The Rolling Stones Sympathy For The Devil Lyrics

Last updated: 03/21/2014 05:39:30 AM

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands a’ sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain

I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the Blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, ah yeah

I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the god they made

I shouted out,
"Who killed the Kennedy's?"
When after all
It was you and me

Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, ahhh yeah, get down, baby

(2:54) woo
(3:03) woooah

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game mmm yeah
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint

So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, have some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, mmm yeah

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, mmm yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, mmm mean it, get down

(4:43) Woo, who
ah yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
(4:52) bum bum ba ba ba do a, bum bum ba ba ba do a
(5:06) yea Ahh yeah!

Tell me baby, what's my name
Tell me honey, a can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what's my name
I tell you one time, you're to blame

Oh, who
woo, woo
Woo, who alright
(5:35) oo, oo oo
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah

well What's my name
Tell me, baby, a what's my name
Tell me, sweetie, a what's my name

oo, who, who
oo, who, who
oo, who, who
oo, who, who

oo, who, who
oo, who, who
oo, who, who
Ahhhhh, yeah

Woo woo

Who is the Devil Anyway? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/21/14

I think this song is asking 'Who is the Devil anyway?'. Evil action comes in many human forms and runs through history, we all have the power to create yet also the power to kill. Which do we choose? Who do we put in charge? Who do we blame? Who is really responsible?

Accuracy is no the nature of your game | Reviewer: Mr Somebody, through Christ | 11/16/13

No where in scripture you say? Well then I agree. Accuracy is your friend, albeit not your friend.
Lucifer is not satan? Well lets look at this "nowhere in the bible"

But first we need to state that "satan" is not a Name.its more like an adverb (discription below)

The original Hebrew term, satan, is a noun from a verb meaning primarily to “obstruct, oppose,”
Ha-Satan is traditionally translated as “the accuser,” or “the adversary.”
The definite article “ha-,” English “the," is used to show that this is a title bestowed on a being, versus the name of a being.
Thus this being would be referred to as “the satan.”

So in Genesis when he is referred as the serpent or satan we need to understand the timeline of events and that He was not called that then. He had a name.
He was one of the Devine council he was an angel. Im pretty sure Eve would have freaked out at a talking snake coming to her.
But when it was written, it was a retelling of the event and by then his name was stripped and forever known as the adversary or Satan. So that wrote it from what they knew him to be.
Not who Adam and Eve knew him to be. and this is confirmed in Ezekiel 28:12-19 When God opened his eyes to who the force was controlling the prince of Tyr.

Ezekiel 28:12 - 19 (the important parts) just google the verse to see the full text in case u accuse I am editing instead of pointing out main parts.

Ezekial talking to the prince possesed by satan.

‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
You were in Eden, the garden of God;
You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.
You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.
Your heart became proud on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor.
So I cast you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings.
All the nations who knew you are appalled at you;
you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.’

- The second sentance in black and white "you were in Eden"
Well it was wasnt Adam, Eve or God here. so it leaves one left... Satan which makes sense being cast out and all to earth and the rest of that passage is describing him.

Now we have the character described, There is one other place this description is made...

Isaiah 14:12-19

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cast down to earth, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.
19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain,
thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.

You can no doubt see they are talking about the same person here point for point from two perspectives.
Granted Isaiah doesnt mention "Eden" but he does say mountain of God, and ipso facto the mountain of God was in the Garden as stated Gen:3

Lucifer the Cast down cherub who became the enemy of God and Satan evermore.

Sorry For lengthy boring explination but I cannot allow misinformation even if unintended but many people might read that post of yours and not know any better
and blindly believe a comment possibly even made as a joke. but someone might take it seriously and fall into the whole Lucifer is the good guy and the Light masonic way of thinking.
and we dont need any more deceived in the world.

on the other side of the coin. this is a great song none the less by a great band. Ironicy as reading the lyrics now, its the same story as the bibles lucifer being at pinnicle moments in human history and power as the strings behind curtain.

Who is Lucifer? | Reviewer: Mr. Nobody | 11/1/13

Just for clarification, "Lucifer" is NOT the Devil's name. Nowhere in the scriptures does it give this name (Lucifer) as being ascribed to the Devil (satan) in the Holy Scriptures. The Bible does not reveal the Devil's personal name anywhere in the Scriptures. Accuracy is your friend! Best wishes and my you find genuine peace in your lives!

