No Dark Things Lyrics - Echo & The Bunnymen

Review The Song (1)

My life picks
My hands clean
No head shaved
It's quite safe
Compromise discovery
It's just and it's only

I took the pill
All you mis-
Construed all
The tactics

You must learn
To distinguish error from your fate
They don't think it's funny
That he's beginning to accept the facts

To the middle of the floor
You walked over
sponsored links
In the middle of the wall
The picture still hanging
From the corner of my eye
You stick pins in
In the middle of the floor
I fell over

We have no dark things
Nothing to hide of that
Just some heads and a wish
Something to sing about
We have no dark things
Nothing to hide of that
Just some heads and a wish
Something to shout about
We have no dark things
Nothing to hide of that
Just some heads and a wish
Something to sing about

No dark things
No dark things
No dark things
No dark things
No dark things
No dark things
No dark things
No dark things

More Dark Things | Reviewer: Richard Scott Tweed | 12/15/2006

When 'Heaven Up Here' was released in 1981, bands like Echo & the Psychedelic Furs tended to get lumped together as part of a 'wave.' This was more a function of lazy writing than a real kinship. PF were a great band, but Echo staked a claim to a piece of musical landscape that was uniquely their own. 'Heaven' received some negative reviews, something along the lines of "well, the despair thing was cool on 'Crocodiles,' but this goes too far." Well, wasn't the whole point to 'go too far'? Where else is/was there to go? The hypnotic beat and the combination of arpegios & slashing, pure feeling guitar (used to good effect by another great band, Gang of Four)of 'Dark' are the perfect setting for the lyrics, which seem to me to be sticking a tongue out at Death & Life all at once. That's what Echo did best...because the audience is always left uncertain as to whether Ian is singing and means every word, or having an ironic goof on life itself. He seems to say 'OK - life in and of itself is a losing proposition, since by Western standards death cannot be overcome. So what? Here I come, motherfuckers.'

'You must learn
To disding-
Guish error
From your fate...'

'No Dark Things' - really? The whole THING is a black/dark comedy...and that's what Echo and the Bunnymen are all about. Listening to this song is like watching someone's brakes fail on a steep hill, or fsomeone else fall through a hole in the ice...

'They don't think it's funny
That he's beginning to accept the facts...'

...and laughing despite yourself. Not out of cruelty, or lack of compassion...but out of recognition -

Next time it will be me...
