i'm walking out in a force ten gale
birds thrown around, bullets for hail
the roof is pulling off by its fingernails
your voice is rattlin’ on my window sill
yesterday's headlines blown by the wind
yesterday's people end up scatterbrain
any fool can easy pick a hole i only wish i could fall in
a moving target in a firing range
somewhere i'm not
scatterbrain
somewhere i'm not
scatterbrain
lightning fuse, powercut
scatterbrain

Review about Scatterbrain Emotional rollercoaster | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/10/09
I think this song is about emotion. A feeling. A longing. About corrupt governments and a media that dominates us. And a bacon sandwich worn as a hat at a jaunty angle. Some bacon pushed deep into your ears. With a parsley garnish. I'm hungry.
this songs make me feel that not the society is consuming us. it seems that the people dont get conscious about the world like it were only a game where you are the expectator.the people only live for them

This song is about a loss of meaning in society and seems to give war as a product of this. There is an abundance of useless information never before seen in human history. We were never meant to be able to process everything that is coming at us in our modern world. We no longer need to worry only about local problems and problems in our daily lives, now we are plagued by issues on a global scale. It seems that in order to cope with all these issues we ignore them by flooding our minds with useless information such as celebrity gossip, and the latest trends (fashion, cars, electronics). The overwhelming amount of bad news we repress each day along with the new garbage we fill into our heads makes us scatter brain. "yesterday's headlines blown by the wind, yesterday's people end up scatterbrain" is referring to any generation in modern society who eventually gets swept under the rug as tragic world events, culture and everything they once knew is unrecognizable.
Finally, "somewhere i'm not, scatterbrain" seems to refer to a another place or another time, most likely some traditional culture where these modern burdens did not yet exist.
Somewhere I'm not | Reviewer: scatterbrain | 1/19/09
The narrator is so enveloped in his own thoughts that he doesn't notice the things going on around him.. a woman enters his life and manages to permeate his thoughts. "Any fool" can fall in love in a way he would love to be in- normal relationships, I guess? But somewhere he has the clarity where his mind isn't lost in a storm of thought.
Funny how I put myself into my lyric interpretations..

I think this song is similar in context to his solo song "Analyze" from the eraser album. The lyrics from eraser are much more literal I think, this one is more of an abstraction and there are less words. I wonder if I'm right. I might be wrong.
yes guys, its about suicide, our daily suicides!!
we are all scatterbrain,it just reminds me this brilliant dialog of Fight Club,"GOD DAMN IT AN ENTIRE GENERATION,PUMPING GAS,WAITING TABLES,SLAVE WITH WHITE COLLARS,ADVERTISING HAS ITS TASE IN CARS AND CLOTHES,WORKIMG JOBS WE HATE SO WE CAN BUY SHIT WE DONT NEED,WE ARE THE MIDDLE CHILDREN OF HISTORY, MAN NO PURPOSE OR PLACE,WE HAVE NO GREAT WAR NO GREAT DEPRESSION,OUR GREAT WAR IS OUR SPIRITUAL WAR OUR GREAT DEPRESSION IS OUR LIVES,WE HAVE ALL BEEN RALSED ON TELEVISISON TO BELIVE THAT ONE DAY WE WOULD ALL BE MILLIONARES AND MOVIE GODS AND ROCK STARS BUT WE WONT,WE ARE SLOWLY LEARNING THAT FACT AND WE ARE VERY VERY PISSED OFF"
DREADFUL!
This song isn't about suicide.
Take the word scatterbrain . It means your thoughts are scattered... disorganized... thinking too much about many different things all at once.
in the song, he's stating everything he's thinking...
and then he says "somewhere I'm not scatterbrained" ... which mean somewhere in this life, he's calm, organized, and "zen" ...
I think this song is pretty straight forward.
it is NOT about suicide.

a "scatterbrain" is actually a word, and it means a person who is disorganized and lacks concentration. So, no, I don't think it's about suicide, but you can think whatever you want, because it's radiohead, and this band is makes songs that communicate more feeling, not necessarily any meaning at all.
Big Ideas | Reviewer: Participant | 11/20/07
I can see how some would think this song is about suicide but it seems to me more of a commentary on the sociopolitcal state of mind. "bullets for hail" being political agenda forced down on us by the powers that be thus making you a "moving target". I like the imagery of man as a house and other ideas or voices rattling our windowseals. Try finding the 4tet Remix it gives the song a whole new feel, like it sort of a news report on an old radio or something

I find myself a scatterbrained individual.
I have moments where I just go off into the distance and think of random things and can't keep set to one though, thus being scatterbrained. I look at radiohead's music as glorifying the thought that a person can be different or insane. Makes it even... admirable.
