Paper Wings Lyrics - Rise Against

Review The Song (51)

One last thing I beg you please just before you go
I've watched you fly on paper wings halfway around the world
Until they burned up in the atmosphere and sent you spiraling down
Landing somewhere far from here with no one else around
To catch you falling down
And I'm looking at you now

And I can't tell if you're laughing
Between each smile there's a tear in your eye
There's a train leaving town in an hour
It's not waiting for you, and neither am I

"Swing for the fences, son" he must have told you once
But that was a conversation you took nothing from
So raise your glass now, lets celebrate exactly what you've done
Just put off another day of knowing where you're from
You can catch up with yourself if you run...

And I can't tell if you're laughing

It's not waiting for you, and neither am I

Is this the life that you lead,
Or the life that's lead for you?
Will you take the road that's been laid out before you?
Will we cross paths somewhere else tonight?
Somewhere else tonight...

And I can't tell if you're laughing
Between each smile there's a tear in your eye
There's a train leaving town in an hour
It's not waiting for you, and neither am I

for me, this songs meaning is about decisions that one has made and it may not have been the best, "i cant tell if you're laughing, between each smile there's a tear in your eyes" wants to say that one isn't really happy about hat he did.
coming to the story: i think there are two storys in this Song, the first tells of someone who was convinced he could achieve something, but failed, because he overstimated himself. thant's pretty much like the myth of icarus and daedalus, as the person below me already said. maybe with the phrase "with no ine else around, to catch you falling down" he even says that that person turned away from his friends.
the second story is about someone with no self-assurence. "swing for the fences son" has his origins in baseball and wants to say "try achieving the impossible" but the person didnt hear on the one who saif it, and "raise your glass now, lets celebrate" means that it isnt nexesserily a bad thing, but here too, the person seems not to be to lucky with his decission.
in the third strophe, the questions want to ask if you lead the life and you can change it, or if the life leads you and you have no influrences, pretty much like destiny.
at the end, Tim alsks if "we cross patch somewhere else tonight", probably, he asks if he and someone will meet in life again, i would guess he means a girl, who he was in love with, but it didnt work out, i guess she broke up, why he still wants to "cross path". she doesnt necesserily had to break up and it just didnt work out, but the lines "i cant tell if your laughing " and the followring one could mean that she did but isn't quite sure if it was right.
well taht's my interpretation, i really love to make somes, ecpessialy of my favourit band, sadly english isnt my main language so please forgive me for mistakes or if it's bad written.
i'd really love to hear what you guys think about my interpretation

Allusion in Paper Wings | Reviewer: Tim | 12/3/11

I have been contemplating the meaning and moral of this song for quite some time now, but so far I have had little success. I do, however, know that the lines in the chorus about "paper wings" that "burned up in the atmosphere and sent you spiraling down" are an allusion to the Greek myth "Icarus." Icarus' father, Daedalus, attached wax wings to Icarus so that he could fly, but warned him not too fly too high. Icarus either forgot or ignored his father's advice, and flew high enough for the sun to melt the wax wings and "send him spiraling down." To me, this allusion represents the foolishness of young people, and their constant desire for the things they can't have (I myself am a teenager, so I can speak for the truthfulness of this statement).

Meaning? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/2/11

I think that this song is about a friend who lost touch with who he knew and where he came from to try to live a big life or follow a lover. When everything came crashing down on the friend they had nothing left because of everything they abandoned. Nothing fancy, just a way of saying,"you forgot about me and threw me under the bus in an attempt to be happy, but I thought I meant more than that."

re: Song meaning, if you dont know, he often dont have anything that he makes it about, it just comes out | Reviewer: Simon | 1/4/11

, if you dont know, he often dont have anything that he makes it about, it just comes out. watch another station another mile, where tim for example tells that he built the entire song savior arond the frase "i dont hate you" cause he said it everytime, in the beginning he only sings gibberish to get to know the song, obviosly he could have had a meaning, and the songs are meaningful but he didnt always plan it.

LOVE RISE AGAINST, cant wait til march, live in stockholm :D

Song Meaning | Reviewer: Shazzy Zang | 8/16/10

I think this song is about someone who made a choice to follow fame(or something else), instead of what he was 'destined to do', or what he enjoyed. It seemed to be a good choice, it seemed to be working
'I watched you fly on paper wings, half way around the world'

Then things changed, the person's life became a wreck because they weren't living life for the right reasons.
'Until they burned up in the atmosphere and sent you spiraling down'

On their search for fame they probably did whatever they could to further their goals of fame, excluding people from their lives.
'Landing somewhere far from here with no one else around'

Their is one last person, about to give up on them. They have watched their success and failures, and is now trying to help them one last time.
'And I'm looking at you now'
'There's a train leaving town in an hour
It's not waiting for you, and neither am I'

The next verse is that friend saying 'look at what you've done, are you happy now?'. The friend tells him that he still has time to fix his life, but times running out.
'So raise your glass now, lets celebrate exactly what you've done
Just put off another day of knowing where you're from
You can catch up with yourself if you run...'