The devivils greatest trick | Reviewer: YOUR NAME | 10/22/13

In the song, the character who is asking you, or daring you to guess his name, also repeats "BUT WHATS PUZZLING/CONFUSING YOU, IS THE NATURE OF MY GAME"
A swindler, by his very nature, will do everything to make you believe the opposite of what you need to know, in order to pull a fast on and swindle you. Then he says " I tell you one time, YOUR TO BLAME"!
Well in the end, I think everyone will agree, hindsight is 20/20, but you've already been taken. So while some say "it's our own dark and twisted selfcentered, selfish, self serving ways and our evil deeds that manifest from it, which we attemp to mask, by personifying it as "the DEVIL" to excuse our intolerable cruelties towards each other, and others would say, "the devil is the reason for it", you may both be right.
When he says your to blame, what I believe he means is that it always comes down to this; our choice or choices. Granted you didn't choose a hurricane or flood, or any of the number of things that happen to us on a daily basis which are out of our control, but we still make a choice on how we will let it impact our future by the way we react to it.
I'm guessing Jesus could have ended or shortened his stay in the desert had he made a different choice, right?
And lucifer, I believe, does mean light. Don't quote me on this, but I believe, God made him the angel who played the harp and brought joy to the other angels through blissful sounds of his music. I believe the bible states that the reason he was cast out of heaven was because he felt that he directly made their joy possible and not God, or that he was directly responsible for their joy, even though I think it's says God appointed him and gave him the gift or ability to do that. Lucifer said "eh, forget the old one, I'm the new and improved in town. Kinda like some of the "microwave made" pop star of today who equalize or try to bring themselves up through defamating their predecessors, who without those who came before them, wouldn't have even set out to become the third rate no talent having, copycat, WANA BE artist they are today. Real talents, wrote their music, lyrics etc. marketed themselves, and made themselves, examples of which some of you older more music coultured adults probobly grew up listening to. That's not to say that the younger generation doesn't have knowledge of said artist and their accomplishments, but there is a difference from listening to the song on ITunes through a Bose system and actually being there at the concert in 19whYever year that so g came out. Because a pop star makes more money today, doesn't mean they are better than those who came up with the idea to begin with. I actually believe it makes you a better musician of today if you truly respect your elders, honored who came before you and what they did to pave the way for you. I admire that and respect that about artists like Justin Timberlake.
Interestingly I think that is in the bible. A commandment maybe. Respect or honor your elders/parents etc.
Clearly lucifer and some of the microwave pop stars of today, didn't get that memo.but the ones who did, prospered.
I truly liked someone's comments about the fact that even the devil has good traits. Well maybe your parent/s is/are, were/was just as bad if not worse, but somewhere they had a good something that they left behind, and it's that trait we should use as building blocks and not the easy excuse of " my parents messed me up", we should focus on.
In the end I believe the character in the song, "who ever you think he/she/it may be", like the devil, claims, "your to blame", well if you chose excuses and defeat over perseverance, or the wide door and the wide open road, well, they say: long and hard is the way, that from the dark leads to the light.
Small and Narrow is the the doorway and even more so the path, few will choose.
They say, the greatest trick the devil pulled is fooling man into denying his existence.
Instead of focusing on the negatives of those before us, we should probobly focus on the positives and try to follow in those footsteps.
Oh and religions, well their like opinions, in the bible in the Old Testament, the first four books, which are used by many, I think it says something to the effect that the ones who followed Jesus in his lifetime, were known as "the followers of the way"
And I think it was Jesus who said, " I am the truth, the light, the way" or something like that.
I am not a theologist, historian or anything of the sort, I am not claiming to know better or stating that I'm either right or wrong. I'm simply making an observation, I struggle everyday with much temptation and am far from anything that could be considered perfect.
I am humbled by the greatness that is this world that I've come to know.
I know that before we are embryos, we come into this life struggling to survive, fighting for one chance, in competition with many, just to be the sperm that fertilizes the egg, which develops into what we now know to be our selves and the beginning of life. Since before we are born we are in competition for that 1 spot. As a species, self serving, and self centered, once we become an embryo, like any growth, we take and take from our host until we are ready to move on to the next phase, we are born and we take some more, without regard what so ever for our mother. When in the womb a woman and when we are born, the earth. But eventually, through out time, we learn that we have a choice.
So I, you, we, can choose to make the future a better one, or not, but the future starts now.
Choice is ours,
Thank you for your time, it is priceless

Empathy for the Despising Believers | Reviewer: Benjamin Marx | 10/22/13

They were too high, had to get a song out, Keith was probably dabbling in Bulkagov's books, and all that Transcendental- Beeds stuff the Beatles were getting into was a bit too much for the Always Stoned Stones. So why not throw in line about the counterfactual to all the wrongs that the Semitic traditions and others in the name of Religion, God, Jesus have brought upon the world : sme amount of Evil as secularists, indifferent Pilate, Napeloeon, Hitler and the lot. The line of Kennedy's as Richards narrates in hi 'LIfe' was thrown in while recording because just then news broke of JFK's assassination. These guys are not William Blake, or Coledridge or Rumi writing poetry, but lyrics to go with rhythms spinning in their head, or some vain idea or needing a tranquilizer from the coke-spin (read 'LIfe' and you'll understand better the dynamics on what gets Stones into writing meaningful and equally meaningless lines, or pinching from newspaper headlines or lullabies, 'Angie', for example. They are having fun and we are kneeling down and praying either to God or to Satan; neither matters to the fix in music the Stones need day-in and day-out (I don;t mean 'fix' as in drugs, but as in music qua roll n'rock.

