Ice Queen Lyrics - Within Temptation

Review The Song (41)

When leaves have fallen
And skies turned into grey.
The night keeps on closing in on the day
A nightingale sings his song of farewell
You better hide for her freezing hell

On cold wings she's coming
You better keep moving
For warmth, you'll be longing
Come on just feel it
Don't you see it?
You better believe it.

When she embraces
Your heart turns to stone
She comes at night when you are all alone
And when she whispers
Your blood shall run cold
sponsored links
You better hide before she finds you

Whenever she is raging
She takes all life away
Haven't you seen?
Haven't you seen?
The ruins of our world

She covers the earth with a breathtaking cloak
The sun awakes and melts it away
The world now opens its eyes and sees
The dawning of a new day

On cold wings she's coming
You better keep moving
For warmth, you'll be longing
Come on just feel it
Don't you see it?
You better believe it.

Whenever she is raging
She takes all life away
Haven't you seen?
Haven't you seen?
The ruins of our world

Maybe it's just the Dresden Files nerd in me, but this really makes me think of Mab.

Who, in that series, in the fairy queen of Winter. Song seems to describe her pretty damn well. xD

when i hear this song i think of a woman, not mythical or anything, just one that does not love you but uses you "comes to you in the night" "whenever shes rages she takes all life away" idk just my interpretation. good song though

Its all in there | Reviewer: hayor | 5/24/12

The song to me denotes 'death', which sharon refers to as she. from the beginning to the end, negatives, fears and death is what the song epitomizes. but then a gain we get different messages from songs.

Mental Anguish | Reviewer: Anechka | 2/20/12

This is a PERSONAL interpretation, so please don't jump down my throat for it. But...every time I listen to it, I feel like it's mental anguish in all it's many forms. She comes most often when you're alone, and she takes away EVERYTHING you ever had. And sometimes, she takes lives. Those around the people she's contacted, those of the people she comes for. There's nothing but cold darkness when she comes, and all the voices scream louder and louder that she's right; you're nothing, you're useless, you're worthless, you're only good for sex, you're just trash, you'll never be anything, you're a waste of life, you should have been spat into a condom instead of your mother's womb, etc etc etc. But if you stay awake, if you keep busy, preoccupied, she'll have to fight harder to get to you. But after each episode, whether it be schizophrenia, depression, PTSD, what have you, everything seems so much better, and it'll stay better, until the cycle starts again, with another "night".

I think this is about another world, where every night an evil woman comes and freezes the world, and if anyone is outside when she comes, they'll be frozen to death. The Ice Queen is defeated every morning by the rising sun, but the people she killed can't be saved.

ice queen | Reviewer: Sean | 9/1/11

It seems very obvious to me that the song it's self is about winter and the "ice queen" is infact the winter setting in and taking hold. Nevertheless I always picture some kind of evil female mage whom rains destruction down on homes and villages and this is a song to warn people of her coming. Which I think is the point of the simile.

Hauntingly Beautiful | Reviewer: Ice_Queen | 7/12/11

I don't think anybody is necessarily right or wrong. It just depends how we choose to perceive the song. Like many of you, I too view it as relating to connotations of evil and magic, and mythical women such as The Snow Queen and suchlike.

Oveall this is one of my favourite WT songs (topped only by Memories) as it's so hauntingly beautiful.

I can't help it but the song reminds me of a movie I once saw when I was little. Something about an ice queen and a mirror. Her mirror falls in pieces and this kid gets a piece of mirrorglass in his hart and he becomes evil. "Your heart turns to stone"

Lol | Reviewer: Eve | 5/4/10

Oh my God people. This song isn't talking about some mythical queen, it's talking about WINTER. maybe that could explain why the album's name is called Mother Nature. Winter does take life in areas that can be below freezing and have horrible blizzards. Ahem new jersey! The skies do turn grey, you do have to hide from the freezing hell, the leaves are gone and all that other stuff. And daylight savings time 'the night closes in on the day'...you people have some imagination o_o which isn't a bad thing or anything but uhm wow.

Ice Queen | Reviewer: Jag | 11/29/09

When i first heared the song I fought of the Narnia movie. I thought of the witch in her castle of ice. And then i imagined Sharon Den Adel with big wings, flying to stop a war in her world.

But when I thought more obout it i started thinking of a queen who's world is destroyed of war and just tries to stop an other one by killing "the bad ones", but at the same time becomes bad herself. At least she doesn't looks to nice in the video.

And if you listen to the lyrics carefuly you will hear that it sais;
"Whenever she hears raging
She takes a life away
Haven't you seen
Haven't you seen
The ruins of OUR world"
It's hears and A life, just listen. ^^

lyrics correction | Reviewer: Mat | 8/14/09

I 'd like to correct some mistakes in this version of the lyrics.

1. The songs says "Whenever she IS raging", not Whenever she HEARS raging.
2. The song says "Haven't you seen the ruin of OUR world", not Haven't you seen the ruins of HER world"

Just a couple corrections...Other than that it's a great song...one of many great songs by Within Temptation.

All that meets the eye | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/19/09

I personally think that the charater of the 'Ice Queen' has good intensions, but hasnt found the way to express them in a more positive light. She dosent like war, and in the lyrics,
"Whenever she hears raging she takes a life away havent you seen havent you seen the ruins of her world"
She has had her own world destroyed by war, and seeks to end it. She kills those who start them, but in the process takes life as well.
All of Within Temtation's songs have had a personal meaning to me, and this one is no diffrent, if not more so.

ICE QUEEN | Reviewer: Julius | 7/4/09

so... whatever the enviroment between the lyric, the music and the video makes me feel some nostagic feeling.... the effect of the video; the representation of the differents stages of the nature like the fire, and other natural forces reinforces the relation of the ICE QUEEN with the winter... also is pretty emotonal compare the winter with some mental stage like winter depression or whatever.... so this is a pretty good song and really really emotional with a relative but unified meaning

Flawless Ice | Reviewer: The Poet | 6/18/09

I think this song is flawless. Ice Queen is truly magnificent and almost foreshadowing. It's chilling and mysterious, a difficult combination to create in a song. When I look for the meaning of a song, I am not looking for the literal or obvious meaning. I prefer to search deeper.

When I heard this song, I thought of a spirit who has for so long lived in the coldest, darkest ice. Her castle is just an icey ruin of olden times. A broken, lost memory killed by war.
"When she hears raging, she takes life away," She destroys the fighting because of the pain it causes her. Since I feel our world has become so chaotic, the Ice Queen returns to destroy the very reason for it. Then sun/peace comes and melts her stone heart away. She slips back into the ice and waits, for an eternity if she has to, she waits to ruin the world with the cold. Eternal winter and night...

A Title For My Review? :) | Reviewer: Hula | 5/21/09

I love this song. In my opinion I think it's talking about all those disasters that have to do with winter, like avalanches and stuff. Like for example:

"On cold wings she's coming
You better keep moving
For warmth, you'll be longing
Any day."

I think this means the 'ice queen' creates winter 'you' want Spring to come.

So I think the 'ice queen' is basicly winter itself. One last thing:

"Whenever she is raging
She takes all life away
Haven't you seen?
Haven't you seen?
The ruins of our world?"

This I believe means when people die during winter or very cold places. It is extremely sad when someone dies in an avalanche or freezes to death. Well, that's my opinion. Bye ~Hula
