Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam. 'Cause sunbeams are not made like me.
Don't expect me to cry for all the reasons you had to die. Don't ever ask your
love of me.
Don't expect me to cry.
Don't expect me to lie.
Don't expect me to die for thee.
Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam. 'Cause sunbeams are not made like me.

Don't expect me to cry.

Review about Jesus Doesn't want Me for a Sunbeam lyrics and stupidity | Reviewer: paolo | 10/18/09
Well, actually the way Kurt sings this is without "'cause", although the Vaseline's lyrics are correct.
It's unbelievable how much stupid people make stupid points. Don't you realize this is just a song, and to my ears a beatiful one?
Yeah, sure Kurt found something in it that meant more to him, and maybe some of the listeners will find that same thing in it, or maybe not.
So what? Can't you just live with your beliefs and let other people live with theirs? Is your faith so weak, that you can't bear to listen to something else? Come on! It's ridiculous.
"I'll throw my Nirvana LP's without remorse". Why on earth did you buy them in the first place?
Ah, stupidity... and closed minds. Art, music, poetry, religion, if they have different names there must be a reason!
Yeah, reason - something you make little use of.
Now please let me spend a few words for the religious minds. God is there whether or not you care about it (yes, stop thinking of God as a person please), whether or not you sing about it, whether or not you pray, whether or not you believe. If it doesn't care, why do you? Let people have their own spirituality, and mind about yours! You need it!

Do not confuse our perspective with Cobain perspective, the real meaning just he know it remains a work of art as each sees its own reflection point of view and not kurt view. However my perspective (I am not saying that is the reality) is that the message is clear, he lives in the indifference of their fellow, Christian and expectativy so do not expect to see crying, dying or lying for thee. How he gonna expect to be loved for someone (jesus) that insite the love and sacrifice?.
I say what I think it is and what I think is just an interpretation that does not require knowing a little explored but did not urge kurt mix my feelings with him. what I think about the letter is very aside what that can mean.

im not saying taht he meant it like this, bu you could also read it different: liike jesus being a representitive of GOD, GOD made him this way, (not being a sunbeam, a giving and loving unit) and he's not singing to jesus but to woman. for me that's explains the cry, lie and die in a total new concept.
and maybe he meant both, he didnt write it anyway. Im no cristian, I never was, but I have started believing in God. For me the bible is useless when it gets literally interprented, just like this song. Even if Kurt Cobain doenst respect God, nor jesus. (what he probably does:P) does it really matter for you? Isnt it his pain? And is time to talk him outof this pain already oveR? why bother?!
happy lives all:)

Don't slate people who have religion, don't slate those who don't. Show some respect for each other and realise everyone is entitled to their own belief. You can't call the bible 'fake' stories because Jesus did actually exist and even if those events didn't occur the stories can act like fables. You can't prove whether it happened or not. And just remember, it is only a song.

It doesnt matter why kurt cobain played this song or what it means to him or the Vasselines. If it means something to you or is relevant to your life.
Personally As a christian, i cant relate to this song or find any meaning it. Therefore it stays on the cd and not on my ipod. However i dont feel i have to brand nirvana as evil and go burn all their records.
Also kurt was not God. This is a pretty embaressing and childish statement. Even if i wasnt a christian i would find that insulting and having been depressed etc myself, i think kurt would be repulsed.
Sweet anyway im off to do press ups eat steak and tune my guitar to drop D. EVERLONG
my god is kurt cobain, Nirvanas my drug, and Grunge is my religion. Ok 1st everything in the bible is fake. Religion is just there 4 ppl 2 have an answer to things they dont believe. i use 2 believe in god and religion but now i just find it hard 2 believe. John is stupid 4 throwing away his Nirvana cds just because it talks about his precious imaginary god
You People Are Missing the Meaning Entirely | Reviewer: Sean | 3/30/09
The song IS anti-religious. Read the lyrics and moreso, listen to how Kurt sings the lyrics. It's sort of an anti-religious version of the old Christian song named "I'll be a sunbeam" in which one of the chorus lines says "Jesus wants me for a sunbeam". Obviously Kurt didn't write the song, but the fact that this is the first cover he chose to play on this record should tell you something about the statement he was making. The song implies that if there is a God then He doesn't want the singer to be happy because he feels nothing like a sunbeam. The singer is the opposite of a sunbeam, and implies intense depression and hatred for the world in general. We all know Kurt was very troubled so these lyrics probably really spoke to him. The chorus of the song also implies that the singer is speaking to God or anyone who might believe in God saying "don't expect me to sacrifice anything in Jesus' name". It implies that he thinks Christianity is BS and that there may not be a God at all.
At least thats how I read it.
jesus dont want you for a preacher | Reviewer: holten | 3/25/09
look. kurt isnt some mormon, hes not a priest hes a starting point of a grunge culuter. so leave your christian morals at bible camp. Kurt is God, God is dead. Nirvana never said they were a christian band so see them for what theyu are. His message may even be against jesus who cares. Dont listen to them. He preaches Anarchy, Change, Freedom of Speach, and Utopia. Not some bible bull. So keep you ears open sheep. Peace Love Empathy.
