Journey MOTHER, FATHER Lyrics

Last updated: 06/20/2012 11:00:00 AM

She sits alone, an empty stare
A mother's face she wears
Where did she go wrong,
the fight is gone
Lord help this broken home

Hey, mother, father, sister
Hey, come back, tryin', believein'
Hey, mother, father, dreamer

Don't you know that I'm alive for you
I'm your seventh son
And when lightning strikes the family
Have faith, believe.

With dreams he tried, but lost his pride
He drinks his life away
One photograph, in broken glass
It should not end this way.

Through bitter tears
And wounded years, those ties
of blood were strong
So much to say, those yesterdays
So now don't you turn away.

Inventor of this Vocal Style | Reviewer: spankysrevenge | 6/20/12

How can you listen to this song and not realize that any other performer than the original is just karaoke. Perry was a master and invented this style of singing by blending his own R adn B influences. He really worked his voice to death, and is one of the finest unique greats the world has ever known. It is so truly stylistic and unique to Perry and nobody else. Any male with a decent voice that tries Perry's vocals knows exactly what I am talking about. Stamina and acrobatics merged- not easy. Thanks for sharing your gift Steve.

High Notes | Reviewer: Tim | 10/24/11

My favorite part is at the end when Steve Perry hits the really high notes when he sings "oooh oh oh oh oh oh oooooooh!" Simply beautiful. Steve is one of few men who can sing that high and not look or sound gay. Rock on man!!!!!

Amazing! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/10/11

I love this song! I was actually at a Journey Concert in Las Vegas back in 2008. When this song came on, I thought it was pretty could. But when they got to the chorus...whoa! I also got goosebumps from it! I think that this song deserves a place on Journey's Greatest hits album! I am going to see Journey again Febuary 23rd! Can't wait and I know that this is going to be a song that I can't wait to come on! GO JOURNEY!

Just turned 15 and got both Journey Essentials CDs...I was listening to them and they all sounded really good, then this one came on and I was this is really cool.

Steve Perry does an amazing job on this song, (Or did) I love when Steve sings; legend of the 70-80s rock! Stay true, Journey!

great! | Reviewer: LR | 7/21/10

I know 21 Journey songs all of by heart (and I'm only 15!), and I have to say that this one is my absolute favourite. I only like it when Steve Perry sings it. Don't get me wrong, Deen is good, but can't compare to SP.

Gives me goosebumps everytime I hear Steve sing this. :)

30 Years On | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/4/10

Perhaps the finest Journey song ever. A real, emotional button-pusher for anyone who's ever had family issues, which is of course all of us so everyone can relate. But just as important is the almost symphonic quality of the music. The powerful message and melody combined makes this a modern masterpiece.

Originally sung and co-written by Perry in 1981, it is a Journey concert staple to this day and Deen Castronovo's signature song in 2010 and beyond. And THAT is the ultimate tribute to great songwriting: longevity! "Mother, Father" is as lyrically touching and musically stunning as it was nearly 3 decades ago.

wow. omg. im only 14 and i LOVE Journey! iv just heard their songs a couple monthes ago, and fell in love with most of them. I can play "Open Arms" and "Don't Stop Believin'" on the piano, too. This song is amazing, especially at the end where syeve hits those amzing high notes. my favourite Journey song is still "Separate Ways!"

Deen Castronovo Rocks! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/3/09

When I heard about the new lead singer I went on YouTube to check it out and while I found him to have an amaziing tenor voice, it's Deen Castronovo's voice that won me over. Wow! this guy is so talented, playing the drums while singing this song (and others) is incredible! I am a rejuvenated fan because of Deen! Love how he nails this song!

Journey realated? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/13/08

The movie Journey from Hallmark is from 1996. The kid in the movie was named Journey and he wore the same converse sneakers that Journeys original drummer wore YEARS ago. The lyrics say I'm your sevenths son. Journey was the only son in his family in the movie? What does sevenths mean other than a musical scale?

Amazing and brilliant! | Reviewer: AJ | 9/18/08

I am a big time Journey fan from the late 70's to current! In my opinion "Escape" was THE best!! I never got to see Steve Perry unfortunately but absolutely loved his vocals! Leery of any other vocalist throughout the years, I never wanted to go to any of their concerts until I heard the story with new singer - Arnel Pineda. What a story! We just saw them this week in KC at the Midland Theatre and WOW! I admit I arrived very skeptical and left feeling they exceeded my expectations by far! He was very energetic and vocals seemed much stronger now as time has passed since they released their new cd/dvd set during the Spring 2008. I never realized until I watched their dvd that the lead singer did not sing "Mother, Father" instead it was drummer from 2001 to current - Deen Castronovo. Very well done Deen!! Wow, wow, wow! That has always been one of my favorite songs and I was absolutely thrown back. Very hard to play drums and sing and he pulls it off with ease. Love the intensity of the vocals matching meaning behind lyrics. Reminds me of my parents after their divorce, so it's more than just a song, it's deep. Thanks so much to all of you for keeping Journey alive and real, staying true to fans!!!

uplifting, excellent, perfect | Reviewer: Gail | 8/24/08

This song is going to win something. The haromonics in it is SURPERB!!! It absolutlely FANTASTIC, the viels of the listener fall away and the Songs Chord Shifts and Lyrics get to the Soul of the Listener. A Winner!!! I love ARNEAL AS WELL...SUCH HEART...AND SOUL...PERFECT

Wow | Reviewer: Richard | 6/9/07

I'd heard most of the popular journey songs before but not "Mother Father", I'm more of a fan of Metal music. I went to see a Dream Theater concert in San Francisco, CA in 2004 and low and behold, they covered Journey's "Mother, Father" and it sounded FANTASTIC. Other audience members informed me it was a Journey song so I went out and found the original. Now it's my alltime favorite Journey track, even beating out "Don't Stop Believin." Everything about "Mother Father" is uplifting. The lyrics, the soaring chorus, the guitar work, the keys, just uplifting.

Hitting Home | Reviewer: Jeri | 3/31/06

This song, that I discovered after purchasing the new Escape-DVD/CD Live from Houston-says so much about my family right now. I'm the mother of 3 and I constantly wonder "Where did I(she) go wrong?!" After being a fan of Journey since the '80's, they are still giving me "new" music and inspiration. Thanks to the fantastic group for all the music-it really is the soundtrack of my life-from the beginning when I was a young, carefree teenager to now-the band just keeps being relevant. Timeless-that says it all. Thanks, guys.
