other person's actions, misinterpreting them and causing pain to both, just because they were not able to talk, explain and understand instead of simplifying it into something negative.
The whole point explained in one single line: "I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing"
The rest is self describable.

Double Meanings | Reviewer: Bert | 2/7/12

I agree with what previous people have been saying about the song being about the rift between different religions despite them stemming from a shared general belief, but I also think the song and video definitely have strong sexual undertones addressing the point that most religions have a tendency to demonise perfectly natural human sexual urges. "Strangled by our coveting" "The light that fueled our fire has burned a hole between us" "No fault, none to blame it doesn't mean I don't desire to" "Doomed to crumble unless we grow", etc. All of these lyrics can seen as references to both sexuality and procreation.

Church | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/20/12

Schism is a word to describe the church dividing into different pieces. The lines "I know the pieces fit" represents that the different branches all fit together because they are the same thing. "Between Supposed lovers" Could mean a Christians faith and love in Christ.

A broader view | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/10/12

I think this song doesn't refer to lovers or brothers exclusively. It speaks of a huge rift within our society, and in its apocalyptic first-person view, it reminds me of "Limo Wreck" by Soundgarden. If people cannot connect to each other, our society will collapse and destroy itself because we cannot appreciate the "dissonance" that exists within each one of us. We all look for what suits us best, not choosing to fit together and bonding. We need to open our Third Eye and see how the pieces fit.

Tool has the answer.

Communication | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/8/12

This song is very difficult to decipher. The abstract nature that Tool tends to dwell in their songs is what makes them so unique. Every song has a very deep meaning. It stimulates us to think, which is what a lot of people need to do these days.
I think the song is about communication, not only among lovers, but society as well. This is just a personal note, but I find it interesting how in the music video the two characters look like James Maynard, the lead singer. It makes sense though, because he's using a first person perspective. He puts a lot of emphasis on "I know the pieces fit cause I watched them fall away." In my opinion, this is the act of "pointing fingers" at people as we watch Vicariously from our TV screens. But also, only he knows how to fix the issue because he was there to experience how it became an issue in the first place. This is true with society and relationships. Communication is key. People will never know what you're thinking until you tell them. There must be communication within relationships between humans or else everything will crumble.

its from a book... | Reviewer: Liber al vel legis | 1/3/12

One must fulfil one’s true Nature, one must do one’s Will. To question this is to destroy confidence, and so to create an inhibition… We are not to calculate, to argue, to criticise; these things lead to division of will and to stagnation. His lyrics reflect that of Liber al vel legis or the book of law chapter 2: 28-34.
Basically in any relationship, regardless of who or what it is between, something that sparks the two entities passion towards each other will be tested regardless of how much they love or care for each other. When at the precipice of there relationship they will either fall away due to the lack of the passion they had towards each other during the beginning or they will strengthen and grow. In the song its example is used by communication, and to argue with it, to calculate against it, and to criticize its being will doom it.

the begining of man kind | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/2/12

in the begining lyrics when he says to set two lovers souls in motion he's talking about adam and eve and says that it pretty much falls apart because they ate from the tree of life and it made us open our eyes and become just like god, to understand things like the way they god can and have wisdom like him. and because we have god like knowledge and a satan to go with it we are now doomed to die.satan is only a symbol for freewill, so we are free to do what ever we want with our godlike like knowledge but will have to die ang get judged to be excepted in his kingdom.however i believe that we are in his kingdom already. the song is pretty much saying that we are all doomed to die unless we keep our communication strong so that gods kindom don't crumble down

Tool | Reviewer: goat | 12/30/11

Hate to feel like we're killing this subject, but evil??? Lol. All I can say is, ignorance breeds contempt. Tool rocks.
Side note: I know its old, but how the f*ck did carson daly get an interview with Maynard? I couldn't have imagined a more unprepared, blathering idiot to interview one or the most creative minds of our generation... *sigh*

religeon | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/30/11

This song's main meaning is the fact that all religeons are coming from the same god,so they r pieces that fit!it makes sence goes with the title. It says that we all should communicate & not B apart because of having different religeons...
but there's still a fact:Maynard's lyrics have many different meanings inside them,so mayB all of you r right!this song connects with right in 2,cause they both have the theme:stop fighting & communicate,so don't fight over which 1 of u is right!!

also | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/15/11

i believe he is talking about music it self. look those words up and think about it..
ALL WOULD BE METAPHOR'S.
Mildewed:superficial coating of organic material.
Smoldering:existing in a state of surpressed activity.
Fundamental:essential structure or function DIFFERING..
Juxtaposed:placed side by side for comparison
Atrophy:waste away.
(EXCEPT:Dissonance:deliberate avoidance of vowel repetition.)
BUT there is many other meanings this song could have. (take good and evil for instance insert where G&E would fit.

Duality theme | Reviewer: Russian Premier | 12/11/11

I believe it refers to the concept of a person's two sides, good and evil, dark and light, not man and woman, that does not fit here, cause when a woman is a part of your head, oh shit

Communication | Reviewer: Danarro | 12/10/11

I belive this song is about the relations, with anybody. Get a good communication, fluently and clear is really hard, so the absence of this can make all things go bad. Confused and dude, the absurdness in the constant, when thw words begin in a problem and not in meddiate can make that go to the shit.

From what I can recall | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/6/11

This song had something to do with that old biblical story about how god split up humans to make them have different languages or something, it's all i can remember however, sorry.
