Not A Job Lyrics - Elbow

Review The Song (3)

Pull the final splinters
Of missing picture winters
You have to give yourself a break
What's the fascination
With lovers at the station
You have to tear yourself away

The dream again nobody understands
Walking through the long grass on your hands
It's not a job to do today
Sleep it off

Words to make her stay: you said
Leave me and the plants die
A panic smile across your face
Corrugated browline
The hissing bitter punchline
Call when you can tie your lace

You rule my world my brother
You rule my world compadre

The dream again nobody understands
Walking through the long grass on your hands
It's not a job to do today
Sleep it off

Nod to Gabriel? | Reviewer: Joel | 4/9/10

This Elbow song is very unlike their other music. The first time I heard it, I thought it was Peter Gabriel. The arrangement, the instrumentation and vocals, although more sloppy, REALLY sound like Peter. The lyrics are virtually nonsensicle but you can't understand him anyway. If you like modern Gabriel, check this song out.

WTF? | Reviewer: Lazza | 2/28/10

Utter bilge. WTF are they going on about? I'm sure only the writer could know that. As for the other review on here: As full of s**t as the song itself. Don't pretend you know what it means. Typical droning, obscure Elbow. Sounds the same as every other song of theirs I've endured.

Innocence and pain | Reviewer: Yke | 2/11/05

What I like about this song is the childish optimistic sound of it, together with the old pain of the "bitter punch lines". It's all about not becoming a cynic or even about releasing one self from it. Things keep a "breeze", nothing's getting solid. There is always that spark of hope, openness toward things to come. "Walking through the long grass on your hands" It's "simply" brilliant, like many of the Elbow lyrics.

My favourite is still Scattered Black And Whites.
