High Flying Bird Lyrics - Elton John

Review The Song (6)

Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin

You wore a little cross of gold around your neck
I saw it as you flew between my reason
Like a raven in the night time when you left
I wear a chain upon my wrist that bears no name
You touched it and you wore it
And you kept it in your pillow all the same

My high-flying bird has flown from out my arms
I thought myself her keeper
She thought I meant her harm
She thought I was the archer
A weather man of words
But I could never shoot down
My high-flying bird

The white walls of your dressing room are stained in scarlet red

You bled upon the cold stone like a young man
In the foreign field of death
Wouldn't it be wonderful is all I heard you say
You never closed your eyes at night and learned to love daylight
Instead you moved away

My high-flying bird has flown from out my arms
I thought myself her keeper
She thought I meant her harm
She thought I was the archer
A weather man of words
But I could never shoot down

My high-flying bird has flown from out my arms
I thought myself her keeper
She thought I meant her harm
She thought I was the archer
A weather man of words
But I could never shoot down
My high-flying bird

My high-flying, high-flying bird
My high-flying, high-flying bird
My high-flying, high-flying bird

I was just a kid of 12 when this came out and just really herd it now...This is the Elton John that I love! I have just played this song 8 times in a row, crazy, miss those days, I'd say one of his best!

This song is so true... | Reviewer: Laura | 11/14/11

I am 51 now- and If you give up your dreams for someone else- you, too, will be lamenting wishing you had followed your dreams. I do not even remember any of mine- I was too busy with 3 kids at 20 and I guess I just lost myself in everyone elses dreams and lives...
Do not let this happen to you...Please dream your own dream and try with all your might to reach for it...or someday- you will have no choice- to just accept things as they are-

I first heard this song in the early 70's as a kid of maybe 12 or so.It was my best friends favorite song and elton was new then.I bought the album years later as a grown man and played this track over and over to learn the lyrics and try to discover what elton was singing about.

Elton at his best | Reviewer: Toni | 6/17/07

I love this song and remember it from when I was a kid. This is when he was at his best in my opinion. The harmonies are great, everything falls in the right place. I found it as an extra track on my "Don't Shoot Me..." cd.

After hearing this song, I'm off to buy it!! | Reviewer: Cindi Janclaes | 4/8/07

I watched the Madison Square Garden concert clips, fell in love with this song, 'High Flying Bird', went through all of my albums and CD's, discovered I didn't have this one, and am desperate that I won't be able to find it. I will really try because this is a beautiful song. We love it, thank you!!
