Restless Farewell Lyrics - Bob Dylan

Review The Song (1)

Oh, all the money my whole life spends,
Slips into the hands of friends,
Be it right or wrongfully;
Oh, every girl that ever I touched,
I did not do it harmfully,
And every girl if ever I hurt,
I did not do it knowingly.

To remain as friends we need the time
To meet demands, and stay behind;
My feet are fast, they point away from the past.
When I see the sign says, closing time.. I'll bid farewell, and move on down the line.

Oh, every foe, that ever I faced,
The cause was there before I came,
And ev'ry cause that ever I fought,
I fought if full, without regret or shame.
Oh, ev'ry thought that's strung A knot in my mind, I might go insane if it couldn't be sprung
These thoughts are not to stand naked before unkowin' eyes.
It's for myself, and my friends my stories are sung.

Time ain't tall, but on time we depend
To be a special kind of friend.
Though the line is cut,
It ain't quite the end,
I'll just bid farewell,
Till we meet again.

Oh, a false clock tries to tick out of time
To disgrace, distract, and bother me;
The dirt of gossip blows into my face,
And the dust of rumors covers it
To try to make me quit;
But if the arrow is straight,
And the point is slick It can pierce through dust no matter how thick.

So I'll make my stand, and remain who I am. I bid farewell, down the road, again.
Darkness dies as the curtain is drawn;
May our eyes see the light of dawn,
Like truth exposing wrong.

I bid farewell in the night on my way
To where I belong,
If I see the day, I'd have to stay,
So I'll bid farewell in the night,
And be on my way before the break of day, again;
Farewell to rememberin' how it could have been.

Oh, it's a man's world, I hear people say,
A man can leave his loving girl and go far away
To play his music, sing and write his songs,
And she'll be waiting for him where she belongs.

But let a woman take some time
To do what she thinks is divine,
And she may be left behind With lonely memories of what was so fine!

Still, there is a truth to believe....
"Unless the Lord builds the house It's built in vain" *King James Holy Bible
So let's plead the blood of Jesus, follow Him,
And praise His wonderful name!

Although this song speaks of parting, it also, reveals a sincerity and generosity this man has for the ones who he accepts for his friends. Which gives a pleasant tone to this song."Of all the money I did spend, I let it slip gladly to my friends". I like the concern he has for not wanting to have hurt any of the girls he was involved with when he says, '..."of every girl if ever I've touched, I did not do it harmfully, and of every girl, if ever I hurt, I did not do it knowin'ly.". That may make it easier for a girl to forgive if she got hurt and move on, expecting the right one to come along for herself. "Let every woman have her own husband." *King James Bible Then, he explains why, even though he may have liked to stay friends,
he just doesn't have the time it takes to develop friendship to the depth that he wants in a relationship..This can easily be understood if you're an artist who does a lot of traveling and needs time to be without distraction in concentrating on writing, singing, practicing music, etc.
"Of every foe that ever I faced, the cause was there before we came, and every cause if ever I fought, I fought it full without regret or shame." This tells us that the song is about someone who does not look for trouble. However, if it comes he does not run. He stands against it and does what he can to remedy it, and has no regret or shame when he takes a stand. This implies that he makes sure of what he feels he has to do and does it "full" to get the job done. This trait is of good quality, shows excellent character, and courage. I love the following verses..."But the darkness doth die, as the curtain is drawn, and somebody's eyes must meet the dawn." symbolizes that he is fighting for what is right, the truth, justice, etc. (Another revelation of admirable characteristics in this man)
"And if I see the day, I'd only have to stay...so I'll bid farewell in the night and be gone." May mean that if he stays longer with this person, he may see enough good, that his heart will be influenced to have her for his friend, but because of all he has to do, he doesn't even want to know that, "To remain as friends,we need the time to meet demands, and stay behind"....so "I'll bid farewell and be down the line." Glory Cloud Revelation thinks this is a great song except for the last sentence.
