Lass of the Low Country Lyrics - Nina Simone

Review The Song (3)

Oh, he was a lord of high degree
And she was a lass from the low countree
But she loved his lordship so tenderly.
Oh sorrow, sing sorrow
Now she sleeps in the valley where the wild flowers nod
And no one knows she loved him but herself and God

One morn when the sun was on the mead
He passed by her door on a milk white steed
She smiled and she spoke, but he paid no heed
Oh sorrow, sing sorrow
Now she sleeps in the valley where the wild flowers nod
And no one knows she loved him but herself and God

If you be a lass from the low countree
Don't love of no lord of high degree
They haint got a heart for sympathy
Oh sorrow, sing sorrow
Now she sleeps in the valley where the wild flowers nod
And no one knows she loved him but herself and God

Odetta's version of these lyrics | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/19/12

Odetta says in her notes for Gate of Horn she had thought this Scottish originally but the version she renders with exquisite sensitive beauty (which has these lyrics) is from John Jacob Niles. It is so affecting I don't want to hear Simone's....

I sang this song for choir and I loved it. The third verse was diffrent, but it was like this:

The maid kept her love hidden deep inside,
And 'ner told a soul 'til the day she dies.
The Lord lived a lone 'ner to find a bride.
Oh sorrow, sing sorrow!
Now she sleeps in the valley where the wild flowers nod.
And no one knows she loved him but herself and god.

It really is a beautiful song. Makes me all teary-eyed just remembering it.

This is a beautiful old country song. Anyone who enjoys celtic, or old english folk will enjoy this enchanting song.
