I Don't Even Know Myself Lyrics - The Who

Review The Song (6)

There's nothing in the way I walk that could tell you where I'm going,
There's nothing in the words I speak that can betray anything I'm knowing,
Don't think about the way I dress, you can fit me on a labelled shelf,
Don't pretend that you know me 'cause I don't even know myself,
Ooh I don't know myself.

I don't mind if you try once in a while,
I don't mind if I cry once in a while,
The doors aren't shut as tight as they might seem,
I'm just trying to fight my way out of this dream.

Don't listen to the words I say, weighing up if I'm enlightened,
Don't shiver as you pass me by, 'cause mister I'm the one who's frightened,
The police just came and left, they wanted me and no one else,
Don't pretend that you know me 'cause I don't even know myself,
I said I don't know myself.

I don't mind if you try once in a while,
I don't mind if I cry once in a while,

The doors aren't shut as tight as they might seem,
I'm just trying to fight my way out of this dream.

Do you remember me, I don't remember you,
Do you still love me, you know I think you do,
I have been gone, and some prison warden knows my scream,
I'm just trying to fight my way out of this dream.

There's only five who know my real name,
And my mother don't believe they know it,
What she called me is the way I'm staying,
And no one'll ever know it,
Come on all of you big boys, come on all of you elves,
Don't pretend that you know me 'cause I don't even know myself,
I said I don't know myself.

I don't mind if you try once in a while,
And I don't mind if I cry once in a while.

sublime | Reviewer: Publius | 4/19/14

Some great thoughts expressed above in the comments. This is a beautiful song and Pete is a great writer. Anything I could say about The Who and this song would be superfluous besides the fact that this song is sublime.

late response to F...and more | Reviewer: tom | 9/3/11

I agree whole heartedly. But specifically, the thought that this song gives to me is that if you interviewed everyone you've ever met you're entire life (including family) and asked them to tell you everything they know about you: First impressions, last impressions, second hand impressions, third hand, no hands, conversations, muddy memories - then put them all together, then the picture you would get would be woefully inaccurate from your point of view. Or as someone who is very dear to me once said, "What you see as me, I don't recognize." Given this state of affairs, there's no room for hatred......Open mind, indeed.

5 star | Reviewer: todd | 7/10/08

this song is brilliant & I can't believe that they took it off the original Who's Next album but its good to see it on the bonus tracks on the cd. One of my favourite tunes from the Who. I think it is better than some of the songs that were on Who's Next originally but thats just my opinion. 5 out of 5 stars I give it

No coincidence I don't think | Reviewer: F | 11/12/07

These lyrics have facinated me before and so now I'm just voicing something I think is worth mentioning. Many will not agree I'm sure. The underlying theme of this song parallels a critical turning point on a spiritual path. I don't know if that was the intent of the lyricist. My path instructs me about how one (and all) must hit a point where something like what is expressed in these lyrics, must be faced individually and by all individuals. My spiritual paths is telling me the same as is contained in this song. Don't pretend that you know me 'cause I don't even know myself. Not many are drawn to that fearful statement. Yet it promises to release from fear. It is the essence of an open mind; a non-judgmental mind; ultimately a peaceful mind.

I first heard this song on the Live At The Isle of Wight performance DVD. Absolutely cracking track. I think it especially brilliant when you actually FIND OUT what the lyrics are - not just singing what you THINK is right. Roger's voice is still brilliant and Pete has a truly fantastic songwriting ability - and man can he give that SG some stick. Long Live Rock.

to my parents | Reviewer: Kyle Hardstaff | 8/16/07

I have said this to my parents many times. I've been listening to the album Who's Next longer than I can remember, but not the extended version which contains this song, so when I found it I was pretty happy that Pete (I think he wrote this one..) had been through the same shit as me.
This song just rocks, though, the little refrain is amazing too, and the transitions. And the elves. Don't forget the elves. =D
