It was buried deep on my music hard drive! This song was amazingly bittersweet as Joe sang it at the end of Let's Rock Again, a documentary made shortly before his death..check it out! Wonderful. Joe did not write this song for the show and kept his religious views fairly private. It was chosen as a theme for the show for whatever reason, independently of Joe's intentions. Not that there is anything wrong with that, just don't try and read too much into the lyrics based on the show. Most successful songs by the Clash were a result of a collaboration between Mick Jones (music) and Joe Strummer (lyrics). To give Joe Strummer credit as the driving force behind the band is a disservice to the other members. This is shown to be true by the fact that it took years before Joe Strummer could find musical success with another group (The Mesacleros). To me Johnny Appleseed, like many of Joe's songs, is a song lamenting and celebrating globalization. Global-a-Go Go . If you like this song check out Streetcore - fantastic album! "participate with your family in life" one of the clues about john's purpose is in john's last name "monad", looking up monad we find: "What is a monad? My Interpretation | Reviewer: Russ | 8/28/07 Here's my take on the show John From Cincinnati and the song Johnny Appleseed. I see the title "John From Cincinnati" and the resulting acronym (JFC), or vice versa, as suggesting Jesus Christ. Or as he is affectionately known "Jesus F'n Christ". JFC. Who knows how he would behave if he was here as an individual in this day and age. Why not a semi-retarded guy with special abilities. The many references to "His Father" and "His Father's Words" and his very personalized way of relating to each of the characters are reminiscent of the way Christ related in the scriptures. His overall purpose was obviously to reunite a highly dysfunctional family ravaged by many of the evils this world has to offer. Very Christ-like. I found the characters engrossing and immensely entertaining. I could point out other similarities that have convinced me of the Christ analogy, but I won't. As for the song, it's running through my head all the time now. Very catchy, great beat, interesting lyrics. Sorry to hear the singer (Joe Strummer) had passed away from a congenital heart defect a few years back. Great song. As for the words, well the references to Martin Luther King (amongst other things, he was a Christian mimister), the "He might pass by in the hour of need" line, and "there's a lot of souls", and "angels" don't necessarily denote Chritian references, but they could. The bees being the soldiers in Iraq. Dumb Dumb Gerorge and his mindless killings. Good song though. If nothing else it makes you think! Johnny Appleseed from John from Cincinnati | Reviewer: Julia | 8/17/07 I, too, had never heard this song until this HBO series and I had to look it up, which connected me to Joe Strummer, of whom I read about earlier this year when I read a review of the Sundance documentary, "The Future is Unwritten" and how Joe left this earth too soon. As far as the connection to the series, one thing could be the line, "let the summertime sun fall on the apple" - which I took to refer to the old saying, "the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree," referring to Butchie and Shawn and Mitch (the father/grandfather). The other connection I saw was the search for the soul - after all, I think that John from Cincinnat was sent to help the family find its "soul," since they had drifted apart so far from each other and from the whole sense of family. But, I don't necessarily see a link to Christ or God, since we don't know exactly what John is talking about when he mentions his "father." It could be a reference to many things, but I can see how someone would interpret the religious aspect to it. So, at any rate, I love both the show and the theme song, and am grateful that I have been turned onto some new music and will definitely watch that documentary about Joe Strummer. Peace!
