Passenger Lyrics - Deftones

Review The Song (29)

Here I lay
Still and breathless
Just like always
Still I want some more
Mirrors sideways
Who cares what's behind
Just like always
Still your passenger
Chrome buttons, buckles and leather surfaces
These and other lucky witnesses
Now to calm me
This time won't you please
Drive faster
Roll the windows down
This cool night air is curious
Let the whole world look in
sponsored links
Who cares who sees anything
I'm your passenger
I'm your passenger
Drop these down and
Put them on me
Nice cool seats
There to cushion your knees
Now to calm me
Take me around again
don't pull over
This time would you please drive faster
Roll the windows down
This cool night air is curious
Let the whole world look in
Who cares who sees what tonight
Roll these misty windows down
To catch my breath
And then go and go and don't just
drive me home and back again
Here I lay just like always
Don't let me go
Take me to the edge

it's sex | Reviewer: Sophia | 12/13/13

About 5 years ago I did an essay on this song, and I had this whole idea it was about being high. I was bent on it, that's what i wrote about. It made sense, and it still kind of makes sense. But as I re-review these lyrics, (this was and still is my absolute most favorite song ever- deftones + maynard. Life is complete) it makes more sense to come to the conclusion that this is about sex.

"Chrome buttons, buckles and leather surfaces
These and other lucky witnesses" the only inanimate objects to witness what's going down inside.

"Roll the windows down
This cool night air is curious
Let the whole world look in
Who cares who sees anything"

It's getting hot in the car, let's do what we're doing it doesn't matter who sees us.

"Drop these down and
Put them on me
Nice cool seats
There to cushion your knees"

Drop them panties. Get on your knees. .. I mean clearly someones getting boned in this song. Regardless whether I'm wrong or not, I love it. Love it. Love it. Love it.

Y'all might be looking waaay too far into the meaning of this song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/10/12

"Nice cool seats
There to cushion your knees"

I'm pretty sure this song is about getting laid in a car. Not sure what else you can take from it. Reminds me of all the chics I frogged in cars back in the day.

Regardless, its one of the greatest songs ever written to drive to. Makes me regret selling my blown Mustang.

actually,i do think so people should feel artist's expression of a soul into a song...
and do know that life can trick you,as said in song( this is my favorite song,in this life)...
..maybe we are all PASSENGERS..some of us,in fairy pale song and some of us in dark mysterious game of life...

Its a simple meaning | Reviewer: anon | 10/1/11

This song has a meaning that only people with a "Passanger" understand, every lyric has to do with an unexplainable urge to do something that at a social/logical level, you dont think you should be doing. But the "voice" of whats inside wont let you get away, it wont let you "pull over". It might be very well hiden to those that dont fight with a passanger, but the people that say im wrong and that what im saying makes no sense, then those are the lucky witnesses, that only have to see the outcome.

And yes for this song his passanger is probably drug addiction, but I love that he did not specify that, becuase a passanger can be anything.

Im huge fan of deftones and tool.

Passenger is my favorite track from white pony album.
Maynard and Chino duo = f****** amazing.
Never gt tired listening to this song.

Still hoping they'll make a "Passenger 2".
Booooooooooooooom!

Abba | Reviewer: Cody | 5/26/11

The album this song is on is called "White Pony." The song is about cocaine, every damn song on the album was written while the deftones were high on cocaine, every song on the album is about cocaine or cocaine addiction.

Btw...ima dinosaur | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/10/11

"roll the window down this cool night air iz curios...I'm your passenger..." to me that's the same feeling I get while I'm tripping out...but I highly doubt that this song iz about sex or just getting high. Or even murder. To me it seems like chino (or maynard) iz trapt. Not knowing where to go he has Maynard (or chino) "drive" him anywhere. So in essence (I kno that word sounds weird XD) he's trapt by the world, or buried emotions, or whatever. "take me to the edge" he's curious about what the world iz like because he can't see it the way others do. Mayb the reason it sounds sexual or like someone iz getting high or committing a murder iz because those are just some of the vessels people who are lost utilize to try to open up. I'll close my comment with this, open ur minds and try to see past the visual. X) I don't mean to sound a philosophical or whatever...just trying to help! If anyone sees sumthin wrong with my comment don't hesitate to reply! (just don't be a dick!) -dino

Nope | Reviewer: olivia | 4/23/11

Some of you were close...I've actually seen an interview with Deftones from years ago, if anyone knew about their past histories you'd know exactly what they're talking about..but it's not sex, or murder, it's about the high you get after doing an 8 ball of cocaine..being the "passenger". If you've done drugs you know exactly what this feels like..and if you haven't, then now you know!