The last part is him talking to his 'real' self. Asking him if he's doing this for him, or for someone else, or the world in general. Then asks him if he will continue you on this road that is not his destiny, or if he will meet up with the 'real him' somewhere before time runs out.
'Is this the life that you lead,
Or the life that's lead for you?
Will you take the road that's been laid out before you?
Will we cross paths somewhere else tonight? '

Of course, that's just my thoughts. It seems to mostly fit, though. Anyways, good music has multiple interpretations, this just happens to be mine.

drums | Reviewer: jakblah | 6/25/10

anyone who says the drummer isnt good is ignorant. in a song you play the drums to keep a beat NOT to show off your talent. True the drums are very complex in this song but that DOSNT make him a bad drummer! To be in a band this famous im sure hes a god dam good drummer. He played a simple beat to keep the song in rythem, whitch work very well because alot of people like this song. dont say hes bad, you just look dumb.

personally i think this is about some one who once had every thing and lost it all and found them self lonely and a friend or person is trying to help them back to their feet.(iv watched you fly on paper wings until they burned up in the atmosphere sent you spiraling down) the person was living on false highs or had many material possessions and lost them all.

drugs | Reviewer: rodrigo zanette | 5/11/10

First Verse Meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/4/10

"i watched you fly on paper wings" is what i imagine to be treading a dangerous path. it went on for a while, "halfway around the world" i assume it got worse until it "sent you spiraling down." maybe that will help

I see Paper Wings about someone who has made some bad decisions in their life.

"I've watched you fly on paper wings half way round the world
until they burned up in the atmosphere and sent you spiraling down
Landing somewhere far from here with no one else around
To catch you falling down
And I'm looking at you now"

Here he is talking about someone he used to be friends with, who then made some bad decisions, and the decisions "sent him spiraling down" and he landed himself somewhere where no one wanted to help him.

"Is this the life that you lead?
Or the life that's led for you?
Will you take the road thats been laid out before you?"

Here he is saying "Is this what you want to do or what the people around you want you to do?"

"Just put off another day of knowing where you're from
You can catch up with yourself
if you run"

Here he is saying "You can get back to the life you had, before your wrong decisions if you try".

"And I can't tell if you're laughing
Between each smile there's a tear in your eye
There's a train leaving town in an hour
It's not waiting for you and neither am I"

In the chorus he's asking if this is making you happy, or is it making you sad? Is this fun? The right thing to do? Or does it sadden you? The train leaving town is his other life. He could pursue it, but no one's waiting for him to do so.

answeri for the comment"drums" | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/25/09

Well, I´m a drummer too. And I can tell you: The drummer isnt as good as its seems to you. I´m playing the drums now for approxamtaley 2 years and i can play all of the songs written by RA (I know someone else can play the earlier as i do, I know im not a good drummer blah blah ). so the drummer isnt bad is he. But he isnt the best. hes playing the same patterns alot.

Btw I love this song :)

I think this song is advice to someone (Dont know who) that they have been preparing and planing there life and trying to live up to there standards but hes watched them and they have just crashed and burned. So his advice is listen to what you were told before and just skip the fences and go off the road you have chose otherwise you are just going to end up regreting youre life. So he asks, are you going to follow everyone else and stay on the road if not then theres the train so get on it as soon as you can before its too late beacuse im not wateing.

Different Meaning | Reviewer: BJ | 10/23/09

It seems a lot of people see "Paper Wings" as a song about a girl that's leaving, or something to that effect. I see it as a song talking about how someones life somewhere along the way took a turn that maybe they hadn't intended on taking.

One last thing I beg you please, just before you go (Talking to himself)
I've watched you fly on paper wings half way round the world (Living a life that wasn’t mean for him)
until they burned up in the atmosphere and sent you spiraling down (He realized that this wasn’t sustainable)
Landing somewhere far from here with no one else around
To catch you falling down (Now he’s far from who he was with nothing to fall back on)
And I'm looking at you now (Inner self talking to him)

And I can't tell if you're laughing (Is the happiness he’s showing a front)
Between each smile there's a tear in your eye (Although he seems happy, his inner self knows he’s hurting inside)
There's a train leaving town in an hour (The life he should be living is about to be unattainable)
It's not waiting for you and neither am I (The drive to pursue(inner self) his dream when it leaves will no longer be there)

Swing for the fences son, he must have told you once
That was a conversation you took nothing from (He did not pursue his dreams)
SO RAISE YOUR GLASS *now* AND celebrate exactly what you've done (Celebrate the “Success” you’ve had)
Just put off another day of knowing where you're from (Ignoring who he is inside)
You can catch up with yourself
if you run (He has to do a lot to get back to his true self)

Is this the life that you lead? (Did you choose this)
Or the life that's led for you? (Or the life that was predetermined that you didn’t have to strive for)
Will you take the road thats been laid out before you? (Will you take the easy way out?)
Will we cross paths somewhere else tonight? (Inner self to self)
