Satellite Lyrics - Rise Against

Review The Song (7)

You can't feel the heat until you hold your hand over the flame
You have to cross the line just to remember where it lays
You won't know your worth now, son, until you take a hit
And you won't find the beat until you lose yourself in it

That's why we won't back down
We won't run and hide
Yeah, cuz these are the things that we can't deny
I'm passing over you like a satellite
So catch me if I fall
That's why we stick to your game plans and party lines
But at night we're conspiring in my candlelight
We are the orphans of the American dreams
So shine your light on me

You can't fill your cup until you empty all it has
You can't understand what lays ahead
If you don't understand the past
You'll never learn to fly now
'Til you're standing at the cliff
And you can't truly love until you've given up on it

That's why we won't back down
We won't run and hide
Yeah, cuz these are the things that we can't deny
I'm passing over you like a satellite
So catch me if I fall
That's why we stick to your game plans and party lines
But at night we're conspiring by candlelight
We are the orphans of the American dreams
So shine your light on me

She told me that she never could face the world again
So I offer up a plan

We'll sneak out while they sleep
And sail off in the night.
We'll come clean and start over the rest of our lives.
When we're gone we'll stay gone.
Out of sight, out of mind.
It's not too late,
We have the rest of our lives.

We'll sneak out while they sleep
And sail off into the night
We'll come clean and start over the rest of our lives.
When we're gone we'll stay gone.
Out of sight, out of mind.
It's not too late,
We have the rest of our lives.
The rest of our lives
The rest of our lives

Because we won't back down
We won't run and hide
Yeah cuz these are the things that we can't deny
I'm passing over you like a satellite
So catch me if I fall
That's why we stick to your game plans and party lines
But at night we're conspiring by candlelight
We are the orphans of the American dreams
So shine your light on me

Because we won't back down
We won't run and hide
Yeah cuz these are the things that we can't deny
I'm passing over you like a satellite
Cuz these are the things that we can't deny now
This is a life that you can't deny us now

To me, this song is about living and making mistakes. It's about taking risks even if you know it will hurt you, and that it's an essential part of this life, things that we can't deny.
When he says he's passing over someone like a satellite, he refers that his world, his efforts and pain revolves around a certain person|thing, and that he requires guidance from such person|thing.
It also speaks about someone who couldn't take the pressure and burden of living like that, deciding to move far away from that place, starting over somewhere else.

In a nutshell, life. I can really relate to this song for the most part.

Corrections? | Reviewer: ducky | 10/18/11

Am I the only one thinking the corrections submitted are never accepted? And not only for this song.
And there is often the need of it.
Sad for this great website :/

Btw, I agree that the song is more than just about love, it's something bigger, a way of living the life. Being concerned, faithful to what we believe, not narrow minded but in search of the truth, not asking things for ourselves but really enjoying it when it comes and taking them without greed or bias. Living our lives fully and accept (and/or ask) for help when needed.

(I'm not a native english-speaker and maybe some things are not well translated, but the main idea is there I presume)

i'm looking at the lyrics book right now, and all the corrections J made should be honoured and fixed promptly... it's kind of disgraceful, especially for such a powerfully moving song, where every word has intentions and meanings to the band and all the fans.

I already submitted a correction when it said "you can't fill your cup until you empty your lit house" so now they won't let me submit another correction. But I have a few more

You'll never learn TO FLY now -- not THE FUN now

until you're standing at the CLIFF -- not at the GATE

That's why we stick to your game plans and party LINES -- not party LIVES

at night we're CONSPIRING by candlelight -- not PERSPIRING by candlelight

She told me that she never COULD face the world again -- not never WOULD face the world

so I OFFERED UP A PLAN -- not OFFER UP MY HAND

we'll sneak out WHILE they sleep -- not WHEN they sleep

Meaning? | Reviewer: Juvenal | 3/23/11

I agree with Dom. This song is about a revolution. The line "She told me that she never would face the world again" clearly speaks that revolution is the hope for a wrecked world.
And the line "I'm passing over you like a satellite" speaks about a person that is without life meaning (sattelites don't have own orbit... they depend of a planet), so the revolution's main idea is the hope that it's looking for!

Satellite | Reviewer: Dom | 3/20/11

I hope the lady above (or below) was not refering to 'love'.

This song is about... well it's more like the story of Fight Club, a revolution from under the eyes of the law. You only join when you have lost hope in the world.

Also a correction

You can't fill your cup until you empty your lit house

You can't fill your cup until you empty all it has

Best song on their new album... | Reviewer: nukafire | 3/15/11

This song is easily the best song on their new album (to me at least) due to the truth it speaks to me.
"And you can't truly love until you've given up on it" this is the main line in the song that really speaks to me the most because I've been there before.
