Point / Counterpoint Lyrics - Streetlight Manifesto

Review The Song (20)

I've got a gun in my hand but that gun won't cock
And my finger's on the trigger but that trigger seems locked
And I can't stop staring at the tick-tock clock
And even if I could I would never give up
With a vest on my chest, a bullet in my lung
I can't believe I'm dying with my song unsung
And if and when I die won't you bury me alone?
Because I'll never get to heaven if I'm singing this song:

If there was something wrong would you be oh so strong?
Would you do what it takes to move this hollow life along?
I'd like to think I would, you know I'd like to think I would
But I guarantee that what you see is not reality
And every time she makes a point I make a counterpoint
She said, "It's easy but in the end you'll have no choice,
And you know that's only just the way it goes."
(You said it right man, that is just the way it goes)

And the days, and the days they seem like forever
And the days, and the days they seem like forever
But forever isn't ever enough

I'd like to sing a song (promise you won't be long)
I'll try not to be long but I don't want to get this story wrong
There was a kid who never cared about the little things
Don't even bother 'cause I'm tired and I'm sick of it
And every time she makes a point I'll make a counterpoint
She said, "It's easy but in the end you'll have no choice,
and you know that's only just the way it goes."
(You said it right man, that is just the way it goes)

I've got a gun in my hand but that gun won't cock
And my finger's on the trigger but that trigger seems locked

With a vest on my chest, a bullet in my lung
I can't believe I'm dying with my song unsung
And if and when I die won't you bury me alone?
Because I'll never get to heaven if I'm singing this song:
Oh, you don't know where I've been
Oh, you don't know what I've seen

If I did something right
Would you give up this fight?
Would you say you were wrong and maybe someone else was kind of right
I'd like to think you would, you know I'd like to think you would
But I can't guarantee that what you get is an apology
Jump back to the day we met I never
Thought that it would end this way if ever
I let you down I want to ask of you
To take it down a notch and we can talk it on through

And the days, and the days they seem like forever
And the days, and the days they seem like forever
But forever isn't ever enough
I'd like to sing a song (promise you won't be long)
I'll try not to be long but i don't want to get this story wrong
there was a chick who never cared about the little things
don't bother 'cause i still don't give a shit
and every time she makes a point i'll make a counterpoint
she said it's easy but in the end you'll have no choice
and you know that's only just the way it goes
(you said it right man, that is just the way it goes)

I've got a gun in my hand but that gun won't cock
And my finger's on the trigger but that trigger seems locked
And I can't stop staring at the tick-tock clock
And even if I could I would never give up
With a vest on my chest, a bullet in my lung
I can't believe I'm dying with my song unsung
And if and when I die won't you bury me alone?
Because I'll never get to heaven if I'm singing this song:
Oh, you don't know where I've been
Oh, you don't know what I've seen

So tell me friend: how's it going to end?
When the shit goes down
And there's no one left around to get your back
You'll crack
You'll smile and agree with everything they say
They'll try to tell you that it's all okay
But it's not and you're shot and you're bleeding pretty bad
And you can't stop thinking about the things you never had
Like a wife and a kid and the things you never did
You're running around
You're living a life that's empty in the end, my friend
No, you'll take back all you've said
Oh, when the regrets fill your head
Trust me I've been there before
I would not wish it upon my greatest enemy
What irony
Once friends, but I find: you'll have to learn this lesson on your own

So I waited by the phone but that phone never rang
And I sang so loud so I wouldn't hear the bang
When the bang never came
And I never got the call: Fuck it! Thank you! I love you all!
Some are going to say that we're doomed to repeat
All our past mistakes
Great
But that's not me
And even if it was I would always disagree
Because in the end I always get the better of me

I've got a gun in my hand but that gun won't cock
And my finger's on the trigger but that trigger seems locked
And I can't stop staring at the tick-tock clock
And even if I could I would never give up
With a vest on my chest, a bullet in my lung
I can't believe I'm dying with my song unsung
And if and when I die won't you bury me alone?
Because I'll never get to heaven if I'm singing this song:
Oh, I'll take you where I've been
Oh, I'll show you what I've seen

The leader singer was once a part of catch 22 but left because he hated the band. he felt he was doing all of the wok and wasn't getting any cedit for it. He "stole" the songs from catch 22 because they were his and he wasn't getting any credit for them

just saying | Reviewer: Grayson | 3/20/10

im not going to pretend to analyze this song, but the lead singer for sure and possibly other members were once apart of catch-22 and some of the songs off this album are directed at the band for stealing his ideas and continuing to play his songs, the lyrics are similar to keasbey nights...but IMO the chorus is a clearly symbolic in that song for the simple reason that the verse seems to tell a bit of a story about possibly his life...but the chorus is not really relevant, at first glance anyways, either way i have my own ideas but as for what the actual meaning is im not sure, but my god are their songs extremely well written

