I Fought the Law (and I Won) Lyrics
Performed by Dead KennedysReview The Song (3)
Drinkin' beer in the hot sun
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won
I needed sex and I got mine
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won
The law don't mean shit if you've got the right friends
That's how the country's run
Twinkies are the best friend I've ever had
I fought the law And I won
I fought the law and I won
I blew George & Harvey's brains out with my six-gun
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won
Gonna write my book and make a million
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won
I'm the new folk hero of the Ku Klux Klan
My cop friends think that's fine
You can get away with murder if you've got a badge
I fought the law And I won
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won
I am the law
So I won, ungh!

hilarious yet still serious | Reviewer: ben starr | 4/9/10
A great reworking by a band that always delivers the agitprop goods. It's incredibly funny yet it makes it's point loud and clear. The assasination of Mayor Moscone and the great Harvey Milk was absolutely tragic, eclipsed in tragedy by what might as well have been an acquittal of guilt for Dan White. This song finds a way to not only capture that injustice but get a laugh from it, which is a good thing.
Refers to Dan White | Reviewer: Evan | 12/28/08
"George and Harvey" are the mayor of San Francisco and Harvey Milk, the first openly-gay man elected to major public office in America. Dan White assasinated both of them. He was charged with a lesser crime of man slaughter because his defense had said his mental state was impaired due to eating junk food, which was called "The Twinkie Defense."
Written from the Perspective of a Ex Police Officer Who Got off Easy for a double assassination | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/15/08
The assassinations and their aftermath are chronicled in a reworking of I Fought the Law written from White's perspective by the punk band the Dead Kennedys, released on the compilation album Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death (1987).
