My Old Friend Lyrics - Tim McGraw
Review The Song (29)
My old friend, I recall
The times we had hanging on my wall
I wouldn't trade them for gold
Cause they laugh and they cry me
Somehow sanctify me
They're woven in the stories I have told
And tell again
My old friend, I apologize
For the years that have passed
Since the last time you and I
Dusted off those memories
But the running and the races
The people and the places
There's always somewhere else I had to be
Time gets thin, my old friend
Don't know why, don't know why
Don't know why, don't know why
My old friend, this song's for you
Cause a few simple verses
Was the least that I could do
To tell the world that you were here
Cause the love and the laughter
Will live on long after
All of the sadness and the tears
We'll meet again, my old friend
My old friend, my old friend

This song reminds me of my friend who passed away just three weeks ago only at the age of 13 :( I makes me cry everytime I listen to it. I still love the song though, it's very beautiful.
great song. | Reviewer: B | 5/7/11
I had a friend who recently passed away at 16. This song reminds me of her. It's exactly how I feel. Good thing the love and the laughter will live on long after all of the sadness and the tears. This is a beautiful song
This song hits home. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/19/11
This song really hits home for me. I've always liked this song so much. It has always been one of the greatest songs that I personally thought was written. On Dec 15, 2010, I lost my 21 yr old Best Friend in a car accident in our hometowm of Odessa, TX. It means alot to me now because I think about him when i play this song. I miss him and I'll always hold this song close to my heart. Miss ya Byron Monahan.
For those that this song has real meaning.... | Reviewer: dcffa2006 | 6/9/10
(with the exception of the two posters who have lost their wife and father respectively)
It is hard to grasp the true meaning of this song unless you have lost someont very close to you...
4 years ago last month, one of my best friends died due to a rodeo accident. A horse rolled over on him and crushed his heart. He is truely my old friend and every year on the anniversary of his death this song mysteriously plays on my radio, reguardless of the station. I sincerely apologize for the years that have passed since the last time that he and I have dusted off those memories...
We'll meet again, my old friend....

I absolutely love this song! Every time I hear it, it brings tears to my eyes! My best friend passed away a few months ago at the age of 24. His death was accidental, and every day he crosses my mind and I think about him constantly! I loved him and always watched out for him and we were always there for each other through everything! We were like "partners in crime." And I miss him dearly, and we'll find each other again by the grace of God. "Cause the love and the laughter will live on long after All the sadness and the tears, We'll meet again..."

I also had a horse that passed away quite recently. And since I was such a nerdy kid in school, my mare was my only childhood friend. She was the first horse I ever touched and rode. When I was little, I'd groom her and tell her about my day, lol. This song brings me to tears everytime I listen to it.

It reminds me of a long lost love. We recently patched up closure from several years ago. We both have different lives and are both married with children and live in different states. He was my first love which makes him my old friend and we will meet up someday with good lord.
LOVE this song!!!! | Reviewer: Erin | 9/29/09
This is one of Tim's best for sure! it gives me chills every time i hear it. It just makes me think of my childhood and all my friendships of the past. Helps me realize how important life is. Thank you Tim for your excellent music!!
some love and respect for Wiseman | Reviewer: brady | 2/19/09
Not enough credit is given to the genius behind this song, Craig Wiseman. I think if McGraw had written this he would have been credited as a writer as well. True McGraw could have pitched an idea that lead to this song, but it was Wiseman who crafted these lyrics. As for meaning only the writers and perhaps artist would know for sure...but until proven otherwise I think the song is saying goodbye but not nessicarly a person or living thing.

Does it really matter who the song was written about? We have, all of us, had friends that were near and dear to our hearts ...Someone who passed away before we had a chance to tell them how we really felt.
There is someone in your life today, this very moment, who needs that from you. Make it a point to call them and let them know they are loved...respected. Don't wait until the Memorial service, or the funeral. Tell them NOW.
My wife died and this was the only song that I even considered for her funeral | Reviewer: Randy Harvey | 4/15/08
She committed suicide. When everyone was telling me how bad they felt. This song was in my head. No one understands the pain you go threw. The part in the song that says "It's the least that I could do - to tell the world you were here", just really resonated with how I felt about her. Thank you Tim McGraw for this song. It will always have a place in my heart.
