Prayer Lyrics - Disturbed

Review The Song (42)

Another dream that will never come true
Just to compliment your sorrow
Another life that I've taken from you
A gift to add on to your pain and suffering
Another truth you can never believe
Has crippled you completely
All the cries you're beginning to hear
Trapped in your mind, and the sound is deafening

Let me enlighten you
This is the way I pray

[Chorus:]
Living just isn't hard enough
Burn me alive, inside
Living my life's not hard enough
Take everything away
FUCK!

Another nightmare about to come true
Will manifest tomorrow
Another love that I've taken from you
Lost in time, on the edge of suffering
Another taste of the evil I breed
Will level you completely
Bring to life everything that you fear
Live in the dark, and the world is threatening

Let me enlighten you
This is the way i pray

[Chorus]

Return to me, return to me, return to me, turn to me, leave me no one
Turn to me, return to me, return to me, turn to me, cast aside
Return to me, return to me, return to me, turn to me, leave me no one
Turn to me, return to me, return to me, you've made me turn away

[Chorus Variant:]
Living just isn't hard enough
Burn me alive, inside
Living my life's not hard enough,
They take everything from you

[Chorus]

Possible meanings | Reviewer: Tyler Riley | 2/13/11

This song has several meanings that will be different for everyone. i see 3 basics.
1: This is an athiest type of song, mocking how it doesnt matter how he prays or what he says. cuz God cant change a thing.
2: David is being kinda sarcastic. he is complaining about how fate is so unkind to him as everything keeps getting screwed up and bad things always happen around him. Its also kind of mocking.
3: some people actually get addicted to Pain. Hince cutters being one of them. So when his life is good he doesnt know how to react or how to feel after being coldfor so long. so he prays for things to be normal again.

who cares about the meaning we can guess all day and still not know the meaning. when youre trying to guess what it is and arent enjoying the song then you are literally tearing the song apart. who says you have to know the meaning to be a fan? honestly, its stupid. stop arguing about "what the song really means" and just make it about what it means to you and go on with your life.

i see this song as being from the point of view of someone who is losing the people around him, and he's describing what it makes him feel. How he feels that "death and misery" has another thing in store for him tomorrow. Like life isnt hard enough already. I see it this way because a close friend of mine was in a very bad place and he ended his life 2 days ago. So i listen to this song and think:

Living just isn't hard enough
Burn me alive, inside
Living my life's not hard enough
Take everything away

I hear this as him deswcribing "death" and saying this is what death is going to do to me.

Another love that I've taken from you
Lost in time, on the edge of suffering
Another taste of the evil I breed
Will level you completely

This is how death prays. (preys)
thats the great thing about well written songs. They can have broad meanings and reach many people on an important level.

Great song by these guys.

Rest in peace Gary.

Honestly I think Tejay was dead on. The last couple of people who have said this song is basically nihilistic really discouraged me. I've always believed that Disturbed's lyrics carried a positive message about strength in the face of adversity, and for their so-called "fans" to not understand that, it's really just appalling. For those of you who have interpreted Prayer in such a way, I pity your sense of nihilism and recommend you stop listening to Disturbed and listen to a shitty pessimistic band with a persecution complex a mile wide(maybe Mudvayne?) or just kill yourselves, because you clearly don't see any possible meaning in your lives.

lol, people looking for the sense in the song lyrics. Even if I think it useless, I'd like to share with my findings too :). I think this is like a motivation song when you are looking into the face of all difficulties in your life and shout "it's too boring! is it all the life can offer me? I'm not impressed". It makes the difficulties to look like a task to solve, not like the disasters. (I listen the song often without understanding the words, since English not my native language and today just read the lyric and reviews)

BEST SONG FROM DISTURBED! | Reviewer: Jason | 4/14/10

I think this is the best fuckin song from disturbed becuz it was the first one I've ever heared and I have been listening to it ever since. This is probably the best band ever. Anyone who sing and write lyrics this good has got to be one of the best singers in the world. Disturbed is a the kind of band that u would just want to have playing all the time becuz they have writen so many great songs and its hard to pick one as your favorite. I think Disturbed and one of my other favorite bands,Korn are the two greatest bands ever becuz they both talk about thing that we do,have gone through, or would like to in their songs.Keep on rocking and maybe I will get to meet both of the greatest bands PEACE OUT!*****F*****.

the true meaning | Reviewer: Tejay | 4/11/10

What David Draiman was really trying to say was that each person prays in their own way! in the making of the official video note you that when he says "this is the way i pray" the light of the heavens shines upon and he prays for a light to be burned inside of him not as a defiance to god but as if he was asking for gods help! im not completely up to date on the bible like every other christian but Draiman is asking for gods help and god is answering his prayer for the return of everyone that was taken from him! So he isnt really a deviant from god but more less sending a cry for help to help him get through the pain hes going through! Mind you now this can also be proven true becaue David Draiman himself has dealt with the suicide of his beloved girlfriend many years ago! and this i feel represents his true pain and his prayer to god to help make things right and the devil is testing his patience and his faith but he shall prevail!

Book of Job within the Bible. Clarification per the Believe cd itself via the discussion with Draiman himself (in the making of Prayer video). Book of Job is about a man, Job, who followed God his whole life and the devil and God made a bet. The devil believed he could corrupt Job to turning from God. The devil constantly tried and tested Job. Job lost children, was inflicted with disease, famine, and various other assaults. And finally Job questioned God for not intervening. Job questioned why obedient followers were punished/tested for their faith and why God stood idly by and did nothing. God goes nuts on Job for questioning him and then Job falls back into faith and repents. Then God returns his fortunes and gives Job more children. Basically the bet was that no matter what turmoil is inflicted on a true follower, they will always come back to God for help.

However I also agree that the beauty of music is that it means whatever it means to who ever is listening. I just figured I would share exactly what Draiman stated on the "Making of Prayer"

My interperatation | Reviewer: Drake | 2/2/10

This is how I think it is. It's a more defiant song. Perhaps the singer was religious, but something horrible happened to either him or a friend, and maybe he thought something like "What kind of God would make me go through that?" and so turned his back on religion, the chorus is a defiant shout against God, daring him to throw something else at the protagonist. The "return to me" verse is an argumental prayer between the protagonist and God, God saying to return to him, the protagonist saying that he was cast aside and that God made him turn away by making him go through so much. "This is the way I pray" may refer to his new lifestyle, defiant against God.

This is just what I think.
