Let Down Lyrics - Radiohead

Review The Song (40)

Transport, motorways and tramlines
Starting and then stopping
Taking off and landing
The emptiest of feelings
Disappointed people clinging on to bottles
And when it comes it's so so disappointing

Let down and hanging around
Crushed like a bug in the ground
Let down and hanging around

Shell smashed, juices flowing
Wings twitch, legs are going
Don't get sentimental
It always ends up drivel

One day I'm going to grow wings
A chemical reaction
Hysterical and useless
sponsored links
Hysterical and ...

Let down and hanging around
Crushed like a bug in the ground
Let down and hanging around

Let down again
Let down again
Let down again

You know, you know where you are with
You know where you are with
Floor collapsing
Floating, bouncing back
And one day....
I am going to grow wings
A chemical reaction
Hysterical and useless
Hysterical and...

Let down and hanging around
Crushed like a bug in the ground
Let down and hanging around

What this song is about | Reviewer: Bob | 7/19/11

This song is about what happens when you get what you want. Thom yorke has said so in numerous interviews. Most people think that if only they get the one thing they have always wanted, they will be happy. For Thom Yorke, this was to be a rock star with a successful band. Unfortunately, he has learnt that reality is different to what we imagine, and that in the end when you get what you want, you are left feeling "Let Down". Having attained the unatainable dream, you realise that there is no ultimate happiness in this life. For Thom, the rock star life involves endless airports, travel, etc. In the end he recognises, we are all destined to be let down by life, and we cling onto bottles - our dreams and fantasies - to avoid facing the realities of life.

i simply think this song is depicting the story of the suffering we are born into. Cyclic and disappointing, we seek escape and refuge by 'clinging on to bottles.' I really feel like this song was written for me.

Alcohol Addict | Reviewer: SongLover | 12/5/10

To me this song is about people who have been Let Down and they consume a lot of alcohol. Hence the line "disappointed people clinging onto bottles".

Alcoholics are often let down and hanging around saying things you don't comprehend, and often there is a lot of pain they have went through that no one else can understand. You just dismiss them and walk over them like you would a smashed bug.

He compares these people to a smashed bug. A smashed bug is pathetic and hopeless. The day they "grow wings" is the day they can beat their addiction and pain and not take a drink. No longer being "hysterical and useless".

When he sings the verses it's like he's explaining the state of these people (before they drink) and when it gets to "A Chemical Reaction" they've taken another drink. Leaving them hysterical and useless all over again. It's brilliant how he has the back and forth of an addiction in this song. Even though it states "One day I'm gonna grow wings" they still take another drink like I'll stop drinking tomorrow.

He sings this song not with disdain, but with pity. It's beautiful. I'm a dancer and I plan to choreograph to the Vitamin String Quartet version of this song.

Doesn't seem that complicated | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/16/10

"Hey guys, I'm sorry to tell this but actually, this song is about an insect being smashed."

Nope - that's why he says "crushed like a bug." It's a simile. It's about how being let down (probably by a woman) makes him feel like a bug that's been crushed. He's hoping someday to mature and be able to transcend this kind of thing (because it keeps happening), much like a bug evolving wings so it can fly over danger.

He uses the bug metaphor because songs about these feelings are clich├ęd. Rather than write another emo song about getting shot down by a girl, Yorke compares himself to a bug to convey the powerlessness he feels at the hands of others in this situation. In doing so, he also broadens the scope of the "let down" to apply to everybody he sees that he thinks seem to share his feelings.

The truth | Reviewer: Radiohead99 | 4/6/10

As touching as all your interpretations are, Thom Yorke does not write optimistic songs about "inner beauty". Each one of his songs are dark, somber observations about humanity and people in general. these are not happy lyrics.

Bad news | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/8/10

Hey guys, I'm sorry to tell this but actually, this song is about an insect being smashed. Not so deep, isn't it? But well, I personally find the comparison between the insect and the human brilliant and astonishing. I love radiohead in every way.

Radiohed connects to that sad part in us as humans, but in a beautiful way.
However we hurt, how ever we feel the pain, thom sings to us about it, and somehow connects to our pain.
He sings about his own pains and intertwines them beautifully with hope life can have after all the let downs.

Let down | Reviewer: HelloJello | 1/21/10

This song is about someone who's been let down and he/she is just hanging around clinging onto a bottle and stuff.
But he/she keeps telling himself/herself not to get sentimental because it always ends up going nowhere and assures himself/herself that one day he/she is going to grow wings and fly away from all these bad thing that happened.

Just as the lyrics suggest :u

Pure beauty | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/11/09

It may be sad, but the song is really about the inner beauty of people, and the hope that we all hold onto that cannot be crushed. This feeling is manifested in its sound, which is absolutely stunning, leaving me breathless every time. Hyperbole? I think not. There are few songs that can do what this one does. I can really only think of one: Pink Floyd's "Great Gig in the Sky."
