Otherside Lyrics - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Review The Song (35)

How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don't,
I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat
It's all I ever

I heard your voice through a photograph
I thought it up it brought up the past
Once you know you can never go back
I've got to take it on the otherside

Centuries are what it meant to me
A cemetery where I marry the sea
Stranger things could never change my mind
I've got to take it on the otherside
Take it on the otherside
Take it on
Take it on

How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don't,
I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat
It's all I ever

Pour my life into a paper cup
The ashtray's full and I'm spillin' my guts
She wants to know am I still a slut
I've got to take it on the otherside

Scarlet starlet and she's in my bed
A candidate for my soul mate bled
I push the trigger and I pull the thread
I've got to take it on the otherside
Take it on the otherside
Take it on
Take it on

How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don't,
I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat
It's all I ever

Turn me on take me for a hard ride
Burn me out leave me on the otherside
I yell and tell it that
It's not my friend
I tear it down I tear it down
And then it's born again

How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don't,
I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat
It's all I ever

I don't,
I don't believe it's bad
Slit' my throat
It's all I ever

I have had this song stuck in my head for years. It is there every time I am falling asleep and when I wake up. I am sure it is the melody rather than the lyrics, as I wasn't sure what they all were until I just looked them up - I figure if it's in my head I may as well have them correct. I hesitated to all this time thinking it may make it worse, but it actually helps push out other thoughts when I try to sleep, so maybe not a bad thing after all.

So..he wanted to write a song about his drug addiction and the best he could come up with was "How long will I slide, separate my side. I don't believe it's bad, slit my throat......" Real poetic there Anthony, did you think of those all by yourself? Did it take over ten minutes? Lord I hope not.

If you've read Anthony Kiedis' autobiography you'd know this song is about his relationship with a girl named Claire and their difficult relationship and his struggle with drugs.
"How long, how long will I slide, separate my side, I don't, I don't believe it's bad, slitting my throat is all I ever had" is what he says was his way of saying he didn't think his drug addiction was that bad. His book is a really good read and it makes you realize how much meaning his lyric have.

In my opinion, the song is about passing away. Or at least the wish of leave this side then born again. Altough, he doesn't think it's something bad to die because the person he loves has died.
Once you know you can never go back ( as she's dead)
I've got to take it on the otherside (he wants to be with her).

imo | Reviewer: Kaifer | 5/8/11

I think it's a break up aftermath...when he and she are trying to not loose the contact, to keep touch but he cant do this, he's suffering. "How long, how long will I slide" so how many problems will he occur to "separate" himself from her, but "He doesnt belive in its bad" .. just need to get over and thats the hardest part.

Good song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/28/10

I think this song is about reviewing one's life and realizing how it sucks. How he "can never go back" and "it's all I ever..." What I like about the chilli peppers is that their lyrics are so debatable. I hate the drones who listen like Hannah Montana and stuff. No perception.

What happened to just enjoying music... Everyone get something different out of Lyrics. No one's right or wrong it's your personal views & opinions, & also your own personal experiences'. That's why I think people should stop being so analytical and enjoy the music :)

scientific perspective | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/23/09

the song is about reconciling time and space...some people have spatial brains and others have temporal brains and it's about the loneliness felt when you try to reconcile your experience of life with someone who has a different experience of life altogether. it's sort of like he's there and then he's lost - once you know you can never go back is like the impossibility of travelling back in time, and pour my life into a paper cup is like trying to take his whole life which is mapped out on his mind and condencsing into something that can be grasped by someone else...but it only makes him feel fragmented and incomplete. trust.

i agree with you i hate mainstream music. i cant stand to hear about it or anything. i am in a band and love this song. i can play the whole song myself all at one time minus the drums but i play them all on bass.