Stupid people... stupid people everywhere. | Reviewer: Chris | 8/22/13

Okay, first of all cut the shit.

Whatever bullshit you've made up in your little heads about this having some special meaning other than what's blatantly in the lyrics, forget it. This isn't a song dedicated to religious beliefs of angels and demons, it isn't about evil humans.

They took the whole 'Lucifer' thing and wrote lyrics as if it was written from the 'character' or personality as you would say, of Lucifer himself.

It isn't a song debating whether Lucifer is real or not, it's simply a take on his character in a song, 'Just call me Lucifer!'.

Now listen to the song over again and depict the person talking as Lucifer.

Thanks, now kindly shut up and enjoy the song and quit bringing your religious bullshit into it, no-one gives a shit.

This song is about how HUMANS are the ones who are subjected to evil while ironically and tragically the creators of it. We cant understand why we would do something so hurtful, unforgiveable, and damaging to ourselves. So out of the mental and emotional coping of our psychosis we illude. We illude a character and villain to place the blame on: Lucifer...the devil. But really...its us. The human race must admit its insane. So that we mat begin to heal and cure ourselves. We are the only ones responsible foer the things we do to eachother. There is no such thing as evil, only beauty.

Honestly? | Reviewer: Mischka | 2/16/13

It's about human beings and evil.

Who rode the tanks in the Blitzkrieg? Evil humans. Who was with Jesus Nazarene (a human being, or for you Christians, a human body) in the desert? Himself and the evil he had to confront as he himself was human. Who killed the Romanovs ("Anastasia screamed in vain")? Humans, and killing's evil, so... evil humans. Who made a furor about the deaths of the Kennedys? Humans. Yet, who killed the Kennedys? You and me. Humans.

Poetic Licence | Reviewer: Nick | 12/16/12

This song is heavily influenced by a book called The Master and Margerita by Mikhail Bulgakov. It would be a wonderful if the happy clappers all bothered to read this book first before using this song as an opportunity to market their brand of religion.

sympathy for the devil... | Reviewer: mkc | 11/6/12

This is a great song by the stones. It's almost too great, even for the RS. By that I mean, well, I believe lucifer had a lot of input in writing it. It has a timeless, supernatural feel to it. So, don't be fooled! If it's of the devil, (the father of lies) then it's out to deceive you in one way or another. I love this song because usually the devil operates in a fashion that he doesn't want you to know he's operating in. In 1968 he finally came clean and admitted he does what, any good bible scholar knew that anyway, right? Be advised: this song is used by many in the satanic realm to announce satan's arrival at any of several events...all in all, it's a great rock tune influenced by the devil. Aren't they all, though?? (Sinister laugh)

What is wrong with people | Reviewer: Joseph | 11/3/12

Whatever the guy who posted last is smoking, I want some. That book was written by man, interpreted by man, and abused by man. I hope that some day people will get over their inability to take responsibility for their lives and realize that the only person to blame for you life sucking is you.

Rolling Stones | Reviewer: Robin | 9/4/12

Everyone will know the truth about Jesus Christ one day whether they want to or not. Pick up a King James version bible and read it for a few years. You'll be surprised what is revealed to you. There is good & evil in this world. There is a heaven & hell. God exists and Jesus Christ was crucified and rose again to forgive our sins. Free gift. You only have to believe your born a sinner, & have no hope without him, then confess this to the world. Denying him won't change the fact that he does exist.God bless...

Rev.12 chapter | Reviewer: Ryan | 7/20/12

I love this song!!! The d Devil is boasting about how he has created all this havoc yet he doesn't mention how Jesus Christ evicted him from heaven ( not that the song should have). It made me do research... Jesus Christ came to earth to give His life as a Randsome Sacrifice for fallen mankind. The Devil is angry he did nothing to JC....

paradigm | Reviewer: ripper_013 | 4/13/12

how can you say you glorify satan when satan comes from christianity? dont you even think that believing in satan automatically makes you a believer of god? one can not exist without the other period.

instead of talking about religion and shit lets talk about the merits, if any, of the song. for me, this one is goood. and yep i like the lyrics. how he smirks and boasts of his deeds. like he is shitting you. hehehe. well, i read the lyrics when i listen to music. if you dont care about the lyrics then youre missing a lot... a good story, a bad poem, naivete i guess? but if youre not particular with the lyrics then how can you sing some north korean song?
