I'm On Fire Lyrics - Bruce Springsteen

Review The Song (4)

Hey little girl is your daddy home
Did he go and leave you all alone
I got a bad desire
Ooh ooh ooh
I'm on fire

Tell me now baby is he good to you
Can he do to you the things that I do
Oh no
I can take you higher
Ooh ooh ooh
I'm on fire

Sometimes it's like someone took a knife
baby edgy and dull and cut a six-inch valley
through the middle of my soul

At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet
and a freight train running through the
sponsored links
middle of my head
Only you, can cool my desire
Ooh ooh ooh
I'm on fire

Ooh ooh ooh
I'm on fire

Ooh ooh ooh
I'm on fire

The first time I heard it, it reminded me of the Joyce Carol Oates story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" which is about a creeper trying to seduce a young girl. But it also sounds like a love song. It makes me wanna ask Bruce, what he meant, honestly.

I think it's about a girl he was once with(I'm assuming that). The line "Can he do to you the things that I do, un huh", instead of "can do" makes me believe he was once with this girl along time ago. He still has feelings for her and they've went their separate ways. Maybe he didn't want to settle down at the time and she did. He still has feelings for her. Nothing more can come out of it, besides a one night stand.

Yeah some people got all nuts about the first few lyrics. It doesn't mean 'literally daddy, as in your dad', it's a slang for husband. Or that she's an actual little girl. When he says little girl, I guess this guy literally controls her and she's not happy.

Some people believe it means different. That's my opinion of what it means. Great song, deep. He's a great poet.

If you interpret them literally it does sound a little creepy. But then if you put them into another context it takes on a different meaning. As to which was intended we shall hope it was the later.

In the second verse, second stanza, should the word "I" be put between the words "that" and "do" respectively?

Also, can you please tell me what the song is about? To me it sounds very "dark" and a little disturbing. However, I could be interpreting it totally wrong. Please advise. Thank you. :-)
