Opiates (heroin, Vicodens, Codeine, Oxycodone, etc) all give the user a feeling of well being, an elevated mood, a relaxed "in the womb" type feeling. Hence the song title, "I'm on a plain". The people that are saying Cobain used heroin to "just get high" are seriously misinformed. He was self medicating his mood swings.