I know... | Reviewer: Aaron Polk | 4/2/11

everyone always gets mad when people take it to drugs... but "White Pony" is a slang term for cocaine. This song sounds an awful lot like how an addiction "drives" you. disguised as a sexual song.

lets not forget how often Maynard does this its not always sexual, or drugs but think of the Tool song "stinkfist"

Love Song | Reviewer: Neal | 12/3/10

This song was my love song to my 1986 Camaro! ~my first car~ She was totally redone from top to bottom and got her for a steal of a deal! The windows were completely blacked out so at night light didnt come through except the windshield. With the glow of blue neon from the cd player I would cruise the back roads of Georgia and play this song over and over!

It's all about SEX! | Reviewer: flammaefata | 8/26/10

Very strange that it seems none of the reviewers posting here has picked this up?! This is a complete and utter sexual song about two people having sex on the backseat of a car (in my mind a limousine) while someone else is (hopefully) driving. Here is my interpretation, and therefore all in my own humble opinion, although I'm sure you'll see it when you listen to the song in this light. Oh and I'm heterosexual so I envision this as sex between a guy and a girl, but I'm sure it can work for other combinations too - it's two male voices after all ;)

"Chrome buttons, buckles and leather surfaces
These and other lucky witnesses"
- Refers to who or what might see them having sex.

"This time won't you please
Drive faster"
- The sense of excitement physical speed gives you while having sex. Perhaps also a reference to how fast their partner should go...

"Roll the windows down
This cool night air is curious
Let the whole world look in
Who cares who sees anything"
- Again gives you a sense that someone (or something - curious night air) can see in, and the exhiliration you feel when you know someone might catch you "in the act". Followed up and strengthened in the next chorus.

"Drop these down and
Put them on me
Nice cool seats
There to cushion your knees
Now to calm me
Take me around again
Just don't pull over
This time would you please drive faster"
- Describes the guy dropping his pants and getting in position "nice cool seats there to cushion your knees". Begs him to give her another go, or orgasm (if you will) - "take me around again"...

"Roll the windows down
This cool night air is curious
Let the whole world look in
Who cares who sees what tonight
Roll these misty windows down
To catch my breath
And then go and go and go just drive me
Home and back again"
- The sexual act is even more strongly referred to "who cares who sees WHAT tonight" and "roll these MISTY windows down to catch my breath". This is what nails (excuse the pun) the sexual meaning of this song - the windows have misted up during their passion and now she needs to catch her breath. "And then go and go and go just drive me" suggesting his rhythm as he thrusts.

And the intro and outtro of the song wraps it all up:
"Here I lay
Still and breathless
Just like always
Still I want some more"
"Here I lay just like always
Don't let me go
Take me to the edge"
- Describes her lying on the back seat, waiting in anticipation and desire, wanting to do it again, wanting him to take her to climax (the edge).

So do you see now? It's a very sexual song...

murder? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/25/10

I'm wondering where the description of a murder is in this song. For me he just describes, in a very catching and deep way, the feeling of being on the road, "enjoying the time and curious air" it has to offer, right next to the person you love.
This is a kind of a trip, being on the road of sensations....as passenger. feelings bringing you somewhere

Genius | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/15/10

This song....where to start.... I am a huge fan of Maynard in general because he's a damn genius and a fan of Deftones as well. This song blows my mind. Their voices are completely in sync, Chino having the more husky, throaty sound to his and the perfect soothing melody of Maynards bring this song together in an unexplainable way. The lyrics are amazing as well. Seems to me to be the story of a highly sexual fueled murder. This is one of those songs that just makes me sit and think about how geniusly put together the song is. Not only do I love this song, but am in love with it. Perfect. And I must thank Mike for the introduction

What it's about... | Reviewer: bree loves maynard | 10/21/09

This is one of my several all-time favorites. As everyone agrees, the vocals are outstanding! The whole album though, (White Pony) is really one story. Listen from start to finish. You'll see. This particular song is near the end, and he has picked up a hitcher. The sexual overtones are heavy, so it's a good bet that was part of the motivation. I think he kills his "passenger" Thus "Change in the House of Flies" the next song. The whole album is describing various murders, maybe only in his head, but doesn't sound like it. Check it out.

Not bad at all | Reviewer: Shawn | 9/1/09

Always been a tool fan, deftones have grown on me in the past year, but this duo with chino and maynard... amazing. It's got the same soothing sounds or tool's Parabola. Nothing else to say than it rocks.