What I can tell you | Reviewer: PaigeMalefiacent | 2/23/10

I can't give you the real meaning for this song, but i can tell you what it means to me. It currently Parallels my life. To me, It means that you need to watch what you say because in the end what really matters is how you feel when you cant change things. and how sometimes you just want to say forget it and end it but for some reason you cant, and you don't know why, all you know is that things suck but some day you know that that will change.

Song meanings | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/24/09

There is never one correct meaning to a song, the meaning comes from how the listener decides to interpret it. And this song is a perfect example, because depending on how you listen to it you could find this song to be depressing or happy, and neither way is "right" being right in this situation is relative to the listener, and anyone who tries to argue one way or another is an arogant a** and needs to be knocked down a few pegs.

All Wrong | Reviewer: Minor | 3/23/09

This song, much like many songs on the "everything went numb" album is about the lead singer, Kalnocky, and his mental similarities to the hero's he's had. Many of Kalnocky's hero's are manically depressed, suicidal, or dead, such as J.D. salinger, Kurt Cobain, and Ernest Hamingway. In the song Here's to Life, Kalnocky goes into detail about all his hero's, the way they've "left the world", and how suicide, his hero's means to an end, is not for him. This song is basically an off shoot of this ideology. when Kalnocky sings:
"I've got a gun in my hand but that gun won't cock
My finger's on the trigger but that trigger seems locked
I can't stop staring at the tick-tock clock
And even if I could I would never give up"
what he's really saying is that he's contemplating suicide, but, as time ticks away, he's slowly relizing he cant give up. Throughout the chorus, he elaborates on this fact, saying "I can't believe I'm dieing with my song unsung", illustrating a belief of one his biggest hero's, Camus, and his absurdist thought that "life ends with just death, there is nothing after it, so live it to the fullest and leave your mark on society in the best way possible". This song is not about a girl; It's about the absurdist beliefs Kalnocky has tried to build his life around and the absurdist philosophies created by some of his favorite authors and heros.

Meaning | Reviewer: Steven | 1/1/09

This song isn't about a guy and his girlfriend, sorry. It's much deeper than that

he's telling you nobody can get you through your bad situation in life. Everytime you say you can't make it through, theres a counterpoint to keep you going. The way i always put it, you cant be mentally tough if you've never had to be, you dont know pain unless you've felt it.

but theres always someone to relate to you, so turn to those who know, and have been through true pain

Keasbey | Reviewer: The Keasbey Diaries | 9/22/08

This song (Point/Counterpoint) is a counterpart to Keasbey Nights, as are a lot of songs on Everything Goes Numb and Keasbey Nights (Album) for example: (Point/Counterpoint)"I've got a gun in my hand but that gun won't cock
My finger's on the trigger but that trigger seems locked
I can't stop staring at the tick-tock clock
And even if I could I would never give up
With a vest on my chest, a bullet in my lung
I can't believe I'm dying with my song unsung
And if and when I die won't you bury me alone?
Because I'll never get to heaven if I'm singing this song" Now compare that to Keasbey Nights: "When they come for me
I'll be sitting at my desk
with a gun in my hand
wearing a bulletproof vest
singing my my my
how the time does fly
when you know you're going to die
by the end of the night" they both talk about a man with a gun and he's wearing a bullet proof vest, also time seems to play a major part. Even the actual songs sound similar, you could sing the Point/Counterpoint chorus during the Keasbey Nights chorus and vice versa, and it would fit.

I think this is the meaning. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/13/08

at some times it sounds like its about him fighting with his girlfriend, it says in the verse where he starts if i did something right. Then it sounds like hes gonna get killed and he trying to decide whether or not to kill himself maybe?

YAY!!!!!!!!!!! | Reviewer: Mariah | 2/17/08

I have just recently gotten into Streetlight Manifesto, but I have to say that they are DEFINITELY one of my faves; all of their songs have good lyrics, and they have their own unique sound that I really appreciate and enjoy. I LOVE STREETLIGHT!

hm | Reviewer: spex | 2/3/08

what do you think this is about? maybe kalnocky was involved in some sort of a shootout or something, who knows... he mentions similiar things in alot of his songs with strewetlight manifesto and catch-22.... does anyone know?
