Murder By Numbers Lyrics - Sting & Police

Review The Song (2)

Written by Sting & Andy Summers

Once that you've decided on a killing
First you make a stone of your heart
And if you find that your hands are still willing
Then you can turn a murder into art

There really isn't any need for bloodshed
You just do it with a little more finesse
If you can slip a tablet into someone's coffee
Then it avoids an awful lot of mess

It's murder by numbers, one, two, three
It's as easy to learn as your ABC
Murder by numbers, one, two, three
It's as easy to learn as your ABC

Now if you have a taste for this experience
And you're flushed with your very first success
Then you must try a twosome or a threesome
And you'll find your conscience bothers you much less

Because murder is like anything you take to
It's a habit-forming need for more and more
You can bump off every member of your family
And anybody else you find a bore

Because it's murder by numbers, one, two, three
It's as easy to learn as your ABC
Murder by numbers, one, two, three
It's as easy to learn as your ABC

Now you can join the ranks of the illustrious
In history's great dark hall of fame
All our greatest killers were industrious
At least the ones that we all know by name

But you can reach the top of your profession
If you become the leader of the land
For murder is the sport of the elected
And you don't need to lift a finger of your hand

Because it's murder by numbers, one, two, three
It's as easy to learn as your ABC
Murder by numbers, one, two, three
It's as easy to learn as your ABC-TV

Same as what Derek said. The Police take a song with a VERY edgy and controvesial point of view and turn it into a very catchy and intriguing tune. There was a clip with this song featured in the film "Copycat" back in 1995 by the way...K

The Overlooked Police Hit | Reviewer: Derek | 8/15/2007

There are so many great Police songs which get plenty of notoriety.

Some examples are Roxanne, Every Breath You Take, Message In A Bottle, Synchronicity, Walking on The Moon, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Don't Stand So Close To Me and King of Pain.

Of course being that The Police are an oustanding group that just got back together after 20 years apart and didn't miss a beat at a recent soldout MSG show I attended, those popular songs are very worthy of the accolades they have received.

To be perfectly honest, I can't think of too many Police songs I particularly didn't care for which is a credit to the genius of the terrific trio of Sting, Copeland and Summers when they got together and made their music which ranks up there in my book.

Some songs such as The Bed's Too Big Without You, Can't Stand Losing You, Do Do Do Da Da Da and of course Murder By Numbers might be a little overlooked compared to those great hits.

Though if you asked diehard Police fans like myself, they'd probably beg to differ because of how outstanding each really is.

When it comes to Murder by Numbers, I can't help but hear in my head, "1-2-3, It's as easy to learn as your A, B C."

For a messed up sort of topic, the way it's written and performed is absolutely flawless.

The great artists/bands have a way of making almost every lyric and sound that comes with it perfect.

Just read a couple of verses and then hear how it's delivered and you'll indeed be hooked.

The first part definitely grabs ya. The thing I like is that it's not really complex but simplistic. I bet almost anyone could write similar words. But can they deliver them with as much meaning and hear it in their collective minds?

Hard to say. Myself, I love writing poetry/lyrics. So I can definitely appreciate this work and what was put into it.

I have to admit to being disappointed the band didn't play this song a couple of weeks ago. But then again, that just tells you about the greatness of this band because they played 18 songs and every one was outstanding and had the crowd totally into.

But also, maybe that's why I feel this song has been overlooked. Because it wasn't even played at the one Police show I got to see. I know I will try to get out to another when they return to NYC in November.

Maybe I'll get my wish. But for now, I'm sticking with my theory.