song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/22/09

i think its about a drug addiction and how its hurting his lover as well as himself, i can relate to this song =( i did weed and my girlfriend pretended to be ok with it but it was tearing her up inside and we slowly drifted apart, god i miss her so much

idiots | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/15/09

um just listen to the song rather than blirt out shit about what their songs could possibly of meant. Anywayz this song is my fav RHCP song. Also who here hates mainstream music today i mean chris brown would be better off screwin a chicken rather than singing same with britney spears and miley cirus i mean po hip hop and rap suck. Its bands like RHCP and Nirvana who actually had the sense to make good music but tell me if you do hate mainstream music cuz i really hate it and im sick of people talkin about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think this song is about a loss of a loved one and unresolved issues or words unspoken...i think he wants to commit suicide to be reunited...centuries is what it meant to me...i heard your voice through a photograph...then he is trying to move on by sleeping with girls that dont measure up ...the scarlet reference is sybolism to the devil meaning that these girls are wrong or the act of sex without her is wrong

Love this song :) | Reviewer: Angela | 12/17/08

Just my opinion.. my response to the 12/9 post - I think that the cemetary/sea thing when I had originally heard it meant a burial @ sea.
Pour my life into a paper cup - if he were ashes..
Just a different point of view I guess. Yours does make more sense though. I work in a hospital and have lost so many patients lately so death is on the brain I guess.

I think this song is about drug use and how he is basically killing himself through using the drugs..as in he is slowly commiting suicide by using these drugs and he is "sliding" by death.
"I don't believe it's bad
Slittin' my throat
it's all I ever..." clearly means to me how he is trying to stay in denial, but knows it is killing him using drugs and then when he says, "it's all i ever..." he is trying to make up an excuse for using it.
"Centuries are what it meant to me
A cemetery where I marry the sea
Stranger things could never change my mind"
the century reference shows how the drugs have been what his life has meant to him...
and the cemetary where he marries the sea probably means the sea being his blood/veins and the cemetary meaning death...and how when he injects drugs (cemetary + sea)
And he says that stranger things can't change his mind because he is so addicted and the sea (his veins/life) feels stuck to the drugs...like he can't get away.
"Pour my life into a paper cup
The ashtray's full and I'm spillin' my guts
She wants to know am I still a slut"
and the paper cup...not sure what that means per say, but I am assuming that he means that a paper cup is easy to break/leak and his life can just fall out and disappear.
The ashtray resembles how he is using so much drugs (through smoking them i assume) that he has used as much drugs as his body can take...and he knows he's going to die. I think it also shows how he needs more and more of the drugs.
And him being a slut, obviously means fooling around with drugs and being dirty/trashy etc.
"A scarlet starlet and she's in my bed
A candidate for my soul mate bled
I push the trigger and I pull the thread"
I think the scarlet starlet is a reference to the strawberry meth or to a girl...and the bleeding is the pink color bleeding into his veins or something or it is a refrence to how he is hurting the girl he loves...and maybe she is the girl in the photograph
"Turn me on, take me for a hard ride
Burn me out, leave me on the otherside
I yell and tell it that It's not my friend
I tear it down, I tear it down
And then it's born again"
i think this means that he loves drugs until it he overdoses and dies.
and obviously he is trying to stop using them...and he keeps trying to stop, but can't.
:/that's my opinion because most of these songs seem to be about drugs...
drugs are bad...esp. when there are popular songs like this...it says something!

Meaning | Reviewer: Zach | 2/26/08

I really dont know what the song truely means i can only guess on what Anthony is trying to say in this song but i am pretty sure its about his cocaine and heroin addiction... he talks about in his book he had a book about drugs and it had pictures and went in to detail about them and as soon as he started to read it he had the sudden craving of going down town to get drugs and i think in this part of the song ..."I heard your voice through a photograph
I thought it up it brought up the past" thats what he means and than "push the triger and pull the thread" obviously means a syringe and "Turn me on take me for a hard ride
Burn me out leave me on the otherside
I yell and tell it that
It’s not my friend
I tear it down I tear it down
And then it’s born again" its just talkin about how he struggles through it and how it tears it down but its born again because he keeps having these chronic relaspes
