Mr. Bojangles Lyrics - Bob Dylan

Review The Song (5)

I knew a man Bojangles and he'd dance for you in worn out shoes
Silver hair, ragged shirt and baggy pants, that old soft shoe
He'd jump so high, he'd jump so high, then he lightly touched down
Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles, dance.

I met him in a cell in New Orleans, I was down and out
He looked to me to be the eyes of age as he spoke right out
He talked of life, he talked of life, laughing slapped his leg stale
Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles, dance.

He said the name Bojangles and he danced a lick all across the cell
He grabbed his pants for a better stance, oh he jumped so high and he clicked
up his heels
He let go laugh, he let go laugh, shook back his clothes all around
Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles, dance, yeah, dance.

He danced for those at minstrel shows and county fairs throughtout the south
He spoke with tears of 15 years of how his dog and him but just travelled all about
His dog up and died, he up and died, and after 20 years he still grieves
Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles, dance.

He said I dance now at every chance at honky-tonks for drinks and tips
But most of the time I spend behind these county bars, cause I drink so bit
He shook his head, yes he shook his head, I heard someone ask him, please,
Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles, dance, dance, Mr Bojangles, dance.

Bob Dylan did not write this song, although he did record a version. (The most popular version was recorded by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.) The song was written by Jerry Jeff Walker.

The Greatest American song from The Greatest American Songwriter | Reviewer: Andrew Bush | 10/18/11

Mr. Bojangles is a epic song that will inspire musicians from all walks of life. It's a very melodic Ballad that is a treasure to anyone who is listening or perhaps performing this Master Work. Bob Dylan saw into the souls of the people or things he wrote songs about; thus giving the listener a plethora of melodic imagery to place themselves inside to watch the story unfold. Needless to say a great song by a great songwriter.AEB

Mr. Bojangles was one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar, and I beleive my favorite to play! Me and my neighbor used to play together every Sunday morning. I'll never forget when I told him I had learned it, and then played it for him. He started crying and said it was his favorite and he felt like he was Mr. Bojangles. When I saw how happy it made him, that was it. I was hooked on playing music.

Very Narative | Reviewer: Ron | 11/18/07

This is a very ballad like song. There is a lot of repetition and does have a tragic parts, two very important things in a ballad.

Very moving | Reviewer: Gabriel Even | 10/2/07

This song really moves me and specially sung by Bob Dylan.
I have listned to a lot of performers singing Mr. Bojangles,
Bob Dylan as to my ears ant taste is the best.
